Vol. 11 - Chapter 567 - Haku vs Misato! And so the curtain falls on the opening act.
On the other side of the skirmish, Misato was gradually doubling down on her move against the Class-3 leader.
"Turn into cinders—«Hexa Phantom Burst»!"
"Thanks, but I am not too fond of saunas. —«Barrier Partition»!"
Haku unleashed six fox-shaped flame phantoms toward Misato, how efficient as ever, Misato blocked their advancement with a sturdy barrier.@@novelbin@@
"And now, a payback from me. Betcha you must not have thought I have offensive magic as well—«Radiance Blast»!"
While a huge variety of her arsenal had been painted in the color of support or recovery, Misato also had few offensive spells to spare. She chose a third-order light element spell from the 'blast' category.
A huge beam of light was shot from Misato's wand, but Haku intercepted with her own offensive magic.
"You really don't think such flimsy magic can put down my flames, eh? Beheld, the Fox Incarnation of Blazing Flame—«Gura The Fox»!"
Soon, a huge fox made of fire manifested itself in the battlefield. Its visage was like a demon of hell had broken through to appear in reality.
This was one of Haku's trump cards—a Lv10 spell. The ever-burning, fierce flames were given the shape of a fox, and were manipulated to ram against Misato.
The huge flaming fox and the light beam clashed against each other. An explosion ensues, and when the fumes settled—
"R-Rrgh, n-no way?!"
Misato's magic fall short.
"I am amazed you even think you can win against me in offense."
"Kyaaa!"
The huge flaming fox continued on its track even after the collision and crashed into Misato. It was a direct hit. But, partially because it had lost its original blast effectiveness due to earlier clash, and also due to Misato's own high RES, Misato weathered the attack.
"Ugh, recovery—«High Heal»!"
"Eh, boring. We're going to get stuck in a stalemate at this pace."
And for the healer Misato was, she easily healed herself. Haku blurted her dejectment at the situation.
"Prepare yourself. It's your loss."
"Sure enough. At this pace, I would first kick the bucket by tanking damage."
However, unlike Misato, Haku lacked any clear means to recover herself.
She wasn't without recovery items, but that wouldn't bring her any advantage into this battle of attrition. She'd to drain Misato of her MP for a chance to win, but that would only be counterproductive for her. After all, all of Haku's spells were wide AoE, and that comes at an exchange for high MP cost.
In the end, Haku would be cornering herself.
"It's really an eye opener to see someone aside from Brave holding their ground against me. Are you sure you're not a warlock in disguise?"
"How rude. I'm a bonafide healer. I just healed in front of you, didn't I?"
"A healer that's quite an expert in combat? Why do I feel something's amiss here."
"Well... it does be like that when you're in Class-1—I mean, in «Eden»."
"Err...if even healers are so battle-hardened, what kind of diabolical place are we talking about?"
Haku reeled back a bit when she tried to comprehend the situation.
It was true she was not a good matchup against Misato, who was a defense expert, and healer as main. However what really got her was how she couldn't overpower her even a bit. Perhaps, this was just an everyday thing for Class-1?
This confrontation had Haku look at their grade's strongest class in a renewed light.
"I guess, there's no helping it. It's impossible for me to defeat you alone. And, I presume this is why you had me separated from my team, eh?"
Haku's squad was no longer around her. They're forced to distance themselves by the tag-team of Rika and Pamela on the adjacent square.
At first, she had thought it was to avoid getting bundled in a wide range of her magic, but after giving a proper thought to it, it was a scheme to defeat her. Obviously, Rika and Pamela couldn't stand against her. They just weren't a good match-up.
In the end, she was tricked. If she continued at the same pace, she would risk running out of MP, giving Pamela or Rika a chance to catch her in surprise. She had to make a decision here.
"So, what will you do? Surrender, or... keep the resistance until nothing is left for you?"
"Did someone tell ya, you're not good at provocation? Easy skip~. I will choose my own way; retreat. Either way, the other side isn't doing well it seems."
Haku was also keeping a tab on the situation of Class-9 and Class-10.
Despite their number advantage, the two classes weren't doing well. And it also seemed like Class-1 got Keel, who they'd to shoulder and quickly make for escape. The anxiety was clearly written on Class-9's member's face.
As of now, the leader Jay was barely supporting their formation from collapsing by holding back the tag team of the Class-8 leader and his friends.
But as she sees it, they're running on borrowed time. Jay's HP wouldn't hold for long. The two classes were now preparing to make a retreat, but Class-8 was intent on chasing them down.
It would be foolish to stick here in such a scenario, she concluded.
"Are you sure you can escape?"
"I certainly do admire your resilience, Misato, but you still lack much to hold me back. So I gotta have you leave out of my tail~"
"Barrier boundary—«Prison»!"
"Break it for me, brilliant flames—«Grand Blaze of the Fox Fire»!"
Seeing Haku's retreating stance, Misasto fired her barrier spell to 'Bind' her. However Haku's subsequent spell blew it away.
"But it was fun~. Let's hand out on another time, Misato—"
"H-Hold on!!"
Misato shouted, but to no avail.
Haku escaped to the square her party members were in, use the mirage spell to promptly bring his squad members under her and then sprinted toward the north, from where they'd arrived from.

"Misato was really strong."
Haku reflected on her earlier clash as she retreated toward the north. She didn't show it, but she was genuinely impressed by Misato's resolve as she continued to stand up over and over.
From a glance though, she had a blast. While she wasn't a battle junkie she does love working out her body to full force. However it was a pity that barely any of her peers could be her opponent.
"But we're totally spent. We even lost two members, bummer."
"But the map's at least done, and we have an idea of the enemy's force. The gains are excellent for the class. Hehe, I was right in joining along, or else I would have missed out on so many things."
"Haa, well at least someone had fun."
"Fufu, totally~! I have already made an appointment for another battle, ah, the moment can't come any sooner~"
'More than battle, it sounds more like a fantasy of a maiden in love awaiting her date,' the scout boy thought in his mind, and along with Haku, who was anticipating her next clash, made their way to the base.
Albeit, awaiting them was the news that Class-9 and Class-10 had suffered irreversible damage.
