Chapter 28 - 28 - Mistress
Chapter 28: Chapter 28 – Mistress
“I’m fine.”
Shen Heyu managed a small smile, pushing the stabbing pain deep down inside her. No matter what, she would never reveal her true emotions in front of others.
Always maintaining the most detached attitude towards people also served to construct a thick protective color around herself.
But Yun Duo, who had been closest to her in the company and served as her assistant for many years, how could she not see the hidden sorrow in Shen’s eyes?
She said with a smile, “Director Shen, if there’s something bothering you, you can talk to me! I will always be by your side.”
A simple sentence warmed Shen Heyu’s heart.
...
She said, “Mm, let’s get back to work. Don’t we have that mall construction site to supervise this afternoon? Prepare the documents.”
Yun Duo nodded, offered a few more words of comfort, and then left her office.
Pei Yansi’s business was spread across various industries, but the most prominent was this entertainment company. However, he was also involved in many real estate developments.
And having been by his side for so many years, Shen Heyu naturally needed to run around for all sorts of industries.
After dealing with the entertainment industry’s work in the morning, Shen Heyu prepared to visit the construction mall development in the afternoon. She rarely dipped her toes into this industry, but this deal seemed particularly challenging, so Pei Yansi specifically requested her to go.
At two in the afternoon, Shen Heyu, with documents in hand, left the office on time.
As she pulled open her office door, she overheard the unfinished gossip of an employee.
“Do you guys think, could Director Shen be the mistress, getting between Bai Sheng’er and President Pei?”
A sentence that pricked like thousands of needles to her heart.
Shen Heyu kept a calm face, well aware that rumors were the most useless yet also the most hurtful things, even though she was actually Mrs. Pei.
She said nothing and walked straight out.
The person who had been talking saw her leaving and closed their mouth, looking somewhat chagrined.
Yun Duo followed behind Shen Heyu, but she was not so easygoing. As she passed by that person, she coldly said, “Director Shen is not someone you can gossip about at will. Even gossip has its limits. Spreading rumors without knowing anything, are you longing for a stay in a detention center?”
After speaking, she didn’t give that person a chance to respond and quickly caught up with Shen Heyu.
But she saw Shen Heyu being stopped at the elevator by Bai Sheng’er.
Shen Heyu bent her elbow to tuck the documents under her arm, hands in her pockets, as her cold gaze landed on Bai Sheng’er without taking the initiative to speak.
Bai Sheng’er, seeing her aloof demeanor, was quite displeased, but knowing Yun Duo was following, she still spoke in a soft and delicate voice, “President Pei said to accompany you in supervising this mall’s work.”
Shen Heyu gave her a faint glance, “Where you want to go is none of my business, and your supervision is even less of my concern. You don’t need to stop me.”
“But President Pei said, you are to teach me. Director Shen, are you still angry…”
“If you want to go then go, but I’m not good at teaching. As for being angry, you don’t qualify.”
Shen Heyu cut off her unfinished words with a cold voice. The elevator had arrived, and she walked past Bai Sheng’er into the elevator.
Yun Duo followed her in, not even sparing Bai Sheng’er a glance.
The latter’s heart was aflame with anger, even a mere assistant by her side dared to ignore her like this. Unsatisfied, she masked the hatred in her eyes and followed after them.
Shen Heyu didn’t pay her any attention. She liked to go wherever she wanted using the name of Pei Yansi. As for teaching people, sorry, she didn’t know how, and as far as she was concerned, her position did not require leading interns.
If it were someone with exceptional abilities, it would be a different case, but Bai Sheng’er… forget it.
An hour later, the scorching afternoon sun baked the earth, and Shen Heyu, under the blazing sun, arrived at the shopping mall construction site.
This was a mall being built in a new residential area, some distance from the city center, with steel reinforcement and concrete visible all around on the site.
Shen Heyu followed the safety route into the site and was about to go directly to the person in charge when she heard a bout of arguing not far away.
“What do you mean by leaving the steel reinforcement here?”
“What do you mean, what do I mean? If not here, where should I put the steel bars, on your head?”
Shen Heyu followed the voices and saw, not far from a pile of steel bars, two men standing. One of them was dressed neatly; she recognized him as Zhao Zhi, an engineer from the company.
The other man was dressed in simple and plain clothes, covered in mud, wearing the attire of a worker, and looked like a construction worker on the site.
She approached, and Zhao Zhi, not having noticed her arrival, was still saying to the man: “Leaving the steel reinforcement here is very unsafe. If it falls on other workers, who will take the responsibility? How many times have I told you to pay attention to safety on the site?”
The worker retorted, “I’ve been a worker for many years, and I’ve never seen anything like this happen. You’re just an engineer who spends all day in the office, what do you know?”
At that moment, both men noticed Shen Heyu, who had approached.
They stopped their arguing as if by agreement.
Shen Heyu eyed the steel bars not far away. She wasn’t a professional site safety officer, she didn’t know about safety, but just looking at the height of the pile, she felt it was dangerous.
Hearing that the workers on the site were mostly uneducated and rough, with bad tempers and harsh speech, they frequently quarreled with the site managers.
She glanced at the worker and said coldly, “Of course, the engineer knows what’s safe and what’s not. Whose salary are you taking? Whose management do you follow? Even if you’re managed by the labor service side, don’t forget that we are the ones who pay your wages.”
“Moreover, this pile of steel, just looking at it, you know it’s dangerous. The fact that you’ve never encountered an incident of steel bars crushing someone to death is your good luck. You can go and look for yourself, see how many workers die from construction site accidents every year, and how many of them are because of falling steel bars.”
The worker, seeing that Shen Heyu was pretty with a cool demeanor and seemingly not easy to provoke, was momentarily speechless.
But then he thought, what right did this woman have? He had never seen her before and what right did she have to meddle? Just as he was about to say something, he heard her continue: “You now have two choices, either leave or immediately move these steel bars to another place.”
Her tone was undeniable, and her gaze was resolutely fixed on the man.
The man snorted coldly and glanced at the other workers around. Shen Heyu noticed his look and understood that many site workers would band together, and since they were all men, if they wanted to fight, the managers had no chance of fighting back.
Every year, there were also many site managers who clashed with them and then got beaten to severe injury.
Shen Heyu only gave him one look, understanding what he might be thinking, and said coldly, “If you have any other ideas, I can call the police right away.”
The man was taken aback by her words.
Shen Heyu, however, did not say any more and immediately had someone move all the steel bars to another place.
After the steel was moved, Shen Heyu did a basic supervision job, and what was left was to report the outcome to Pei Yansi.
Then he would deal with the thorny issues himself.
As she prepared to leave, Shen Heyu heard someone calling her. Turning around, she saw it was Zhao Zhi, who had run up to follow her.
What do you think?
