Surgery Godfather

Chapter 284 - 0268: Crisis

Chapter 284: Chapter 0268: Crisis

With Xiao Su taking care of his parents, Yang Ping felt at ease.

The time of the surgery was still undecided. The pregnant woman’s entire examination results were now available. Her blood clotting function still posed a serious problem, and surgery could trigger massive bleeding.

Amniotic fluid embolism remained a probability, but it was certain that the surgery would cause bleeding. The typical techniques for blocking large blood vessels were completely ineffective in this case.

With two major risks in front of her, the pregnant woman showed no fear and insisted on having the surgery.

The amniotic bands around the fetus’s limbs and neck were already in stage three, severely impacting the blood supply to the distal parts. Both hands and feet, along with a few fingers and toes, had fused together. @@novelbin@@

If the condition continued to progress, it would reach stage four, the most serious, which could cause limb disappearance due to the constriction bands, a sort of ‘amputation’ inside the womb.

...

If it occurred around the neck, the head would suffer from lack of blood and oxygen, ultimately leading to the death of the fetus.

The woman hadn’t eaten breakfast or drunk water, preparing herself to go into surgery at any moment.

Obstetricians had been constantly monitoring her – the baby which used to be active, was now noticeably quieter, a sign of oxygen deprivation in its head. If they didn’t operate soon, it might be too late.

The obstetricians immediately reported the situation to Director Mei and Director Ke, who felt that the condition had deteriorated.

“Less fetal movement?” Director Mei was sensitive to this.

“Only eight times in twelve hours!”

If the fetal movements were less than ten in twelve hours, it was dangerous, extremely dangerous. Postponing any longer could result in a stillbirth.

They had originally planned to wait, resolve the coagulation dysfunction issue, and then proceed with the surgery.

There was no time to wait now – either they perform the surgery immediately, or not at all. For the fetus, it was now a matter of life and death.

Director Mei and Director Ke informed the pregnant woman about the latest condition. She responded calmly, “Doctor, please perform the surgery quickly. I want to save this child!”

She clutched her husband’s hand, “Honey, I beg you, can you give me a chance? Let me have the surgery to save our baby.”

Turning to the doctors, she said, “Directors Mei and Ke, I know the surgery carries a huge risk, but it’s not an absolute contraindication in medicine. I can record a video before the surgery, agreeing to bear all the risks of the operation.”

“Mingfang, promise me, support me, okay? If we don’t try now, I will never feel at peace!” The pregnant woman held her husband’s hand tightly and pleaded anxiously.

Determined and fearless, the pregnant woman made up her mind. Her husband paced back and forth by the bedside, finding it difficult to make a decision.

He clenched his teeth, stopped pacing, sat down beside the bed, wiped his wife’s forehead sweat and said, “Doctor, I agree. Please, is the risk really that high?”

“This operation is like trying to take off during bad weather. However, we’ll give our all. If there is an unexpected event during surgery, like sudden major bleeding or an amniotic fluid embolism, we’ll abandon saving the baby and focus on rescuing the mother,” Director Ke said with frankness, without any bias.

The husband exchanged a look with his wife and nodded, “In case of emergencies, concentrate on rescuing the adult, forsake the child.”

“Let’s record a video now in front of the doctors!”

The pregnant woman and her husband recorded a video reading out the informed consent for the surgery using their phone, then sent it to Director Mei and Director Ke.

The idea was to ensure that the doctors put their all into the surgery without worrying about any internal family conflicts.

Yang Ping had been waiting in the department for the surgery to start. Director Ke had instructed him to be on standby at all times since the condition of the fetus could deteriorate at any moment. If the family agreed, they would swiftly arrange an emergency surgery, for which they had already completed the preparations.

He entered System Space, where the waterfall was growing stronger and the tree grander, the sky looked clear and majestic.

He spent thirty thousand points to buy three hundred fetal surgeries. The more surgeries he performed, the easier it got to master the technique. The early operations were accumulating the foundation for the later ones.

Fetal surgeries were exceedingly challenging because most of the fetus had to be immersed in the amniotic fluid to maintain its body temperature during the procedure, with only the local part of the surgery exposed.

Moreover, the fetus was small, its structures delicate – even a slight shake of the hand could potentially slice off an organ.

For this pregnant woman, her clotting function was still impaired, making it hard to stop the bleeding, and the risk of major bleeding was high.

Therefore, the hemostasis had to be meticulous during the surgery, the operating fast enough to minimize bleeding time.

Another risk was an amniotic fluid embolism, which required the uterine incision to not be soaked in amniotic fluid, to prevent the fluid from entering the venous sinuses.

All these details needed to be in check without any slip-ups to avoid dangers.

In terms of relieving the amniotic band – the Z-shaped remodeling method, commonly used in orthopedics, would be the solution.

It could alter the path of the band. For instance, with a scar contracted in the web of the hand, remodeling could relocate the scar outside the web, converting the linear scar into a Z-shape, and alleviating the contraction entirely.

Amniotic band syndrome also required a Z-shaped remodeling to loosen the constrictive band, change its course, and move it aside at an oblique angle, making the surgical incision zigzag.

In this way, the constrictive band would be alleviated. Similar to cycling on a steep slope, going straight up is hard, but following a zigzag path to ascend would be much easier.

After performing the surgery, Yang Ping rested in System Space. He was increasingly finding solace in the tranquility of performing surgeries alone in the space, where time vanished. No matter how long he stayed, it took just an instant in reality, using up none of its time.

This gave him ample time to think and prepare for any complicated unheard-of diseases.

Now, the system only assigned stage tasks, not single tasks. Each surgery was a single task that earned points, while stage tasks awarded substantial points.

In this way, the points accumulated at each stage could be used to participate in surgery training, access the library, and prepare to complete the task of the next stage.

Director Ke from Pediatric Surgery asked Yang Ping to come to his department to prepare for the surgery.

As Song Zimo was present in the department, Yang Ping, free of worries, rushed to Pediatric Surgery to hear any special instructions Director Ke might have before the surgery.

The doctors performing the surgery had to hold another discussion to ensure the safety of the procedure.

“Yang, there has been a change in the situation, and it’s quite urgent,” Director Ke said gravely.

“The fetal activity has decreased considerably, posing a high risk. If it remains like this for long, the baby will die, and even if it survives, it will have severe cognitive disabilities due to abnormal brain development,” Director Mei said anxiously.

“We need to complete the surgery within an hour. It’s difficult, but we can only try our best,” Director Ke remarked, feeling inadequate.

This type of surgery required high precision. Preparing the anesthesia alone would take half an hour, leaving them only half an hour to address the constriction around the neck and improve the blood supply to the head.

Director Ke knew Yang Ping was exceptional in microsurgery, but reattaching a severed finger and performing a fetal surgery were entirely different. However much they wanted to rush, they couldn’t.

They could only do their best. Director Ke led everyone hurriedly towards the operating room.
