Chapter 603 The Driven One
(From Blue's Perspective)
It had been years since I heard from Azure. Sometimes I saw him in my dreams, but that was nothing unusual. He was an object of a nightmare for me. Because of him, Reece was dead. Because of him, Ava was gone and Evelyn hated me. She hated how my kids got to grow up while she had no idea where her daughter was.
She absolutely hated it when Bree was born. She hated how I had a daughter when hers was missing.
I could not blame her for any of that. She blamed me and I understood her. Hell, even I blamed myself.
The moment Dion used the word 'possessed', I knew that Azure did it. What he was doing all these years, I had no idea. Sixteen years, to be exact. I had not heard even a word from him in sixteen years. Now, all of a sudden, he was back. I had been anticipating this for years.
Not even for a moment I stopping thinking about his return. I knew he would be back. And he would be back with much more preparation than before.
There was an unfinished game between us. I could not find Ava in sixteen years. It meant I lost the game. What would he do now? Take my children? Take Demian?
Dem wanted to come with me, but I sent him to make sure Bree was asleep. Knowing her, she clearly was awake to find out what was going on.
Demian was not there at the stairwell. I waited there with Calix, since Perita was off-duty for the night.
Calix was thirty-four now, older than me physically. Yet, when I looked at him, I still saw the sixteen-year-old boy who wanted to guard me.
"I don't know how my kids all turned out to be different from each other. Dion is always on time. Always. Sometimes I am late, but he is never late. Bree is late on purpose. She wants to make a grand entrance.
And then there is Demian. Always late. It's not even on purpose. He somehow manages to waste time even if he does everything accordingly."
Calix chuckled. He had a son too, so he understood my problem. He married his mate five years ago and had a four-year-old son.
"Then my son will be like Prince Demian. He has no idea what time means," he said.
"How is your son, by the way? He had pox, I heard," I asked.
"Yeah. It went away mostly. Just some scars left."
"Demian's ones never fully went away on their own. I had to use ointments for that," I said.
Finally after at least ten minutes, Demian arrived, yawning. His hair was tousled as if he did not bother to even comb it with his fingers. Knowing him, he surely did not bother.
"Seriously?" I crossed my arms.@@novelbin@@
"For the first time in like five years, I slept a little early. And tonight, of all these times, you had to call me," he said.
I fixed his hair as best as possible. "I didn't wake you to run around, Demian. We have work. Didn't you want to work with me?"
He was excited, I could tell, even though his expression did not change. He tried to act nonchalant, but I knew my son.
Demian had been pestering me about working with me. He wanted to help me with all the work. To be honest, a little help would not hurt. But the problem with Demian was that he made nasty comments at whoever pissed him off a bit. He once called the duke a nasty old man right to his face. I had to apologize on his behalf.
Demain was not like that all the time. Okay, maybe he was. But I believed it was just because he was bored. He was a prodigy. A problem with prodigies was that they got bored quickly because they mastered everything within a short while. Demian could play any musical instrument and knew more about some subjects than his peers.

Sometimes, even his tutors could not surpass him. So, I had to change his tutors frequently.
"Yeah, but you could have told me beforehand that we were working tonight," he said.
"Damn it, Demian. All of it happened suddenly, okay? Did Dion not tell you anything?"
"No."
"Okay, just come with me. I will tell you on the way."
I briefed the whole thing to Demian on the way. He did not comment on any part, just nodded along silently.
We reached the cell where Melissa was being kept. I stopped in front of it and turned to Demian.
"I need you to see if you can identify any black man and if you can, then how much. You need to observe and tell me what you think. Dion brought back the dead bodies of those five bandits. You will take a look at them too. Then, you will make a report," I said. "Alright?"
Demian almost beamed. He was happy that I gave him something important to do. He would have to use his head a little more than usual for this task.
I had faith in him. Besides, it was not like I would leave him alone. I would observe the whole thing to see if Demian's report was correct or not.
It might be surprising as to why I had not yet let Demian work with me even though I awakened his power. Well, to put it simply, I was afraid. He sometimes showed signs that I did not particularly like. I even had the notion that if Demian got mixed with the wrong company, he might end up doing something terrible. My son was ambitious. A little too ambitious.
He was driven by the needs to do things no one else could do. One problem with driven people was that they sometimes did not see right and wrong. Demian's version of right and wrong was quite twisted.
I had no delusion about any of my children. I loved them, but I also could see their faults and real personalities. Demian was driven and a little insane. He could do anything to prove himself to be powerful.
So, I had to be careful about giving him work to do. I could not just let him do anything. Till now, I was careful to not let him do anything that could lead him to Azure.
But now, he was sixteen. I could not stop him much longer even if I wanted to. That was why I decided to let him work with me while also supervising every step he took. I had to warn him while not stopping him from doing something he wanted to do. If even after all this he decided to do something terrible, it was his choice and I would have to make my choice as well.
What do you think?
