Chapter 71: Crafting the Magic Scope – A New Path in Enchantment
The elder led Lyra and her companions through the winding streets of the village, the cobblestone paths slightly worn from years of use. The sun had begun its slow descent, casting warm golden hues over the rooftops, making the place look even more peaceful than before.
Eventually, they stopped in front of a small house nestled between two larger buildings. The structure was unassuming, its wooden exterior covered in creeping ivy, and a small chimney puffed out a thin trail of smoke. A wooden sign hanging above the door had the faint engraving of an open book and a magic circle—clear signs of a scholar and enchanter.
The elder stepped forward and knocked firmly on the door. A gruff voice answered almost immediately.
"What? Who is it?"
The elder chuckled. "It’s me, old friend. We have a young one here interested in magic—particularly ancient magic and crafting magical tools."
There was a brief silence before the sound of multiple locks being undone echoed from within. The door creaked open slightly, revealing a middle-aged man with salt-and-pepper hair, sharp blue eyes, and a neatly trimmed beard. He was dressed in a simple robe, his sleeves rolled up as if he had been in the middle of working.
His eyes landed on Lyra and narrowed slightly before flicking toward the elder. "You’re bringing me students now?"
The elder smirked. "Something like that."
The man sighed but then stepped aside, motioning them in. "Fine, fine. Come in, but don’t touch anything unless I say so."
Lyra stepped inside, followed closely by her friends. The inside of the house was cluttered but not messy—scrolls, books, and magical tools were scattered on shelves and tables. There was a faint glow from certain objects, indicating strong enchantments. Strange orbs floated in the corners of the room, softly illuminating the space with warm light.
Allen crossed his arms and leaned against a nearby table. "So, girl, you want to learn about ancient magic and magical tool crafting?"
Lyra nodded, her wings fluttering slightly. "Yes. I have an idea for a tool I want to make. I call it a Magic Scope—a device that allows you to see long distances clearly, even through obstacles like fog, darkness, or magical interference."
Allen raised an eyebrow. "A Magic Scope, huh? Interesting concept. Most long-range vision magic is tied to divination, but what you’re describing is more like an enhancement tool. Let’s see what you’ve got."
Without hesitation, Lyra pulled out a piece of parchment and began sketching. Her hand moved swiftly as she outlined the structure of the scope—a cylinder-shaped device fitted with enchanted lenses. Then, she added detailed rune placements, marking where mana flow circuits would need to be engraved to enhance vision.
Allen leaned over, stroking his beard as he examined the drawing. "Hmph. Not bad. You understand rune placement and mana flow design well. Where’d you learn this?"
Lyra smiled. "My knowledge comes naturally, though I’ve been improving with practice."
Allen snorted. "Natural talent, huh? You remind me of someone I used to know." He took the parchment and pointed at a few areas. "Your design is solid, but you’ll need special materials to ensure clarity and stability. If you use regular glass, the magic won’t hold for long. You’ll need something better."
Lyra nodded. "What would you suggest?"
Allen walked over to a shelf and pulled down a small box. He opened it to reveal crystal shards that glowed faintly with magic energy. "This is Moonstone Glass, a rare material found in dungeons and enchanted caves. It absorbs ambient mana and enhances magic cast through it. Perfect for your scope’s lenses."
Ella whistled. "That stuff must be expensive."
Allen smirked. "It is. But lucky for you, I have some lying around from my younger days." He then pointed at another part of the diagram. "For the outer shell, use Blackwood—it naturally resists magical corruption. As for the enchantments, you’ll need a strong magnification rune and a clarity rune, both inscribed with precision."
Lyra absorbed his words, already mentally adjusting her design. "I see… and for power stability?"
Allen grinned. "Good question. That’s where things get tricky. If you want this tool to be long-lasting, it’ll need a stable mana core. Have you ever worked with mana crystals before?"
Lyra thought for a moment. "I’ve used them for forging weapons, but not in crafting tools."
Allen nodded. "Then this will be a good lesson. We’ll use a refined mana crystal core—one that passively absorbs surrounding mana to keep the enchantment stable. You’ll need to carve a special containment rune into it so it doesn’t overload."
He walked to another shelf and pulled out a small, glowing blue crystal, setting it on the table. "This should work. It’s a mid-tier mana crystal, but with the right runes, it’ll function like a high-tier one."
Lyra’s eyes gleamed with excitement. "Then let’s get started."
The Crafting Process
For the next several hours, Lyra and Allen worked together, gathering materials and preparing the components.
-
First, they shaped the Moonstone Glass into finely cut lenses, carefully polishing them to enhance clarity. Lyra used her wind magic to smooth the edges while Allen adjusted the curvature for the best magnification.
-
Next, they carved the runes into the outer Blackwood casing. Allen guided Lyra’s hand as she carefully inscribed the magnification, clarity, and stability runes. The runes had to be exact—even a small mistake could ruin the enchantment.
-
Then came the mana crystal core. Lyra carefully engraved the containment rune, channeling a steady flow of fairy mana to stabilize it. The moment she finished, the crystal pulsed with a soft blue light, indicating a successful enchantment.
-
Finally, they assembled the Magic Scope, placing the crystal core inside the main body and securing the lenses in place. Lyra infused the entire tool with a steady stream of mana, binding the enchantments together.
The moment she let go, the Magic Scope hummed softly, its runes glowing faintly.
Allen crossed his arms. "Well, let’s see if it works."
Lyra lifted the scope to her eye and activated it. Instantly, her vision zoomed in on a bird perched on a distant rooftop. She could see every detail—the texture of its feathers, the way its chest rose and fell as it breathed. Even more impressively, she could see through the light haze of mist drifting through the village.
She adjusted the scope slightly, focusing on a distant magical ward protecting the elder’s house. Normally, magical defenses were hard to see, but with the scope, she could detect the faint, pulsing energy around the building.
A grin spread across her face. "It works!"
Ella clapped. "That’s amazing, Lyra!"
Yuki smirked. "I bet this would be useful for scouting and reconnaissance."
Allen nodded approvingly. "Not bad for your first enchanted tool. You’ve got talent, girl. If you keep at it, you could become an enchanter of legendary status."
Lyra chuckled. "I’ll take that as a compliment."
Allen smirked. "You should. Now, keep practicing. This is just the beginning of what you can create."
Lyra gazed down at her Magic Scope, a newfound excitement bubbling in her chest. If this was just the start, she couldn’t wait to see what she’d craft next.
What do you think?
