Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Man-made
“People can’t shut their own ears, and Shen Heyu unintentionally overheard someone saying, ‘Could it be that Lin Yiran and Director Shen have that kind of sugar daddy relationship between superior and subordinate?'”
Her steps halted as she was about to enter her office.
She turned to look in their direction.
Those people didn’t seem to notice her, still talking enthusiastically: “I think it looks quite likely, otherwise, with so many outstanding people in our department, why would they always ask him for help?”
“Exactly, aren’t we good enough?”
“But didn’t you say before that she had an affair with President Pei, how come she’s now trying to hook up with Lin Yiran?”
When Bai Sheng’er heard this, she said discontentedly, “What rubbish are you talking about, she’s so fickle, how could President Pei ever fancy her? She’s probably been with Lin Yiran several times already, President Pei likes clean women.”
“Really? Did they do it?”
“I did see her check into a hotel room with someone before.”
“…”
Upon hearing these words, Shen Heyu’s face remained expressionless, but inside she sneered.
When did she go to a hotel, she wasn’t aware of it?
She stepped forward, hands in her pockets, and said coldly, “What are you talking about?”
It was as if they only then saw her, startled by her sudden presence, they all looked up at her.
Seeing the very subject of their gossip appear, everyone exchanged glances, none daring to speak.
Shen Heyu, seeing this, smiled and said, “Continue, why have you stopped talking?”
Bai Sheng’er felt her smile was incredibly blinding, as if mocking a pile of trash, and retorted, “We just said what, Director Shen can’t stand hearing it even though her own conduct is questionable?”
Finding someone to back her up, another joined in, “Exactly, didn’t Director Shen hit someone before, and hasn’t she got issues with her own conduct?”
Shen Heyu remained calm with a faint smile, replying, “Do you know why she got hit? Because she was as foolish and ignorant as you. If you don’t want to be the ones getting hit next time, remember this is a company.”
“This isn’t a gossiping housewives’ shelter. If you really can’t hold back, then turn right out the door to Human Resources to resign and then get lost.”
Hearing this, they all shut up and ceased talking.
Bai Sheng’er was unhappy with the situation; the confrontation she had stirred up couldn’t just be quelled with a few words from Shen Heyu.
With that thought, she challenged, “You’re defending Lin Yiran this much, yet you dare claim there’s nothing between you two?”
“Of course, there’s something, he’s my subordinate who works for me. He’s not here right now, I’m defending his personal interests, which is normal and reasonable.”
Not waiting for her to respond, Shen Heyu continued, “I don’t have time to waste playing these pointless games with you. I’m warning you, this is a company, and if I catch you not focusing on your work again, you’re out.”
“You think you can fire me just like that?”
“Feel free to try.”
After saying this, Shen Heyu turned around and left without caring for her reaction.
Bai Sheng’er clenched her teeth with hatred, wishing she could go up and tear apart Shen Heyu’s beautiful face. At the end of the day, she was still Mrs. Pei, the CEO’s wife of the Pei Family, it’s just that not many knew it.
If she wanted to fire her, it would actually be a matter of just one word…
The more she thought about it, the more intolerable it felt, so she instigated the department to alienate both Lin Yiran and Shen Heyu.
The next day when Shen Heyu went to visit Lin Yiran at the hospital, she found his mood very low.
He was young, freshly entered society, and did not hide his emotions well.
With concern, she asked, “What’s wrong? Did something bad happen?”
Lin Yiran didn’t keep it from her, sharing proactively, “Yesterday, I discovered that the small group I’m in created a new chat without me and they’ve been speaking ill of me in it. I’ve been ostracized by them.”
Shen Heyu wasn’t surprised at this kind of thing, “Is that it? Anything else?”
“They say I lack work ability, that it’s all reliant on family connections, and your favor, Director Shen, that’s why I have my position at the company. In reality, I’m nothing… Director Shen, am I really that bad?”
As Lin Yiran spoke, he began to choke up. Thinking of his constant failures, and the young and promising Shen Jiangli, he felt utterly worthless.
Shen Heyu frowned, saying, “If you really lacked ability, why would I let you work closely with Shen Group? Don’t overthink it, focus on your recovery.”
Lin Yiran sniffled and nodded.
After leaving the hospital, Shen Heyu returned to the company and compiled all of Lin Yiran’s work reports and proposals, then called a department meeting.
In the meeting room, she took the seat of honor, and on the big screen behind, projected the work of Lin Yiran she had collected.
She then spoke, “I’ll give you three days. Whoever can produce a better plan and work content than his, I’ll fire him and admit what you said: that he’s only relying on family and connections.”
“If none of you can do it, then if I hear any more of this kind of talk—pushing others out because of your own shortcomings and denying their success—I will fire anyone involved.”
The meeting room fell silent.
Everyone looked at each other, none speaking a word. There was no mystery to it; Lin Yiran’s work was indeed exceptional, unlike anything the company had seen before.
It wasn’t hard to guess, given Lin Yiran’s wealthy family background — the education and training he’d received from a young age were far superior to their own.
Shen Heyu knew they were convinced and didn’t want to dwell on it.
She gathered her things and left the meeting room.
Lin Yiran stayed in the hospital for a week and once he could work on a keyboard, he was discharged.
Back at the company, he worked normally.
On his first day back at the company, his priority was to visit Shen Heyu in her office to express his gratitude. Throughout these recent days, she’d visited him daily without fail and had dealt with the rumors for him, and he sincerely appreciated her help.
Shen Heyu didn’t make much of it; after all, he had been injured while assisting her. Soon after sending him off, someone else came into her office.
It was Lin Yiran’s mother.
Mrs. Lin entered Shen Heyu’s office and immediately said, “You’re Director Shen, right? I just returned from a trip and found out my son had been injured while working with you.”
“There should be some explanation from you, right?”
Shen Heyu replied, “Medical costs and workers’ compensation, our company will cover in full.”
Mrs. Lin snorted coldly and said, “Who needs your money? What I want is an explanation. My son got injured, that was at your construction site, wasn’t it?”
Shen Heyu wasn’t sure what sort of explanation she sought.
Many accidents at construction sites occur unexpectedly; surely she wasn’t expecting her to explain the probability of accidental incidents happening?
Just as she thought this, Mrs. Lin then said, “I’ve had someone look into it, that steel bar was dropped intentionally!”
What do you think?
