Luo Jiner felt a sudden “thump” in her heart as she listened and turned her head to look at the Marquis. Seeing that he did not refute, but instead fell into contemplation, she felt certain that Shao He had hit the nail on the head.

There was an unpleasant feeling in her heart. The Marquis had rarely visited her room recently, so it was clear who he was having intimate relations with. Luo Jiner’s hand, hidden in her sleeve, slowly clenched.

“Marquis, you…”

“Go back,” Chu Yu cut her off mid-sentence, casting a meaningful glance at Shao He before turning away.

Yun Qian, upon seeing the two leave, approached to ask, “Can you really be sure of kidney deficiency without taking the pulse?”

If it were someone else, he definitely wouldn’t believe it, but with Shao He, he thought it might be possible.

...

Shao He shook her head and said, “Of course not, but my kick just now was not strong enough to make him step back two paces. He clearly had a tentative gait, and since he came in, he hasn’t looked very spirited, seemed a bit short of breath, his face slightly flushed, his eyes dull. These conditions suggest either poor physical health or excessive indulgence over a long period, but given how he presents himself, he seems to fall into the latter category.”

“These are the symptoms of long-term overwork and sleep deprivation. You don’t need to take the pulse to see that.”

“That impressive?” Yun Qian’s admiration for her grew more and more.

“It’s not impressive, it’s common knowledge,” Shao He turned back and sat down on the chair, picking up the teacup beside her and taking a light sip.

Yun Qian, somewhat understanding yet not quite getting it, nodded. Observing the tea drinker, he leaned over and asked, “Young Master Pei hasn’t been here for a while. What exactly is his identity?”

“Since when have you become such a gossip?” Shao He asked him, looking puzzled.

In the past, Yun Qian was uninvolved and detached, but lately, he seemed somewhat different.

Yun Qian touched his nose sheepishly and explained with a faint smile, “I’m just curious if he really is a Prince.”

“Since Chu Yu said he is, it likely isn’t false.” Shao He also had her doubts, but now they seemed to be confirmed.

Upon hearing that, Yun Qian furrowed his brows and murmured lowly, “If he is a Prince, why would he hide his identity to seek medical treatment?”

At that question, Shao He’s mouth twitched a few times. She looked up at him seriously and said, “If he had made it clear from the first visit that he was a Prince, I probably wouldn’t have treated him.”

Yun Qian was taken aback, then nodded in sudden realization. So that was it.

As Shao He looked at the sky and stood up, she said, “It’s getting late; I should go.”@@novelbin@@

Yun Qian immediately followed and thought of their recent conversation. He hesitated but still spoke up, “I’ll escort you back. Young Master Pei hasn’t come recently, and you’ve offended the Marquis’s Mansion. It’s not safe for you to go back alone.”

“No need, I’d like to walk alone,” Shao He said with a smile, waving her hand and taking her leave.

With her hands clasped behind her back, she walked down the sparsely populated path, thinking back to the last meeting. She couldn’t help but wonder, Could he be avoiding me deliberately? Did I speak too harshly last time?

When she returned to her residence, looking at the neighboring courtyard, after hesitating for a long time, she climbed the big tree, stuck out half of her body, and looked towards the other side, only to see the house door shut tight and the windows closed firmly, as if no one lived there at all, prompting her to furrow her brows in confusion.

“What’s going on? Why hasn’t he come back?” she muttered to herself, completely bewildered.

The night grew deep, only a few lonely lamps lighting the lane, occasionally disturbed by the cries of a cat.

Descending from the tree, she walked towards her room. Nanny Zhang, seeing her return, welcomed her excitedly with Xiao Linzhang in her arms.

“Look who’s back, it’s mother.”

Shao He took the chubby Xiao Linzhang from her, placed him on the bed, and gently pinched his tender, baby-soft cheek.

Xiao Linzhang giggled and squirmed away, then sat down by the bed, grabbing the hem of her clothes to play. His round eyes watched her attentively, as if understanding her words.

“How was Xiao Linzhang today?” Shao He asked.

Nanny Zhang handed her a cup of warm water, smiling as she said, “The young master has been very well-behaved, surprisingly docile.”

Qingxia added from the side, “Indeed, I’ve never seen a child as sensible as the young master, almost as if he understands what we say. He never acts up and is very steady.”

Shao He smiled and sipped the warm water.

After playing with Xiao Linzhang for a while, she stood up, feeling tired, and said, “You should rest now. I’m a bit tired.”

Nanny Zhang quickly advised, “Miss, dinner is ready and can be served at any time.”

Shaking her head, she refused, “No, I want to sleep first. There will be a lot to do tomorrow.”

Knowing she could not persuade her, Nanny Zhang could only reluctantly agree.

She and Qingxia withdrew, closing the door behind them.

Shao He lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep as that man’s cold and unfamiliar face kept appearing in her mind.

Was he avoiding her, and if so, why?

The next morning, Shao He woke up very early. After a simple wash, she left the mansion in a hurry.

Before leaving, she took a special glance at the neighboring courtyard and, unable to stop herself, walked over. Just as she was about to knock on the main door, she let her hand fall and quickly departed.

When she arrived at Jian Hall, before she could even get closer, she saw a luxurious carriage parked at the entrance, attended by two maids, one of whom looked quite familiar.

As Shao He walked over, just about to step into Jian Hall, a cold female voice from behind her called out, “Doctor Shao, please wait.”

Turning around, Shao He saw the carriage curtain being slowly lifted.
