Chapter 30 - 30 27 The Beginning of Fate
Chapter 30: Chapter 27: The Beginning of Fate Chapter 30: Chapter 27: The Beginning of Fate Su Zhanze didn’t seem overly worried about the situation, nor did he think it was a significant issue.
“Although nothing major happened this time, we might not be as lucky next time,” said Ye Chen.
“Is your mother angry?” asked Zhanze.
“She’s not angry. However, she warned me that if anything serious happens, I’ll be the one who’s responsible.”
“Ha Ha, don’t worry, we’ve got your back,” Ren Haotian said.
Ye Chen asked, “Zhanze, what did your father say to you?”
“He didn’t say much. He just mentioned that if I ended up in the last position in this competition, he will take me directly to the mountain for seclusion.”
“To live like a wild man?” Ren Haotian chuckled.
“I guess it’s not too different from being a wild man.”
“That’s pretty harsh,” Haotian said.
“I don’t think it’s a big deal,” Zhanze continued. “That damn Haoyu is so petty.”
Haotian chuckled.
They arrived at the pavilion, below which the river was flowing.
“Damn Yuan Jingxing, why hasn’t he arrived yet? If he delays any longer, we won’t be watching the sunrise, but the sunset instead,” Zhanze said.
Haotian shouted, “He’s here.”
Looking down the path, it was indeed them. They were lightly dressed and looked quite decent, except for Ye Chen who seemed a bit shabby.
Jingxing had brought Guo Yuqing, Jiang Shizi, and Bi Chun with him. But Luo Rui was not around.
Zhanze called out, “Where’s Luo Rui?”
Yuqing said, “She has a slight fever, so she didn’t come.”
“Did a doctor check on her?”
“Don’t worry. There are maids in my courtyard to take good care of her, so you don’t have to worry,” Shizi added. “Did you bring all the food? I don’t want to starve on the mountain.”
Haotian said, “We’ve packed five or six bags, even after sorting and trimming down.”
“Did you pack the braised chicken I like?” Shizi asked.
Zhanze said, “Don’t worry, I saw it being packed.”
Ye Chen picked up two bags and said, “I’ll set out first.” It seemed he was hesitant to encounter Guo Yuqing, fearing she was still upset about last night.
Zhanze shouted, “Let others take over when you’re tired.”
“Understood.”
Zhanze glanced eastward and said, “We need to hurry and get on the road. If we can catch the sunrise halfway up the mountain, that would be quite a feat.”
Zhanze and Jingxing trailed behind while Ye Chen and Haotian, carrying the belongings, were at the front.
The three girls walked in the middle.
Shizi said, “If I knew this earlier, I wouldn’t have eaten so much.”
On hearing this, Jingxing chuckled, “We haven’t even started, and you’re already struggling!”
“Who says I’m struggling? I’m just feeling a bit uncomfortable.”
“You should exercise more.”
The fog in the mountain was thick, soaking the legs of their trousers quickly, especially as they entered the woods where the dew was even more intense.
Zhanze, following Yuqing, asked, “Did you sleep well last night?” Remembering Ye Chen’s words, he was worried that Yuqing might have been affected by something related to Lan.
“Not bad, slept till dawn.” Yuqing had shifted her mood.
“Ye Chen said, you guys went to see Lan last night?”
Yuqing nodded.
“It’s my fault that made you worry.”
“Hmm. As long as you don’t do it again, it’s good,” Yuqing didn’t want to discuss it further. Every time she thought of it, it reminded her of what the two girls had said.
“How did Luo Rui get a fever?”
“She probably caught cold after forgetting to shut the window last night.”
Zhanze nodded, “It’s good as long as someone is taking care of her.”
“Shizi has arranged for someone. Don’t worry, it’s not serious. I think she’ll be fine,” Yuqing said.
“Let me carry your stuff.”
“No need. It’s just paper and pen for drawing. I’m not sure if I can use them up there, but I brought them just in case. If I can, I will draw something.”
“I didn’t know you had such interest.”
“Hmm, I wouldn’t call it an interest. It’s more like doodling for fun.”
Shizi pulled up her pants, “This fog is so thick.”
Zhanze said, “There’s bound to be some fog, but once the sun is out, it will disappear in two hours.” The view ahead was foggy, and the mountains seemed to be enveloped in white smoke, making it feel like a fairyland.
Shizi looked around, it had been a long time since she last came here. Though there weren’t substantial changes, there were minor differences. Especially after the harsh winter, it was the blooming season and most plants chose this time to bloom.
Some birds were chirping as they fluttered through the forest, drawing their attention. Deer were also out foraging on the mountain. The sound of water flowing continuously from afar was irregular but continuous, issued by streams formed by the melting ice on the mountaintop.
The woods were becoming denser.
The eastern sky was the whitest amongst all directions at that moment, likely due to the impending sunrise. Suddenly, a large batch of tall trees emerged ahead, and they continued to move forward along the stone steps.
Deer came out to drink water, catching Jiang Shizi’s attention, she said, “Yu Qing, look.”
Haotian said, “This lioness, whenever she sees prey, her reaction is different, seems like she wants to eat meat.”
“You tiger!” I feel like giving him a kick.
“I am not that fierce.” Haotian continued to move forward.
Zhan Ze said, “This is the mountain, be careful. The stone steps are a bit slippery. If you fall, you’ll roll down like a barrel to the foot of the mountain.”
“Did you hear that, roll down to the foot of the mountain just like a barrel.” Haotian repeated.
Yu Qing quickly reassured, “Don’t worry, Yuan Jingxing will catch her.”
“But she weighs so much, she might end up dragging Jingxing down too.” Haotian laughed.
“Yu Qing….” Jiang Shizi became anxious.
Zhan Ze chuckled.
“Stop gawking and keep moving. It’s rather steep here. You could really fall and roll down.”
Ye Chen, who was in front, was the fastest, leaving them far behind.
Because he had a talk with Yu Qing last night, calling her insecure and dramatic, afraid she was still mad at him, he didn’t dare to walk side by side with them, so he stayed ahead.
“Do you guys want to see the sunrise or not? Hurry up.” Haotian glanced at Ye Chen, who was already far ahead, then back at Zhan Ze and the rest, commenting, “If I have to wait for you guys to help me carry things, that would be really pitiful.”
“Ye Chen, don’t get lost. We won’t look for you.” Jingxing shouted.
Jiang Shizi chuckled, “He is a wild man from the mountain! It wouldn’t matter if he got lost; he can survive.”
Ye Chen ignored her and continued to climb upwards.
“Yu Qing, are you tired?” Zhan Ze asked with concern.
“Not tired.”
The forest suddenly got denser,
“If you wait another half a year, the monkey from last year would have given birth to baby monkeys.” Haotian yelled.
“Are there any monsters?” Jiang Shizi asked.
“Why fear the monsters? With you, the lioness, we are well protected.” Haotian replied.
Jiang Shizi glared at him.
Yu Qing said, “I haven’t climbed this mountain for a very long time.” remembering some past events.
Jiang Shizi commented, “The last time should have been two years ago.”
After thinking, Yu Qing replied, “Yes, two years ago.”
With concern, Zhan Ze added, “Now is the time for snakes and bugs to appear, everyone be careful and watch your step.”
The higher they went, the thicker the fog became. The ground seemed like it had just been washed by a heavy rain, droplets could be seen dripping from branches.
“The ground may be a bit slippery.” Zhan Ze reminded them. He stood behind Yu Qing, ready to shield her if anything happened.
Daylight came quickly. After entering the dense forest, it became even thicker. It was a thick forest layer, covered heavily by rotten leaves, giving off an unpleasant smell of decay. They all wanted to pass through it as quickly as possible.
“That monkey, surely he’s from the mountains. Carrying two bags of things, he still runs faster than us.” Jiang Shizi commented.
“Hurry up, we can hardly call ourselves martial artists when compared to him.” Jingxing, who was behind, said.
“No rush, the sun hasn’t risen yet.” Zhan Ze reassured.
Jiang Shizi looked back, the sky in the east was already turning slightly red. She shouted, “We really need to speed up, otherwise, we won’t have made it through this dense forest before the sun rises.”
Ye Chen was still energetic. He used to cut firewood in the mountain when he was in the countryside; he wasn’t here long enough to be weakened.
A group of foraging monkeys, which no one knew where they came from, chattered and frolicked in the treetops, moving back and forth. Uninhibited and merry, their movements drew everyone’s attention.
Across the dense forest, a few apricot trees in full bloom suddenly appeared. The trees had lost all their leaves except for the branches full of flowers. The scent of apricot blossoms was heavy, blanketing the area in a 30-foot radius, with flocks of nameless birds flying around.
Everyone stopped involuntarily, gazing for a moment, and found it hard to leave.
From behind, they heard, “The apricot blossoms are blooming.”
Jiang Shizi was panting, looking a bit like an old lady.
“Told you to eat less, exercise more, but you wouldn’t listen. You insist on stuffing yourself until you’re all plump. Keep it up and Bi Chun will be out of the job soon!” Jingxing said.
“You are the glutton!” Jiang Shizi continued, “Damn monkey, he’s run all the way to the foot of the mountain.” She seemed to dislike the argument.
Jingxing said, “We have seen it, why don’t you hurry up? If you stay, you can keep company with those monkeys. How about that? I saw a male monkey, seemed interested in you.” He didn’t know why he was saying these things, maybe stimulating the other party made him happy.
“Why are you always picking on me?” Jiang Shizi yelled.
Yu Qing laughed and said, “People who pick on you generally have an interest in you, that’s why they purposefully do so, their goal is simple, it’s to attract you.”
Zhan Ze laughed.
Jiang Shizi exclaimed, “How would I know, I never thought that you could talk so much.”
“That’s how it is. People who can’t express themselves normally do this. This method is easier to draw attention to themselves. Didn’t you know! It’s called having an ulterior motive, you need to observe carefully to know what the other person is thinking.” Yu Qing turned back and called, “Jingxing, am I right?”
“Ha, I’m not interested in her at all.” He was clearly not so sure.
“Of course you would say that, how could you possibly admit it!”
What do you think?
