Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Fearing Crime and Committing Suicide Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Fearing Crime and Committing Suicide “Couldn’t persuade him?” After Carolline drank half a can of beer, Henry Ruiz casually mentioned the matter.

Today, after Carolline found out about Bryan Hawkins from his words, she ran away. He knew that his daughter must have gone to find Bryan with the intention of convincing him to accept treatment.

At the time, he thought Carolline’s trip would be fruitless. As a father, he understood his daughter all too well, knowing that once she had made up her mind to do something, nothing could stop her. So, he decided not to play the bad guy.

It would be better to let Carolline hit a wall and then rethink her choices.

Besides, he wasn’t very familiar with Bryan Hawkins, but his impression was that the man wouldn’t be easily persuaded, which was why he didn’t say more at the time.

“Dad, can we not talk about such a disheartening matter?” Carolline rolled her eyes, feeling a bit upset.

“Alright, alright, we won’t mention it.” Henry Ruiz laughed heartily, promising not to bring it up again.

“…I’m not eating anymore. Call mom to accompany you.” Carolline glanced at the suppressed laughter on the corner of her father’s mouth, feeling even more depressed. She got up and returned to her room without waiting for her father’s response.

Without saying much, Henry Ruiz let her go. After Carolline left, Emily Hill actually went over to check on her, worried. However, he reassured her not to worry about their daughter and let her be.

Carolline was hard to come by, and Henry Ruiz didn’t want to be too harsh on her like other parents. So, as long as it was something she wanted to do and chose herself, he, as a father, would support her as long as it didn’t violate any principles.

Back in her room, Carolline couldn’t help but think about what Bryan had said to her. He told her not to be so self-righteous and that it wasn’t up to her to meddle in his life.

That’s right; it wasn’t her place to interfere in his life.

Bryan still had Matilda Ferguson by his side. Even though, in Carolline’s eyes, Matilda wasn’t worthy of being by his side, it wasn’t up to her to decide. It was up to Bryan.

If Matilda was still willing to go to the Hawkins Family at this point, she must genuinely care about Bryan. Maybe it wasn’t necessary for Carolline to intervene in their affairs after all.

All she hoped for was that Matilda could continue to treat Bryan well from now on, then she wouldn’t have to worry about anything.

With these thoughts in mind, Carolline lay down on the bed and soon fell asleep.

——
The next day, Carolline had come to terms with the situation and was prepared to resume her normal daily life.

She returned to the dormitory early, and her roommates were all there. Today was Sophie Thompson’s birthday, and she had invited the three of them to have dinner outside.

As soon as Carolline entered, Sophie mentioned this to her. Carolline agreed but didn’t have a gift prepared. She put down her bag and immediately went out to prepare a birthday present for Sophie.

Sophie politely said it wasn’t necessary. Megan Clifton got up and said, “Why not? I’ll wait for you, and then we’ll go pick the gifts together. Don’t worry, we’ll be back on time.”

Agatha Gage had prepared everything early. She was a thoughtful girl. With only four of them in the dorm, she remembered every roommate’s birthday very clearly. So, she had prepared Sophie’s birthday present last Friday.

“Yeah, we’ll just go and come back.” After all, they were all students, not adults in society. It wasn’t customary to give money for a roommate’s birthday.

Since they couldn’t give money for convenience, they could only buy small gifts at the supermarket.

There was a supermarket in the school, not far from their dormitory. The two girls quickly arrived inside the supermarket and began choosing gifts. Megan Clifton made her choice quickly, picking a delicate music box and holding it in her hand while accompanying Carolline.

Carolline was indecisive; there were many gifts, but she didn’t know what to choose for Sophie. She was closer to Megan Clifton on ordinary days.

At first, she had also taken a fancy to a music box, but while she was hesitating, Megan had already made her choice, so she had to give up.

“Can’t you just settle for something?” Megan Clifton was somewhat speechless, seeing her so tangled. She had made her choice five minutes ago, but Carolline was still looking.

The supermarket in the school was limited. It wasn’t like the shops in the City Centre, which had a dazzling array of products for her to choose from.

“A 18-19 years old’s birthday can’t be just settled for, right?” Holding a pen holder in her hand, Carolline found it quite attractive. The slightly exaggerated cartoon image had a big mouth that could hold all the pens.

“Let’s go with this one. Just make up your mind; I have more things to tell you about.” Megan Clifton nudged her with an elbow, turned to pay the bill, and then leaned in again, “Well, it’s about your family’s handsome man, Bryan. Hurry up and come over.”

Carolline: “…”

When did the handsome Bryan become hers? Wasn’t he from her cousin’s family?

Carolline felt a little depressed, put the pen holder in her hand back down, and picked up a wind chime next to it. Maybe it was because of Megan Clifton’s words that she was increasingly losing interest in choosing gifts.

Eventually, she decided to give the pen holder as a birthday gift. When she was paying the bill, Megan Clifton’s music box had already been wrapped up.

She paid the bill, and it took a few more minutes for the packaging to be completed.

Seeing that there was still time, Megan Clifton bought two cups of cola from the store next to the supermarket. They sat on the chairs outside the supermarket, drinking cola and chatting.

“Handsome Bryan is so useful.” Megan Clifton giggled, making Carolline roll her eyes at her. Before Carolline could respond, Megan Clifton asked first, “How is handsome Bryan doing now?”

“You should ask your cousin about that, she would know better than me.” Thinking of Bryan’s words, Carolline felt that she really had no right to be so concerned about him.

Maybe he really found her annoying.

“My cousin and he are definitely over.” Megan Clifton knew her Ferguson family’s style all too well, especially her auntie. Even though her auntie and mother were sisters, the two sisters were very different.

As for Matilda Ferguson, she couldn’t stand her, even though Matilda was a few years older than her.

“…” So, she thought Bryan was hers? Carolline was still speechless. “Didn’t you say you had something to tell me about him? Why are you asking me now?”

“You didn’t go online today? I thought you were pretending not to know.” Megan Clifton realized that Carolline was genuinely unaware.

But that news came out early in the morning.

“What do you mean?” Carolline put down her cola, not understanding Megan Clifton’s words for a moment.

“The driver who hit Bryan committed suicide out of fear in the Detention Center this morning.” As Megan Clifton spoke, she opened her phone, accessed the city’s webpage, and found the news about the suicide. Although it was no longer the headline, it was still on the front page.
