Chapter 70 - 71: Who is Your Master?
Chapter 70: Chapter 71: Who is Your Master?
Shao He coldly watched the people in black, ignoring them, and hugged the child in her arms even tighter, bowing her head to gently kiss his forehead.
“Sweetheart, don’t be afraid… mommy will protect you…” she murmured.
Having said that, Shao He slowly started to back away.
The people in black slowly advanced, and Qingxia and Qing Shan dashed out, one wielding a soft whip and the other a soft sword, positioning themselves protectively around Shao He.
Exchanging a glance, Qingxia and Qing Shan said in unison, “Miss, find a chance to escape with the young master.”
Seeing this, the group of people in black simultaneously raised their weapons and attacked them.
...
Qingxia and Qing Shan fought with all their might, standing in front of Shao He to fend off the attacks.
Shao He, seeing this, dodged from side to side while protecting the child, occasionally striking back.
But the numbers of people in black were overwhelming, and the three of them gradually began to falter.
Shao He’s hands, holding the child, began to tremble and she started to struggle to keep standing.
Seizing the moment, one of the attackers raised his sword to stab at the child in her arms.
“Miss, watch out!”
It was too late for Shao He to dodge, as Qingxia and Qing Shan were entangled with other attackers.
Just as the long sword was about to pierce the child, at the critical moment, a hidden weapon was thrown, knocking the sword away.
Stunned, Shao He turned her head to look and saw from not far away, Ah Mo pushing Pei Huaian toward her.
The attackers turned to look, and a chilling aura hit them, making them shiver uncontrollably.
Ah Mo moved swiftly, appearing in front of the attackers, his sword slashing directly across one’s throat,
so quickly that the attacker didn’t even see how Ah Mo had approached before he fell backward.
Without pause, several more attackers were swiftly killed.
“Leave a survivor,” Pei Huaian commanded in a deep voice.
The remaining attackers, alarmed by the sudden turn of events, watched him warily, their nerves taut.
“Retreat!” the leader of the people in black shouted, leading the survivors to scatter and flee.
Unfortunately, two of them were still captured.
Shao He sighed in relief and approached Pei Huaian, “Thank you.”
Without his usual smile and in a somber tone, Pei Huaian responded, “You’re welcome.”
He reached out to take the sleeping Xiao Linzhang, a noticeable amount of the cold aura diminishing around him.
Ah Mo came forward and bowed, “Doctor Shao, two assassins have been captured. Shall we keep them alive for questioning?”
This time he cleverly did not look at his master but turned to Shao He.
Shao He pressed her lips together and shook her head, “No need, kill them.”
She had already guessed who had sent these killers; no one other than Chu Yu, and since Old Madam Chu had found this place, it seemed likely that Chu Yu also knew of her whereabouts.
Ah Mo, sword in hand, approached the two captives again and swiftly executed them. @@novelbin@@
Watching the attackers fall dead reminded her of the thugs from Anji Hall, who had been slain in the same manner, their throats cut without a chance to defend themselves.
Glancing at Pei Huaian, who was cautiously holding the child, she asked, “That time at Anji Hall, did you help me as well?”
“It was me,” Pei Huaian straightforwardly admitted.
Shao He looked surprised, feeling that Pei Huaian perhaps cared too much for her and the child.
But then she thought, perhaps since only she could treat his cold poison, he did not want her distracted—that could be why he took extra care of the child.
If something happened to her, Pei Huaian might have to spend his life in a wheelchair, or worse, it could endanger his life.
Seeing the unusual expression on her face, Pei Huaian didn’t explain much. Sometimes, too many explanations seemed like a cover-up; sometimes it was better to remain silent. He handed the child back to her and left with Ah Mo.
“Miss, you should take the young master back to the room first. We’ll clean up here,” Qingxia said, stepping forward.
“Yes,” Shao He nodded and carried Xiao Linzhang back to the room.
Sitting on the bed, Shao He pondered the recent events. Everything seemed too coincidental; when too many coincidences occurred together, they were no longer coincidences but deliberate.
As the first rays of morning sunlight entered the room, Shao He, looking tired, rose from the bed.
Qingxia and Qing Shan came in to attend to her. Catching a glimpse of them, a spark of insight flashed through her eyes.
“Qing Shan, I’d like to eat some steamed buns. Go buy some,” she said.
“Yes,” though Qing Shan did not understand why her mistress suddenly wanted steamed buns, she complied.
With only Qingxia left in the room, Shao He washed her face and sat down in front of the bronze mirror, with Qingxia picking up a comb to do her hair.
Through the mirror, Shao He glanced at the person behind her and tentatively asked, “Did you and your sister receive training from a young age? How else could your martial arts be so formidable?”
“Yes, we were trained from a young age,” Qingxia unwittingly revealed their identities.
Shao He’s eyes narrowed slightly; things were indeed as she suspected. These two were not ordinary maids, nor merely slightly skilled in martial arts—they must be trained Hidden Guards.
The reason she chose to keep Qingxia around was because this girl was loose-lipped and less meticulous and cautious than her sister.
“Then where did you train before, and who is your master?” Shao He asked again.
What do you think?
