Scarlet Descent

Chapter 6 - The Core is "Luck"

"It's Wei Wei's first day here; add a few more dishes."

The bowls, chopsticks, and stools were already set out, and a pot of meat was bubbling away, constantly heated by an alcohol stove.

But because Sister Lucky, who was on duty at the guard office, hadn't returned, everyone felt awkward about starting to eat first.

It was at this time that Wei Wei understood the working style of this small branch.

The Supernatural Affairs Handling Team wasn't a normal administrative organization, but it had deep and close ties with the administrative office, forming a distinct yet inseparable cooperation model.

Routine security and handling of normal incidents were dealt with by the administrative office and guard office, but once supernatural factors were suspected to be involved, the incident would be transferred to the team's hands.

Before he arrived, there were six people in total.

Excluding the intern team member like himself, the other five people would take turns going to the guard office for duty from Monday to Friday, monitoring at all times, and screening out possible supernatural events for timely handling.

As for the rest, they were basically free to act as they pleased.

When nothing was happening, it could even be understood as working one day a week while receiving a high salary.

While waiting, Captain Ouyang used the time to go to the office to handle Wei Wei's entry procedures, tidy up his own image, and, with a wave of his hand, ordered his subordinates to prepare a few more dishes as a welcoming ceremony for Wei Wei.

"Anyway, it'll be a while before Sister Lucky comes back. Why don't we play a game of pool first?"

Uncle Gun, the bearded man, grinned as he invited Wei Wei, gesturing with a pool cue.

Wei Wei wasn't skilled at playing pool, but being new here and wanting to establish good relationships with his colleagues, he smiled and agreed.

"Do you know how to play?"

Uncle Gun sized him up and handed Wei Wei a thick cue.

"Not really," Wei Wei smiled. "I only know how to rely on brute force for miracles."

Saying this, he thrust the cue with a "pak," scattering balls all over the table, and, surprisingly, sinking two.

Wei Wei immediately felt that his initial performance in the team was quite good.

But when he missed a shot and Uncle Gun picked up the cue with a grin, Wei Wei realized he might have been terribly mistaken.

The bearded Uncle Gun looked ordinary, but when he gripped the cue and bent down to take his stance, his posture was extraordinarily graceful.

It was as if every muscle, bone, gaze, focus, even his slightly protruding belly and messy beard were strictly unified, every inch of skin and muscle adjusted to where it should be, like a statue carved by an ancient Greek master craftsman.

He wasn't perfect, but his posture at that moment gave a sense of perfection.

"Pak..."

Uncle Gun didn't seem to use much force, but the cue ball confidently flew out, making a ball bounce off four cushions before sinking into a pocket.

Wei Wei was immediately stunned.

Then Uncle Gun smiled, his shots quick and light, seemingly not needing to aim at all, just casually shooting in a matter-of-fact way, and the balls seemed to have lives of their own, happily diving into various pockets.

Every shot was extremely precise, clean, and crisp.

He took five shots in total, clearing the table, including one double.

"How can anyone play against this level?"

Wei Wei looked at his own cue that hadn't had a chance to be used, his expression slightly odd.

"Hehe, little brother, I'm of the Order system."

The bearded man hugged his cue and said proudly: "More than ten years ago, when I was just getting by in a scavenging team, I was bitten by a stone ghost in an abandoned town and got infected. But I was tough and didn't turn into a petrified monster. Since then, my physical strength and nerves have been greatly enhanced, especially in terms of precision, experiencing unimaginable changes."

"It's a pity we can't participate in various competitions, otherwise I'd quite like to play professionally."

Seeing Uncle Gun's slightly proud look, Wei Wei couldn't help but shake his head and smile bitterly, giving up the cue and admitting defeat.

"Who could possibly beat this..."

...

"So it's a wild Sequence 5: Order Demon."

Wei Wei nodded, immediately understanding all these unusual performances.

Corresponding to this series was the former God of Order, now the Order Demon.

Due to their adherence to order, their every move tends towards the optimal standard.

Whether it's living habits or daily routines, step by step, it extends to physical abilities, muscles, heartbeat, blood.

Further extending, it spreads to their behavior, and even to the operation of various precision machinery.

They believe in the golden ratio, which allows their actions to infinitely approach the most precise standards.

However, this also revealed that Uncle Gun's potential was probably not great.

Superhumans of the Order system often set their living habits to be harsh and strict, eating at exactly the set times, never waiting for others, and they usually have the best physique and living habits, with long legs and an inverted triangle body shape being essential.

But looking at Uncle Gun's big belly and those teeth blackened from smoking...

... In a training camp, this would get you hung from a tree and beaten by the instructor.

As for the type of demon power this Uncle Gun obtained, it was extremely common.

There are many ways for ordinary people to obtain demon power, but the most common are only three types.

One is like himself, chosen because of his special nature, actively beginning enhancement and control experiments.

Another is like Captain Ouyang and these wild ability users.

And another...

Wei Wei's mind flashed to the bar he passed on the road, a hint of gloom crossing his face.

This is the craziest type.

Actively approaching, even submitting to those demons, accepting their commands, and sacrificing according to rituals.

Pleasing the demons as if they were gods and receiving their rewards.

...

...

"Why don't you say that in front of Sister Lucky?"

Just as Wei Wei was slightly lost in thought holding the pool cue, someone suddenly picked up the conversation.

Xiao Lin, the handsome guy helping Zhu Zai wash enoki mushrooms, seemed worried that Wei Wei might be depressed from losing to Uncle Gun, and turned back with a smile:

"We all don't like playing pool with this guy. We've thought about selling the pool table several times and getting a mahjong table instead. But thinking about how embarrassing he looks every time he plays with Sister Lucky, we feel better and end up keeping this table..."

"Why?"

Wei Wei was surprised, unable to imagine what kind of person could beat someone with such precise control.

"Because Sister Lucky is just like her name, with 'luck' as her core. She once received a blessing from a mysterious power, gaining 'luck' that's hard for ordinary people to imagine. So, if you play pool with her, as long as she wants to win, even if she plays with her eyes closed, the balls will go into the pockets at all sorts of unbelievable angles. No matter how high the opponent's skill is, it's useless."

The bearded Uncle Gun smiled bitterly: "It's not that I lose every time, I can win about half the time with skill, but how should I put it..."

He scratched his head: "Playing with her makes you question your life..."

"Luck flow? Sequence 10: Luck Demon?"

Wei Wei was slightly surprised.

Demon power infiltrating the human world, bringing all sorts of unimaginable supernatural powers, has always been a key research focus of the Foundation.

They've assigned different sequence numbers based on the number of infected people affected by these demon powers.

The more infected people, the higher the sequence number.

For example, the Life Demon path is ranked first among the twelve main demon systems.

Sequence 10 Luck Demon system is already at the end, almost the least common type.

However, the higher the sequence number, the rarer the ability, and usually these are highly valued by the upper echelons, willing to go to great lengths to recruit.

Even wild ability users can often be given special consideration to enter the first or second city circles, or even some special central institutions.

Since she has such an ability, why would she stay here?

...

...

With some curiosity, Wei Wei declined Uncle Gun's invitation for another game and actively joined Zhu Zai's camp.

Considering it was Wei Wei's first day reporting to the small team, Captain Ouyang made a grand gesture of bringing out his treasured single malt whiskey, and Zhu Zai decided to add a few more small dishes, so everyone helped out preparing this lunch.

Even Wei Wei hadn't expected that his first task upon returning to Scrap Iron City would be cleaning fresh pig intestines...

After bustling about for over an hour, finally, just as everything was ready and they were about to start eating, a woman wearing a cheongsam gracefully walked in from outside, kicked off her high heels, changed into a pair of plastic slippers, and smiled as she approached:

"Smells good."

The team members all stood up to greet her: "Sister Lucky..."

Wei Wei also curiously looked over at this woman, seeing that she was tall with delicate skin, wearing a light red cheongsam, her hair coiled on top of her head. He couldn't tell her exact age, only feeling that everything about her seemed just right. Whether it was her charm, the light makeup on her face, or her slender waist and crystalline calves, even the white pearl necklace around her neck, everything was exquisite and perfect.

Is this the woman who obtained the power of luck?

This seemed more reasonable—the dishes had just been served, the meat cooked to perfection, and she arrived...

"Wei Wei, get up and say hello to Sister Lucky..." Uncle Gun quietly reminded Wei Wei: "She's in charge of auditing and reimbursement in our team..."

"Ah..."

Wei Wei also immediately stood up, with even more enthusiasm than before: "Hello Sister Lucky, I'm Wei Wei."

"Is this the new person mentioned before?"

The woman in the cheongsam sat down on the stool prepared for her, shook hands with Wei Wei across the table, smiled as she looked him up and down, then nodded with satisfaction and said: "Quite handsome. Don't be polite, sit down and eat."

"When you have time another day, accompany sister to the mall, I'll pick out a comfortable pair of underwear for you to wear."

"Thank you, Sister Lucky."

Wei Wei sat down, proactively passing her a cup, but feeling somewhat strange in his heart:

"Is giving underwear upon first meeting some kind of tradition?"

Cheongsam (旗袍): A traditional Chinese dress for women, known for its fitted shape and high collar.
