Chapter 23 - 23 23 I Want to Give Up
Chapter 23: Chapter 23 I Want to Give Up Chapter 23: Chapter 23 I Want to Give Up The next day, after Henry Ruiz finished his regular ward rounds, he went to Bryan Hawkins’s ward.
People Hospital, as the name suggests, serves the people and doesn’t specifically have VIP wards. However, there are five single rooms in the hospital, equivalent to VIP rooms in private hospitals.
Bryan Hawkins was staying in one of the single rooms, which happened to be available on the day he was admitted.
Henry Ruiz led the way, with two nurses pushing a treatment cart closely behind him. The Hawkins family was present, and Henry calmly nodded at the two elders before walking to Bryan’s bedside. He lifted Bryan’s blanket and squeezed both of Bryan’s legs.
“How does that feel?” Henry carefully observed Bryan’s expression.
“I don’t feel anything.” Bryan looked at him and calmly met his gaze.
“How about this?” Henry bent down and pinched Bryan’s legs hard. The skin turned red.
“The same.” Bryan still replied indifferently.
“Bring a wheelchair. Let’s do a full-body examination first,” Henry instructed the nurse knowingly.
“Yes.” One nurse departed to follow his order, while the other prepared a needle and gave Bryan an anti-inflammatory injection.
“Doctor Ruiz, is there a problem?” Austin Hawkins approached, worriedly asking.
Mainly because the expressions on Henry and Bryan’s faces were too serious. Bryan appeared calm, but Austin knew his eldest son would only act like this when facing a problem.
“Yeah, Doctor Ruiz, if there’s a problem, don’t keep it from us,” Sophia Lawson quickly added, looking at her eldest son with great concern.
Previously, Doctor Henry had mentioned that there might be sequelae after surgery, but she hadn’t thought too much about it then. After Bryan had awakened, he hadn’t suffered amnesia or felt any discomfort, so Sophia finally felt relieved. However, their interaction just now seemed a bit disturbing.
“We don’t know yet. We need to do some tests first. It’s probably nerve damage, causing some delayed response. To be specific, we need further examination, so the family doesn’t need to worry too much.”
Although Henry said this, he already had a result in his mind. It was probably not a delayed response, but a complete lack of sensation. Garth Aguirre’s anesthetic usually wears off when the patient wakes up, so it wouldn’t cause people to be numb and still have no sensation now.
That is to say, there might be a problem with the sensory nerves.
Telling others not to worry is one thing, but he also worried about Carolline Ruiz.
The nurse quickly brought over a wheelchair, and Henry accompanied Bryan through the entire examination, carefully listening to the opinions of doctors from various departments.
Three hours passed after the examination, and Henry’s entire morning was spent on Bryan. Bryan noticed this too.
“Doctor Ruiz, are you really worried about me?” Bryan was somewhat puzzled. Why would he be so worried about him?
“You are the life-saving benefactor of my daughter, Carolline. She is too emotional and reckless. She never considers the consequences before acting. Her bravery last time is not something we oppose, but we advocate exercising restraint and acting within one’s abilities. If it weren’t for your help, I can’t imagine what would have happened to her. Her mother and I owe you a ‘thank you’.”
“Doctor Ruiz, you are too polite.” Bryan finally understood the reason for Henry’s special treatment.
“The doctors have told me about your situation. The sensory nerves are damaged, which can be either mild or severe. I will have a discussion with some surgeons later to study the treatment plan based on your examination results. I think the chances of recovery are still quite high.”
“Quite high? If I can’t recover, do I have to rely on a wheelchair for the rest of my life?” Bryan knew that Henry said this to comfort him.
Even if he didn’t know some of the medical terms, he could still read people’s expressions. The doctors who examined him just now didn’t look optimistic when they gave the results, did they?
“…Yes, that’s true. However, you are still young… ”
“Doctor Ruiz, please, stop. Thank you.” Bryan interrupted Henry’s comforting words directly, “As for the treatment afterwards, I want to give up. When can I be discharged if that’s the case?”
“…If you are sure you don’t mind, you can be discharged in a week.” Henry wanted to persuade him more, but eventually gave up because he knew the patient had the right to choose, and he really had no grounds to say more.
He was just concerned that if Carolline found out about this, she would be upset for a while.
He couldn’t really understand Bryan. Everyone else wants to be healthy and would try their best, even if there’s only a 10% chance of success. However, Bryan seemed to give up without much thought.
“Alright, thank you, Doctor Ruiz. For now, can we keep this from Carolline? As for my family members, I’ll talk to them myself.” This matter wasn’t difficult for Bryan. He believed that his family members could handle setbacks with courage.
“Okay, but I need to explain this to your family as a doctor. I must clarify things. As for Carolline, thank you.” Henry sighed inwardly. He knew his daughter’s temperament. She cared about Bryan so much that she wouldn’t be able to keep this secret for long.
He didn’t mind. If Carolline could find a way to persuade Bryan to accept treatment, he wouldn’t object either.
What do you think?
