CHAPTER 4 The Wreckage

The sun dipped lower on the horizon, casting long shadows over the ruins that had once been Da West's family home. The sight of the wreckage struck him like a phantom pain; memories of laughter and warmth haunted him, mingled with the scars left by the Void Beast invasion. He had avoided this place since the collapse, but now, he felt an undeniable pull to return—to sift through the debris in search of anything useful.

With each step closer, Da steeled his resolve. What did he truly expect to find? There was little left here apart from broken furniture and shattered remnants of a life that had been. Yet, the GUNDAM System pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat, its presence a guiding light in the encroaching darkness.

"System, can you analyze the wreckage for any usable materials?" he asked, even as he knelt beside a dented piece of metal that jutted from the ground like a lost tooth from some titanic beast.

"Scanning for materials..." the familiar voice responded. "Please wait."

As Da began to clear away debris, using his hands to brush dirt and shattered wood to the side, a faint glow illuminated from the dust. He paused, eyes widening at the sight of an object glimmering amidst the rubble.

"Material detected," the system proclaimed, its tone signaling an urgent discovery. "Black Iron Level Material (Firestone) identified. This material is suitable for lower-tier mechanical constructs, specifically fire-type units."

Da stared in disbelief. He carefully picked up the rough-edged stone, feeling its warmth pulsate within his grip. It was heavier than it looked, almost vibrating with latent energy. "What's a Firestone?"

"Firestone is an elemental resource typically used to generate heat and flame. It can be utilized in the construction of low-mecha soldiers, specifically the prototype 'Fire Boy,' which requires 50 iron, 1 Firestone, and 5 wood units," the system explained.

"Fire Boy?" Da echoed, intrigue sparking within him. "What does it do?"

"Fire Boy is designed to function as a low-level frontline soldier equipped with flame-based weaponry," the voice elaborated. "It is ideally suited for controlling the battlefield and providing warmth in harsh environments. Engaging in offensive and defensive tactics can enhance your strategic capabilities during combat scenarios."

Da's heart raced. This Firestone could change everything. "So, I just need to find—"

"Calculating requirements," the system interrupted. "In total, you will need to gather 50 iron, 1 Firestone, and 5 wood units to construct a single Fire Boy unit."

He had the Firestone, but the other materials loomed like clouds on the horizon, distant yet inevitable. "How do I acquire iron and wood? Are there places where I can readily find them?"

"Low-grade iron can be sourced from ruins, abandoned factories, and caves throughout the region. Normally, wood can be gathered from forested areas or purchased from local merchants," the system offered, laying out the path in front of him.

Da stood up, the Firestone clenched tightly in his fist. While the landscape of GreenLand City was still recovering, he knew that now was the time to act. "I'll head out to the nearby ruins—there's bound to be something of use there. I'll meet Mia later to discuss any leads on wood and iron supply," he decided, a plan forming in his mind.

As he moved around the wreckage, he was keenly aware that he must keep the existence of the GUNDAM System a secret, especially to someone like Mia, who had a high profile and a powerful family association. The danger of exposing himself to those who would seek to exploit his newfound powers hung heavy in the air.

Scraps of metal glinted in the fading light; he worked quickly, assessing each piece and using the system to appraise them. Just as he began to lose hope, he spotted a rusted barrel half-buried beneath the rubble.

"System, scan that barrel," he instructed, approaching cautiously.

"Scanning..." The system's tone shifted to one of positivity. "Material detected: Low-grade iron x3."

"Only three?" Da spat, slumping against the barrel in frustration. "I need more than that."

"Consider searching nearby structures or the industrial district for larger concentrations of leftover materials. The recent calamity has displaced many resources," the system advised.

"Right," Da said, the drive within him igniting anew. "Let's go."

Moving resolutely through the remnants of the familiar neighborhood, he recalled the stories of abandoned buildings his father had told him, tales that echoed as he navigated through twisted metal and shattered glass. As night began to drape the city, Da ventured deeper into the ruins, determination woven into each step.

He arrived at an old factory that loomed ominously against the night sky, its crumbling façade often neglected, but home to whispers of untapped resources. Draughts of wind howled through broken windows, creating an eerie atmosphere.

"System, scan the factory," Da commanded, excitement and trepidation coursing through him. The darkness inside felt thick, suffocating yet calling, almost as if the shadows held secrets of their own.

"Scanning... Warning: possible presence of residual energy signatures detected. Advancing with caution is advised," the system alerted him.

"Residual energy? Is it dangerous?" Da's pulse quickened.

"Likely remnants of battle or minuscule elemental forces left active by the multi-layered awakening," the system replied. "Proceed carefully."

With his heart racing, he stepped into the factory, the darkness enveloping him like a thick cloak. The echoes of the past bounced around him, every creak of the building making him jump, the dust swirling as an old breeze moved through the derelict space.

He began to sift through the remnants of what was once a thriving workshop. Tools and remnants of machinery lay scattered, and as he reached for an old wrench, the system chimed in.

"Material detected: Low-grade iron x10. Caution: residual energy fluctuations detected nearby."

"Great," Da murmured, pocketing the wrench and collecting the shimmering iron pieces. "This is worth it."

But that's when he felt it—a tingling in the air, a flicker of warmth that shot through his veins, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He turned slowly, and amid the shadows, something caught his eye—glowing embers moving and twisting almost playfully, a swirling dance atop the cracked cement floor.

"System, what is that?" he asked, albeit with a hint of unease.

"Presence identified: Ember Sprout—a low-level fire elemental. Generally harmless, but unpredictable. Engage with caution," the system advised.

Da took a measured breath. This wasn't the first time he had encountered elemental remnants; he had heard stories during his training sessions. Most of the time, they were benign, but some had a tendency to lash out or react defensively, especially when startled.

"Hey there, little guy," Da spoke softly, moving slowly to avoid alarming it. "I'm not here to hurt you." He crouched down, respecting the entity's space.

To his astonishment, the Ember Sprout perked up, glowing vibrantly as it leaped forward and circled him curiously. Da chuckled nervously, the creature's playful nature easing his tension.

"Is that... friendly?" he asked aloud, glancing toward the system.

"Ember Sprouts have been documented as curious but mischievous. If you can capture it, it can serve as a reactive component for fire-mechanisms," it explained, illuminating his options.

"Capture it?" Da felt a swell of excitement. "How do I do that?"

"Use charm and encourage its proximity. A collection device, if available, could also ensure ease of capture," the system suggested.

"I can work with that," Da said, racking his brain for ideas. "There's probably some old containment device around here somewhere...."

And while the glowing Ember danced around him, he felt a sense of newfound purpose swell within him—a testament to the potential that awaited as he collected the iron and ventured further into the unknown. With the Firestone in his possession and the promise of other resources to come, Da West took a step toward rekindling his dreams, one glowing ember at a time.
