Chapter 4 – A gentleman's revenge is never too late even after twenty years
Chen Xun had mastered various wilderness survival skills to a reasonable degree. Though not an expert, he was competent in all of them.
"Moo~~"
Black Bull looked anxiously towards the farmland, a field it had plowed with immense effort.
"Don't worry, we'll find a better plot of land later, one that's several times larger than this!"
"Moo! Moo!"
Black Bull nodded frantically as Chen Xun painted a grand vision, bamboozling the bull into a daze.
"However, we still have a great vengeance to exact, and to ignore it would not befit a gentleman."
Chen Xun rose thunderously, spinning his mountain-axing axe in his hand, "Those people must be old and frail by now, Bull. Strike while the iron is hot and reclaim our rice!"
Moo!!
The ground shook and stones flew as Black Bull raged. Its horns had only begun to regrow, and it would be years before they were fully restored, leaving even the cows in the village indifferent to it.
Inside the cave, they packed up. The suona and other essentials for traveling were a must, all carried by Black Bull.
Their strength was such that pots and pans were child's play to them. Anything they couldn't take was left for Little Black and his family, including that fertile plot of land.
The next day, outside the homes of Little Black and others who had helped Chen Xun, including the blacksmith and the carpenter, heaps of rice appeared at their doorsteps. Their eyes shone with joy, praising the heavens for their good fortune.
Little Black's wife was still counting the bounty, her face blooming with smiles at such good fortune.
Inside, Little Black, now middle-aged and more mature, held a letter in his hand. Having been taught to read by Chen Xun, he understood it well.
"Little Black, the fertile land outside the cave is now yours to take care of, and make sure to look after Big Black."
"This departure may mean we'll never meet again in this life. The world is vast and splendid, and it's time to see it. Remember to always stay optimistic, your ever-dashing Brother Xun."
Little Black read each word, his eyes misting over. He had followed Brother Xun since childhood and had long considered him a big brother.
Memories flashed through his mind: the stolen rice, the burnt thatched huts, being chased out of the village while working... Though times were tough, Brother Xun always seemed to embrace life with enthusiasm.
"Brother Xun, may the winds be ever in your favor."
Little Black said warmly, smiling as he looked out the window to the clear, cloudless sky—a perfect day to set out.
Three months later, outside a neighboring village, in a pit.
A man and a bull, faces weathered by the elements and clothes covered in dust, Chen Xun bit into a pancake and handed it to Black Bull.
"As expected, we've got the lay of the neighboring village. Let's start with Old Wang's household."
Chen Xun's eyes gleamed with determination. What he had in abundance was patience and time. The Wang family's ancestral graves, their fields, those who had beaten them—all had been thoroughly investigated.
"Bull, let's get to work!"
Chen Xun donned a bandit's mask, revealing only his eyes, nose, and mouth, and even prepared a disguise for Black Bull.
On a night with a dark sky and howling wind, man and bull stood atop a mound, motionless in the gust, the very image of bandits.
They walked among the mountains, bathed in moonlight, with a chilling breeze swirling around the graves. But compared to the wrongs they had suffered, what was this?
"The grave of Wang Defa."
A glint in Chen Xun's eye, "This is it," he growled. "Bull, dig!"
Moo!
Black Bull, full of excitement, roared and kicked up a storm as it dug furiously. Chen Xun kicked the gravestone to pieces, shouting in satisfaction as the earth flew and the coffin was revealed.
They flipped it open, revealing a skeleton, then took off running, disappearing in a cloud of dust.
In the Wang family's fields, Black Bull plowed furiously, flinging dirt everywhere. It vented its anger while Chen Xun watched, his eyelids twitching at the sight of the bull's grudge.
The field was left in shambles, but Chen Xun and Black Bull looked on at their handiwork with satisfaction.
The next day, Chen Xun led Black Bull into Old Wang's home.
"Who's there?!"
A man over fifty, leaning on a walking stick, shouted in alarm at the sight of the masked intruder.@@novelbin@@
"I'm your long-lost father!"
Chen Xun roared, recognizing the man as Wang Tianming, who had beaten him the worst. With a kick, Chen Xun snapped his walking stick.
Stepping forward, he controlled his strength and slapped the man across the face, knocking out his few remaining teeth.
"Mercy, good sir! Mercy!"
Support us at .
Wang Tianming spat out blood. He was under attack by bandits.
"Twenty years ago, you led the theft of our rice. Today, I've come to settle the score!"
"Ah?!"
Wang Tianming was shocked, barely remembering the incident from two decades ago. But seeing the black bull outside, he suddenly recalled something.
Moo!
A big yellow dog passed by the Wang house, and Black Bull charged, sending the dog flying with a yelp before it scampered away.
Chen Xun wouldn't let the Wang family off easily. He shook their eggs until the yolks were mixed and chopped the earthworms in the ground into eight pieces with his axe.
Wang Tianming sat on the ground, crying and calling for help.
"Father! Who's this villain?!"
"How dare you come to the Wang house and commit violence!"
...
Shouts and cries came from outside as a crowd of young men, armed with hoes and knives, rushed over.
"Bull, let's go!"
Chen Xun shouted, and they vaulted over the wall, Chen Xun giving Black Bull a push on its backside.
"Stop, thief!"
"Face me in a fair fight if you dare!"
"Don't let us catch you, you cowardly vermin, utterly despicable!"
...
The village was in an uproar, hundreds of people in hot pursuit, dust billowing, all armed and ready.
"Ha ha ha, oh, they can't catch up."
Chen Xun laughed, looking back as he and Black Bull fled. He scoffed at the trailing dust, "Is that all you've got?!!"
Roar!
Roar!
The men roared in outrage, quickening their pace in a furious chase, but no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't catch up, only watching as the duo got further and further away.
The most outrageous part was that even Black Bull was faster than them!
Moo! Moo!
A thunderous fart erupted from Black Bull, as if it had been holding it in for days, filling the air with a suffocating stench. Chen Xun's face contorted as if he had eaten something foul.
"Ah! So stinky!"
"Damn it!!"
Gag!
The pursuing villagers went weak, propping themselves up with their hands, retching uncontrollably, disbelief in their eyes at the existence of such a foul smell.
Wang Tianming, following from behind, was livid. If only he were twenty years younger, he would have flayed the bandit alive!
"Old Wang, your family's ancestral grave has been dug up! The coffin lid has been lifted!"
"Ah?!"
"Old Wang, hurry back and check your fields, it looks like pigs have been rooting through them!"
"Ah?!"
Hearing the voices behind him, Wang Tianming felt the world spin and passed out cold.
Meanwhile, man and bull were long gone, leaving behind only a legend of banditry in the village.
What do you think?
