Chapter 92: Chapter 092 Secret Port
I had thought it was Hall, but the person who pushed the door open was a security guard.
He was looking down, fishing a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, and as he put one between his lips and was about to light it, he looked up to see the pitch-dark, terrifying corpse in the room, and the silent Chen Ke staring right at him.
The two locked gazes for a few seconds, thoughts racing through both their minds.
The cigarette fell to the ground, and the guard immediately reached for the gun on his belt.
However, Chen Ke wasn’t about to give him the chance. He raised his hand and fired two shots into the guard’s chest, the .45 ACP bullets tearing through his flesh, tumbling inside and creating a horrific cavity effect.
The guard clutched his chest, staggering backward as Chen Ke stepped forward and fired another round into his forehead, blowing off half of his skullcap.
He grabbed the guard’s right arm and gently laid him down on the ground. The bullets did not exit the body; aside from the mechanical cycling of the firearm’s slide and the noise of the suppressor, there was no other sound.
But Chen Ke still ran to the blinds, pried them slightly apart, and anxiously looked outside.
Most Hollywood movies mythologize the function of gun suppressors, as if attaching this magical accessory silences a gun completely.
That’s simply not possible.
The main purpose of a suppressor is not to completely eliminate sound but to prevent the muzzle flash from obstructing the shooter’s view and reduce the noise to protect the shooter’s hearing.
The mechanical noise of the slide cycling after firing a weapon cannot be silenced by a suppressor, and depending on the caliber of the firearm and the amount of powder in the cartridge, the reduction of sound is quite limited.
The three shots Chen Ke had just fired were about as loud as an adult sneezing three times, perhaps even louder.
It was just his good luck that the dock was deserted and there was no one else around the building.
All was as quiet as usual, and Chen Ke breathed a sigh of relief.
Now, he had time to take a good look at the man’s corpse. The man had turned into a “Black Person” at a speed like that of a virus outbreak, which was of great concern to Chen Ke.
The information box showed that the man had undergone a mutation just before dying. Was that the instant of Spiritual Energy infection? No time to catch his breath? It happened in the blink of an eye?
Furthermore, from the attribute type, it appeared the man was infected with Sin witchcraft-type Spiritual Energy…
Something was not right. Chen Ke didn’t believe the man’s transformation was a coincidence; it was more like some sort of triggerable condition…
Chen Ke stroked his chin, feeling that although this inference had no basis, it wasn’t too far-fetched.
Spiritual Energy was divided into six categories with eighteen attributes, the kind of intelligence that one couldn’t Google. As it stands, each category of Spiritual Energy should have three attributes.
Chen Ke had limited knowledge of the attributes and categories, but he had learned quite a few already: Punishment, Flame, acid, toxin, Magic, Illusion Technique… and Justice… some kind of
If he remembered correctly, this was the first time Chen Ke had encountered an attribute of the Sin category.
Witchcraft!
That certainly sounded sinful enough. Could the man have been struck with some kind of Secret Keeping Witchcraft that, upon disclosing what should not be disclosed, would trigger the witchcraft’s effect…
It wasn’t an impossibility.
If witchcraft exists, maybe there are wizards in this world too…
“A127, what’s happened? Please respond.”
Just as Chen Ke stood observing the corpse and pondering, the guard’s walkie-talkie suddenly chirped to life.
Chen Ke looked at the walkie-talkie with a complacent expression, momentarily unsure of what to say.
“A127, what’s happened? Do we need to send someone to your position?”
The voice from the walkie-talkie grew anxious.
Then the door was pushed open again, and a man rushed in. Chen Ke instantly pointed his gun at the man, only to recognize that it was Hall.
“A127! A127, please report your situation immediately.”
The urgent voice came from the walkie-talkie on the ground.
Hall sprinted over to the security guard’s body and grabbed the walkie-talkie.
“This is A127, uh… no situation here, just dropped my cigarette,” said Hall, pinching his nose.
“Alright, remember to report on time,” the response came through the walkie-talkie.
Hall turned off the walkie-talkie and looked at Chen Ke with a sigh of relief.
“Holy shit, there’s a way to do that?!” Chen Ke exclaimed.
“Do not kill security unless absolutely necessary. If you kill too many, they’ll get suspicious. If you must kill, you need to respond to their radio checks quickly,” Hall instructed.
“Got it…” Chen Ke nodded.
“But speaking of which, did you find anything—weird… Holy fuck!” Hall was interrupted mid-sentence when he saw the dark corpse behind Chen Ke, startling him into yelling.
“Keep it down!” Chen Ke gestured for silence.
“Damn it, what is that, Chen Ke? Did you do that?” Hall asked in a lowered voice.
“I can’t explain it either; he was alive just a moment ago…” Chen Ke said.
Hall kept a certain distance from the corpse, observing it carefully from afar.
Had it not been for Chen Ke’s own eyes, he would have been just as surprised as Hall.
“Did you find anything useful on him?” Hall asked while inspecting the body.
“Corporation,” replied Chen Ke.
Hall turned back to look at Chen Ke.
“Corporation?”
“Yes, a corporation. It seems like a secret society formed by a bunch of Spiritual Businesses, an underground interest group. I don’t know what they’re after, but it’s definitely nothing good,” said Chen Ke.
“We never knew these Spiritual Businesses had such a society… Looks like we need to update our own intelligence network,” Lucina’s voice came through the earpiece.
“It doesn’t matter what they want to do; it’s none of our business,” declared Priskin.
“No, Pihom should know about this; he will make a judgment. If the corporation is targeting relic thieves like us…” Hall shook his head.
“I’m only concerned with how many Spiritual Businesses have joined this ‘corporation’…” said Chen Ke.
He was particularly interested in whether Si’s consortium was part of this “corporation.”
“Rich people always like to band together. Trust me, Chen Ke, there definitely won’t be a few,” Hall said.
Chen Ke nodded, not yet revealing the ‘corporation’s’ goal to create gods, as he himself hadn’t fully understood what that man had meant.
“Check the computer data; if you find anything useful, copy it to a USB drive…” Chen Ke said.
Hall pulled out a small USB drive from his pocket and quickly went to the computer to start working. At this critical moment, Chen Ke took out his phone and snapped several photos of the dark corpse.
He was very concerned about the man’s changes before death, the bulging veins, the blackening blood, the bleeding from every orifice… Such cruel witchcraft…
After Hall was busy for a while, Chen Ke didn’t know what exactly he had copied, but anyway, everything seemed to be done.
“Lucina, we’re pulling out,” Hall said.
“Okay, the van is across the street, you guys exit the same way you… wait!” Lucina was halfway through when she suddenly changed her mind.
“What’s wrong, Lucina?” Chen Ke asked.
“I don’t know, but six cars are moving into the harbor… one stretch limousine and the rest are heavy-duty SUVs…” Lucina informed.
Chen Ke leaned against the window, pried open the blinds and looked into the square, seeing several black cars slowly entering the harbor gate.
“It seems that there are more secrets hidden here than expected…” Chen Ke mused.
What do you think?
