Chapter 101 101: Formation
Tiana spoke up.
"So we're going to be fighting Lesser Daemons?"
Jane nodded and Henry then turned to Azrael.
"What is your plan?"
Azrael raised a hand for a few seconds to tell them to let him think, and after thinking for a while, he finally spoke.
"Alright, even though we don't know exactly what we'll be doing, we can still assume that we'll all be together. In that case, it's best to group ourselves into a proper formation so we don't waste time when we start. Gerald, Tiana, you two have strong ranged abilities that would help you detect enemies from far away, so you'll be our scouts. You'll take up positions at the front and rear. Henry and Jane are both heavy hitters, so it'll be better for them to take up positions on the sides, that way they can handle anything that Gerald and Tiana miss quickly. I'll be the generalist. Anyone that looks like they're having trouble with their fight will have me as a backup."
Azrael started to lay out the plan as they all leaned in closely.
But once he finished, Gerald scoffed.
"So you're basically going to be in the middle, protected by all of us. You're doing the least work."
Azrael narrowed his eyes at Gerald, and he was about to explain, but surprisingly, Henry was the one who spoke up.
"It's the most reasonable plan, actually. This way, we're all using our strengths while covering each other's weaknesses. And since Azrael is the most rounded combatant out of all of us, he can adapt to any of our fighting styles without effort. I like the plan."
Gerald scoffed in annoyance, and the other two girls looked like they were still mulling over the plan to see if it would suit them.
Azrael waited for them to finish.
Azrael needed to leave so he could get in some more training before tonight, but at this rate, he didn't know if he would have the time.
"Okay, I support the plan."
Thankfully, Jane spoke up just a few seconds later.
She looked up at Gerald and Tiana.
"Tiana should take the rear since her God aspect is useful for keeping watch behind us, and Gerald will take the front so he can scout ahead with his superior eyesight. If either one of them or Henry needs help, then Azrael can step in."
It wasn't lost on anyone that Jane never mentioned herself needing help, and Azrael really didn't care either way, so he ignored it.
Azrael knew that he couldn't use his God Aspects during the training exercise, so he was going to hang back as much as possible and only step in if he really needed to.
Azrael might not get a chance to secure any Divine Essence units with this plan, but he wasn't planning on using the training exercise to gain DE units. It was better just to finish the exercise and move on to other things quickly.
"That should be enough planning for today. If we hear more about the training exercise from Scar, then we'll change the plan accordingly."
Azrael dismissed the group once no one spoke for a while.
They really couldn't make any plans beyond what they had already done because it would end up being useless.
They had no idea what they were going to be meeting in the training session.
Henry nodded towards Azrael before standing, and Azrael couldn't help but consider the larger boy in a more favorable light.
Henry had been nothing but rational throughout the meeting, and if Azrael had to mention one teammate that he didn't mind being in a group with, it was most likely going to be Henry.
If not for Henry's actions, they likely wouldn't have even had this meeting in the first place.
"You better not drag me down, retards."
Gerald had to give a last parting remark as he left, and Tiana just bowed to the group as she left.
Jane noticed that Azrael wasn't getting up, and she asked him if he wasn't leaving yet.
Azrael told her that he planned to stay behind to train, and Jane looked at him curiously for a few seconds before she turned and left.
…
Once Azrael was alone, he brought the Essence Breaker out from his shirt and held it in his hand as he delved back into his core.
The black stone seemed to be taunting him with its appearance, and Azrael rolled it around in his hands a few times before closing his eyes.
The cool sensation of his Divine essence traveling through his body like nerves spread around him, and he released a calm breath and went into a state of meditation.
The process of controlling Divine essence was still a little strange to Azrael.
To him, Divine Essence had always been something that remained in the core without ever interacting with other parts of the body, and Azrael thought that the only thing it could be used for was powering the Aspects.
But now that he was actually moving his Divine Essence, Azrael felt like he was gaining a better understanding of it and how it worked.
Divine Essence wasn't just a power source that was used to activate God Aspects; it was a driving force.
Divine Essence had the ability to connect you with the outside world in ways that went beyond what your five senses could do. By pouring part of your Divine essence into an external object, you pour parts of yourself into that object, and you gain a deeper connection with it.
If the five senses were the most common way for humans to interact with the world, and instincts were seen as the sixth sense,
Then Divine Essence would be the seventh sense.
It extended our senses and allowed us to interact with the things around us in a way that was more intimate than ever.
Azrael felt the cool sensation on his fingertips spread around the Essence Breaker in his hand, and he pushed against it, trying to make it flow into the resistant rock, but there was no reaction from the rock, so he wasn't able to get it through no matter how much he tried.
This continued for a long while, and Azrael finally opened his eyes, and a few hours later, he sighed tiredly.
The rock was still black.
Azrael looked at the time and saw it was nearly four in the evening. He had to get back home to get everything prepared for the party.
Azrael got his phone out and rolled through multiple messages from Maddison.
Maddison had been texting Azrael nonstop since he gave her his number. Even when he was in combat training with Scar, she would send him messages about the most mundane things.
Azrael wouldn't say that it was annoying, but he wasn't used to getting this many messages, so he felt like it was too much.
After a while, Azrael simply stopped responding to her messages, but the most recent messages from her were about where he was.
Azrael told her, and a few minutes later, she was walking into the arena room with a smile. She had already changed back into her uniform, and it was obvious that she was about to head home.
"Hi, did you just finish your combat training?"
Azrael shook his head.
"No, Scar went easy on us today. We finished about an hour ago."
Maddison's eyes went wide in surprise.
B Class had finished their own combat class much earlier than that. Terra told them that since they were going to be having a training exercise tomorrow, then they were entitled to only half a day of combat class.
Maddison couldn't believe that Azrael said Scar went easy on them when they only just finished.
What would have happened if Scar hadn't gone easy on them? Would they still be in class?
Maddison just shook her head and smiled again. Azrael smiled back.
"You seem to be in a good mood. Did something happen?"
Azrael asked this, and Maddison felt a small blush rise on her face as she answered.
"Well… I guess I'm just excited. I've never gone to a ball with a date before."
"Really?"
Maddison nodded, and Azrael looked away from her innocent eyes. Azrael wished that he could have taken Maddison to the ball under better circumstances, but that wasn't possible.
Maddison spoke up again.
"Are you leaving already? If you are, then maybe we can go to the gate together?"
Azrael nodded as he stood and packed up his things.
Azrael started to leave the room, and Maddison fell into step beside him.
Maddison's expression turned slightly serious as she asked:
"Is there a plan for later today?"
Azrael turned to her curiously, and Maddison waited for an answer from him.
"What?"
Azrael asked, and Maddison seemed frustrated by his inability to understand.
"I'm talking about Harold."
Azrael hummed and turned away.
"You don't need to bother about him. I have it handled. Were you able to get the information I asked for?"
What do you think?
