Chapter 5 - Wild Ability User
Smiling and shaking his head, he raised his voice slightly and said solemnly, "My name is Wei Wei. I'm here to report."
"Report?"
The bearded man was a bit surprised. He put down his pool cue, looked Wei Wei over, and said, "You're the new person transferred here?"
As soon as these words were spoken, the handsome opponent playing pool with the bearded man, as well as the fat man squatting by the stove watching the stew, all turned around in surprise, looking at Wei Wei curiously and examining him continuously.
Wei Wei smiled and nodded to everyone, "Yes, hello seniors."
"Oh my..."
The bearded man's gaze swept over Wei Wei's somewhat worn jacket and slightly youthful face. He seemed surprised but quickly covered it up; his expression softened as he smiled and shook hands with Wei Wei, saying, "Sorry, I didn't expect you to be so young. I heard the captain mention you would come. Wait here for a moment; I'll go call him from his office..."
Wei Wei quickly replied politely, "It's alright, why don't you continue playing? I'll go over myself."
"That won't do."
The bearded man shook his head, pursing his lips mysteriously as he took his pool cue and walked toward the end of the courtyard.
Up the steps was an office with the door ajar. The bearded man eavesdropped for a moment, then suddenly pushed the door open.
"Captain, are you in?"
"Ah...!"
A woman's scream suddenly came from inside.
Following that, a series of chaotic sounds emerged from the office, and a piece of pink women's underwear was thrown onto the bearded man's head.
"?"
Wei Wei looked at the scene before him, immediately feeling a bit dazed, "In broad daylight..."
"Oh my, oh my, what are you doing, what are you doing..."
Soon, a man wearing a proper suit vest, with graying hair and gold-rimmed glasses, walked out of the office. He looked extremely refined and elegant. He was very handsome and exuded charm—a stark reminder of how attractive he might have been in his youth, even at his current age.
However, despite his good image, his movements were somewhat flustered. Walking while pulling up his front zipper, he complained as he looked at the bearded man, who was giggling mischievously on the side, saying, "You can't do this anymore. I'm old now; I can't take such scares."
While speaking, his gaze swept around until it landed on Wei Wei standing in the courtyard, and a smile appeared on his face.
"Are you little Wei that the personnel department called about earlier?"
He smiled and said, "My name is Ouyang Jian. I'm the captain here. We've been waiting for you for a long time."
Wei Wei looked up and saw a voluptuous woman walking out of the office behind him. With a lazy demeanor and heavy makeup—and wearing a nearly transparent white dress—she languidly turned her head and exited through the back door.
Wei Wei immediately realized what this captain had just been doing.
Instead of shaking his hand, he took a step back in a restrained and honest manner, bringing three fingers together in a salute.
"Hello, Captain."
"..."
Captain Ouyang quickly came to his senses, awkwardly withdrawing his hand and smiling in embarrassment, "Hello, hello. Come with me."
He didn't take Wei Wei back to the office behind him but instead led him to the front hall of the courtyard.
Opening a side door to sit down, he wiped his hands with a wet wipe and put on his reading glasses. Only then did he open the documents Wei Wei had brought, examining them for a moment and nodding repeatedly.
"Good, good."
"Wei Wei, 19 years old, 13th-term student of East Mountain Tengshe Training Camp."
"Graduation evaluation is A-."
"The instructor's recommendation says: This student excels in both character and learning, has a kind and shy personality, is meticulous in his work, and is civilized and disciplined..."
"..."
Wei Wei himself was a bit stunned, then sincerely nodded, "Yes, that's me."
...
...
"Very good, very good, I didn't expect our small team to welcome such an excellent professional talent."
Captain Ouyang seemed very welcoming of Wei Wei's arrival, speaking warmly and politely as he examined all aspects of the information and documents. He became increasingly satisfied as he said, "Graduated from a regular training camp—much better than us self-taught ones! First state of the Life system, hmm, also received professional supernatural event investigation training..."
"This is great, we really need someone like this."
"Only 19 years old... tsk tsk, great potential..."
"..."
After praising him for a while, he closed the file and smiled, asking Wei Wei, "Where are you from?"
Wei Wei smiled and said, "Right here. I'm a local, that's why I applied to come back."
Captain Ouyang immediately looked him over and smiled, "No wonder I felt you looked a bit familiar. Where do you live?"
Wei Wei also smiled gently and said, "I haven't been back for many years. I used to live outside the city area and rarely came into the city. Now... my family is gone; I just passed by and took a look—the original house has been demolished."
"Outside the city area?"
Captain Ouyang suddenly frowned, as if recalling something, but his expression quickly relaxed. Nodding repeatedly and saying, "Very good, very good," he then returned Wei Wei's documents, sealing the information file in an envelope. Standing up, he said, "Alright, we'll handle the procedures in a while, and you'll be a member of our small team. Come with me, I'll introduce you to our team members, and we'll have dinner together tonight."
"Okay."
Wei Wei put away his documents and obediently stood up.
At that moment in the courtyard, the fat man who had been squatting on the ground stewing meat had already set up a large round table, with a pot of meat placed in the middle, surrounded by baskets of green vegetables, meatballs, small bowls, chopsticks, and stools.
"Come, come, let me introduce everyone."
Captain Ouyang came to the courtyard, smiling and waving his hand, and said to everyone, "This is the investigator just assigned to us for an internship from above. His name is Wei Wei. He's from a regular training camp; you should all learn from him in the future."
"Come on, put down the pool cues, come over and say hello first."
"..."
After everyone had gathered, he turned to Wei Wei and smiled, "These are basically the team members we'll be working with in the future."
"Our small team only has six people—seven including you. One is on duty at the guard office, and another is an intern like you. The remaining four are here; get to know each other, and everyone just get along well in the future."
He then pointed to the bearded man among the three and introduced him to Wei Wei, "Chen Qiang, everyone calls him Uncle Gun, in charge of investigations."
"Investigations? So he should be of the Enhancement system?"
Wei Wei smiled and nodded to the bearded man, "Hello, Uncle Gun, please guide me."
The bearded man smiled and said, "No problem, no problem, people from big places are indeed very polite."
According to the agreement between the Foundation and various consortiums and administrative agencies when it was first established, the Foundation does not have "law enforcement" powers. Therefore, the superhuman organization under the Foundation is called the Supernatural Affairs Research and Investigation Department, emphasizing the word "investigation." Its main responsibility is to clarify the causes of incidents, give timely warnings or predict the arrival of certain disasters, and provide suggestions for local armed solutions.
But regulations are one thing, and actual operation is another.
People in the industry understand that investigation often represents strength.
Being able to investigate means being able to fight, and not being able to fight means not being able to investigate.
Among the twelve demon systems commonly seen today, there aren't many that excel at direct confrontation. However, at this first meeting, Wei Wei couldn't tell whether this bearded man belonged to the Death Demon system or the rarer War Demon system.
Captain Ouyang then smiled and pointed to the man with a ponytail who looked as beautiful as a woman, saying, "Lin Fengjiao."
"He's in charge of information analysis in our small team, and he also writes event reports for the administrative office."
"..."
The man with the ponytail heard his name, and his expression became a bit unnatural. He immediately added to Wei Wei, "You can just call me Xiao Lin."
"..."
"Okay, Brother Xiao Lin."
Wei Wei looked at him and nodded with a smile.
Analysts usually possess abilities such as information gathering and analyzing supernatural phenomena. He wondered which type this one belonged to—or perhaps both.
While thinking, Wei Wei turned his gaze to the last smiling fat man.
"This one is amazing."
Captain Ouyang smiled and said, "This is Zhu Zai, he's responsible for the aftermath of missions. But it's not just the aftermath; he alone is also responsible for our team's logistics, handling voluntary odd jobs, material procurement, as well as emotional analysis and mental comfort work..."
"This..."
Hearing this string of titles, Wei Wei was filled with respect and took the initiative to shake hands, "Brother Zhu Zai."
After meeting several people, Wei Wei was really impressed, even though he still couldn't guess what type he was...
But one should never underestimate the person in the team who seems the most inconspicuous; they might be a hidden boss!
"No, no need to be so polite."
The fat man hurriedly stood up to shake hands with Wei Wei, very enthusiastically saying, "Let's have dinner together tonight, I just happened to cook a bit extra."
"Yes, let's eat together later. I still need to handle your entry procedures and arrange your dormitory and such," Captain Ouyang added with a smile, "Also, Sister Lucky will be back for dinner later; you can meet her then."
"Okay."
Wei Wei smiled and nodded in agreement, gaining an initial understanding of this small team in Scrap Iron City.
Scrap Iron City is a small city located in a remote area; even within the outermost Third City Circle, it's considered extremely small in scale.
The superhuman team stationed here naturally can't be very strong either.
The few people in front of him looked even lazier and more lacking in training quality—probably pure wild ability users.
To combat the endless emergence of three types of dangers in the world, and to turn these potential dangers into their own advantage, the Foundation once spent a great deal to recruit a large number of wild superhumans, exchanging their service for generous treatment and stabilizers.
For a long time, they were the main force in combating mysterious events and dangers.
It wasn't until recent years that people from training camps began to appear.
However, due to the lack of systematic enhancement and training, wild ability users are usually considered to have high potential risks.
Even if they're not fallen fanatics, many still have serious psychological problems.
But Wei Wei wasn't very concerned about this—
... Who doesn't have some issues these days!
What do you think?
