Chapter 69 - 70: Hand Over the Child
Chapter 69: Chapter 70: Hand Over the Child
“I can also seek an official title for the child, don’t you want him to rise rapidly? Acknowledging his ancestry has only benefits, no drawbacks for her.” Old Madam Chu said persuasively, not believing that anyone could be indifferent to benefits and power.
Shao He merely smiled faintly at the conditions she proposed, took a step forward, and spoke near Old Madam’s ear with a mocking tone, “Actually, I might consider bringing the child back, but…”
“But what?” Old Madam Chu asked somewhat agitated. It didn’t matter whether Shao He returned or not, as long as she could bring the child back, she was willing to agree to any condition.
The corners of Shao He’s mouth slightly rose as she slowly said, “Unless Chu Yu is dead, I will bring the child back to the Marquis’s Mansion.”
The smile at the corners of Old Madam Chu’s mouth instantly fell, she was so furious that her chest heaved drastically, pointing at Shao He she said, “You, you…”
“Old Madam, don’t be hasty. I do this for your great-grandson’s sake. Otherwise, if my child and I return to the Marquis’s Mansion now, I fear your beloved grandson will not let us off!”
...
After Shao He finished speaking, she left the furious Old Madam, turned around, went back to the courtyard, and shut the gate.
A slam made Old Madam Chu come back to her senses, her eyes fixed on the door.
“Old Madam, perhaps we should leave for now,” the nanny whispered beside her.
Angry, Old Madam Chu flicked her sleeve and, with the help of the nanny, boarded the carriage.
Shao He, hearing the sound of the carriage departing, then walked straight toward the small courtyard.
Xiao Linzhang was on the bed cooing and flailing his arms. Qingxia and Qing Shan were teasing him.
“Miss.” On seeing the returning figure, the two quickly bowed.
“Mm.”
Shao He nodded slightly and, while walking towards the bed, instructed them, “Our residence has been exposed. Be more cautious from now on. Auntie Zhang will come over in a couple of days. You have worked hard during this period.”
“It’s no trouble, this is all within our duties,” the two said in unison.
Shao He’s gaze shifted from them to Xiao Linzhang, lifting the chubby little baby, with a look of adoration nearly spilling from her eyes.
Shao He noticed that the little guy had gained quite a bit of weight recently. When she changed Xiao Linzhang’s diaper, she carefully noticed that the rash on his body had disappeared, and his little bottom was no longer red.
This was because Qingxia and Qing Shan, who were inexperienced in caring for children, had wrapped him up too much in the past few days, causing heat rash and some redness on his bottom.
She had brought back ointment today to apply, but unexpectedly, the rash had disappeared, and the redness had subsided.
Xiao Linzhang was better cared for today than in the previous days, which made her suspicious. Could it be that someone had come by and also taken care of Xiao Linzhang?
Shao He narrowed her eyes slightly. After changing Xiao Linzhang’s diaper and laying him on the bed, she quietly sized up the two women, pretending to ask carelessly, “Has anyone visited the mansion recently, or has anyone approached Xiao Linzhang?”
Qingxia and Qing Shan immediately shook their heads, with Qingxia speaking first, “I have always stayed by the young master’s side, not stepping away at all, and definitely, no one has come near.”
Shao He looked at the two of them and did not speak any further.
At midnight, the sky was gloomy. Dark clouds covered the sky, and the wind howled violently.
The leaves in the courtyard trembled wildly, as if they might fall at any moment.
At that moment, the soundly sleeping Xiao Linzhang suddenly began to cry loudly, waking the sleeping Shao He.
She rubbed her bleary eyes, sat up, and picked up Xiao Linzhang, gently patting him in her arms.
Feeling the warmth of his mother, Xiao Linzhang gradually stopped crying and looked up at her with big eyes.
Shao He placed him on the bed, lifted the blanket, put on her shoes, and poured a cup of tea.
Just as she was about to return, footsteps echoed outside the door. Shao He looked out warily, only to see a dagger sliding in, slowly prying open the stuck door bolt.
Shao He hurriedly grabbed the dagger hidden in the room, tiptoed to the side of the door, and prepared to make her move.
“Creak,” the wooden door opened.
Shao He held her breath, quietly waiting for the person to come in.
Just then, the clad figure paused his steps, causing Shao He’s heart to pound fiercely and her grip on the dagger to tighten.
A moment later, the clad figure tentatively stepped in, his eyes fixed straight ahead, completely unaware of the person beside the door.
Now!
Seizing the opportunity, Shao He placed the dagger at the intruder’s throat before he could react, “Who are you?”
The man, caught off guard and attempting to resist, heard Shao He coldly laugh. The sharp dagger pierced his heart.
The man clutched his heart, staggered backward, and fell outside the door. Blood flowed through his fingers, and he clumsily reached into his chest.
Before dying, he released a flare.
“Whizz” “Bang”
A firework burst spectacularly in the sky; it was too late for Shao He to stop it. More footsteps approached, indicating that more than one person was coming this way.
In haste, she returned to the room, scooped up the child from the bed, and rushed out.
As she ran out of the room, she saw a group of clad figures blocking the courtyard entrance, staring intently at the child in her arms.
“Hand over the child!”@@novelbin@@
