Chapter 82: Chapter 082: Wonder Woman
March 25, at 7:30 a.m. Opportunity City Memorial Cemetery.
Dark clouds swirled overhead, and the sky was somber. A fine drizzle ran down the car window, leaving tear streaks as if the entire city were weeping.
This was the largest cemetery in Opportunity City, not open to the public, and those buried here were retired or had died in the line of duty from the military and the Administration Bureau.
Countless soldiers considered it an honor to be buried in this cemetery after death, but most civil servants of the new era tried to avoid this issue as much as possible.
More than ten black Mercedes were parked along the roadside of the cemetery, and dozens of men and women dressed in black suits stood on an empty patch of ground, their expressions somber and the atmosphere oppressively heavy.
“All that silently passes by, this world will not end. Rest in peace, my love, your soul will continue. Your birth and your existence were only to pass on the verses of hope, forever. I dedicate these tears to you, a new language of love. We will be grateful for the days of dreams and happiness you have given us. Here, where I first met you, until eternity. I walked across that dimly lit lawn… I will not be afraid, for your soul is with me…”
The Priest, holding the Bible, stood in front of the grave, reading the eulogy, while workers carefully lowered a black lacquered coffin into the pit and covered it with the flag of the United Federation.
Diana, in all black, was silent as she dropped a white flower on the coffin lid, silently watching the workers fill the grave with soil.
That was Violet’s coffin.
When the building began to collapse and boulders fell from the sky, the P.W.A.T stationed on the 6th floor to guard the gate were evaporated in an instant by the intense Spiritual Energy explosion, and the members on the higher floors were killed on the spot.
In the lobby on the first floor, only two investigators survived; all other personnel perished, their deaths horrific.
Violet had her abdomen pierced by an unknown monster. Diana didn’t know how long she suffered before she died, but later learned from the mission report that Violet and her team had encountered a contract demon.
This incident was indeed related to the Blasphemous Dagger. Diana already knew the cause of the entire incident just by guessing: someone used the Blasphemous Dagger to actively open the gateway to the Great Void, but something unforeseen happened, preventing the contract from being completed…
Logically, this shouldn’t have happened. If the gate was opened, it meant that the contract had been carried out.
Could there be another possibility?
The contract was halfway executed when the soul meant to be sacrificed was taken back…
Diana shook her head. If there really was such a way, contract demons would be found all over the world by now, and the Administration Bureau was well aware of the Spiritual Businesses overstepping their boundaries.
Under a nearby tree, a middle-aged woman stood with a young girl, quietly looking at another coffin waiting to be buried.
That was Mrs. Morgan and her daughter.
Diana approached, trying to offer some comfort to the mother and daughter.
“Mrs. Morgan?” Diana said softly.
“Hello, I’m sorry, but I am not quite in the state to talk right now,” Mrs. Morgan replied.
Diana could see she was a strong-willed woman, but no matter how composed she appeared, she couldn’t hide her slightly swollen eyes and the tear streaks on her face.
“I’m Diana, from the CPA, not in the same department as Morgan, but still comrade-in-arms. We are all very sorry about what happened to him,” Diana said.
“Morgan wasn’t easy to get along with, but he was a good man…” Mrs. Morgan sighed.
“Yes… we know, God will watch over him…” Diana agreed.
“Why didn’t you save him?” Suddenly, Morgan’s young daughter interjected.
“Oona… I’m sorry, she’s still young,” Mrs. Morgan said, pressing Oona’s shoulders apologetically, looking at Diana.
“It’s okay… I understand how she feels right now,” Diana smiled, squatting down to Oona’s level.
The little girl’s eyes were as stubborn and unyielding as Morgan’s, her cherubic face flushed red, choking back a sentiment of dissatisfaction and resentment as she stared at Diana.
“Why didn’t you save him?” Oona asked again.
“I couldn’t save him at the time… I’m sorry,” Diana apologized.
“You’re Wonder Woman, you must have had a way! Why didn’t you save my dad?” Oona said, tears rolling uncontrollably in her eyes, still clutching a Wonder Woman doll in her hand.
“There’s no Wonder Woman in this world… Oona. We’re very sorry about your dad…” Diana said gently, who was just a comic book character, whereas she was just an ordinary person who had to inject and withdraw Spiritual Energy every month.
“I’m sorry, Diana… Oona is just too upset,” Mrs. Morgan said as she hugged Oona, her mood somewhat downcast.
“You don’t need to apologize, Mrs. Morgan… It’s no one’s fault…” Diana shook her head.
“Dad lied to me… He said he knew Wonder Woman… He was always lying to me,” Oona said as she threw the Wonder Woman doll on the ground and embraced her mother.
Mrs. Morgan helplessly shook her head, wrapping her arms around Oona and slowly walking away.
Diana squatted on the ground, picking up the Wonder Woman doll that Oona had dropped.
“Peace and freedom are not achievements but responsibilities. They come at a great cost, but I am willing to pay that price, even if I’m the only one, that’s still better than nobody.”
After the coffins were all buried, CPA Director Steve Rogers stood at the temporary podium on behalf of the Administration Bureau and delivered a speech, with the authorities from CPA and the families of the deceased gathered solemnly in front of the podium, listening intently.
“However, fortunately, even in this age where incomprehensible things are becoming rampant, we are not alone. Countless heroes have succeeded one another, wielding powers far beyond ordinary people, fighting selflessly for the well-being of everyone else in this world.”
“Our sacrifices will yield peace for everyone in the world so that they won’t need to sit around a small campfire, afraid of what they do not understand.”
“No one wants to live in the fear of the unknown, but those unexplainable things have never truly left our sight. If God does not heed our calls, then it is up to us to stand up.”
“Letting others live ordinary and normal lives is our duty, even if such life requires the exchange of our own lives, which we are willing to do.”
“They will not have sacrificed in vain; we will not forget them, for they are the guardians of human history. Rest in peace, may you have a smooth journey.”
Steve Rogers concluded and looked up.
“May you have a smooth journey,” the agents of the CPA also said.
After the ceremony was over, people began to leave in groups. Steve Rogers and Diana met at the entrance to the cemetery.
“I can tell you’re under a lot of pressure,” Steve Rogers asked with concern.
“If I hadn’t gone to drain it the day before yesterday, it should have been me who died…” Diana said softly.
“Don’t think like that; it’s no one’s fault. We all know the risks we take facing these things,” Steve Rogers said.
“I’m sorry… but I feel like I haven’t done enough,” Diana shook her head.
“Then don’t apologize, just strive to do better, but don’t be too hard on yourself,” Steve Rogers said.
“Thank you, Rogers, I feel much better,” Diana smiled and nodded.
“Can I take you home?” Steve Rogers asked.
“No thanks, I drove,” Diana said.
After bidding each other farewell, Diana got into her red muscle car. She pulled out the Wonder Woman toy, looked at it for a long time, twisted it into a sitting position, and placed it in front of the windshield.
What do you think?
