Vol. 1 - Chapter 241 - Performance
HuMing never asked about that person’s final fate, but he was certain that given Gu WeiJun’s nature, he wouldn’t let the Zhou family off so easily. Whether or not the Zhou family was truly responsible for the incident, though, was another matter entirely.
Who knew if there was someone else pulling the strings behind the scenes?
But HuMing wasn’t particularly concerned. This situation didn’t involve him too much—if anything, it was merely a test from the other party.
And his response was a warning in return, a reminder to those lurking in the shadows to tread carefully.
"HuMing, get some rest tonight. Tomorrow at lunch, I’ll introduce you to the family."
Gu WeiJun reached out and patted HuMing’s shoulder, his demeanor showing no trace of distance between them.
To Gu WeiJun, the Gu bloodline was paramount. Especially after he had cleared out many of his uncles, the number of direct family members had dwindled.
Now, with HuMing returning to the Gu family—and proving that he wasn’t just some clueless outsider—it left Gu WeiJun quite satisfied.
HuMing nodded and turned his gaze toward the setting sun in the distance, lost in thought.
It had been days since he last contacted anyone outside. When he finally got his phone back, the sheer number of messages caused it to freeze for a moment.
Before heading into the trial, HuMing had informed those around him that he would be off the grid for a week. He had an important trial to complete.
So he wasn’t too worried about anyone bombarding him with messages.
And even if they had, Kang Xin would have handled it.
Returning to his rented apartment, HuMing opened the door—only to see Kang Xin standing at the entrance, as if she had been waiting for quite some time.
She studied him closely. After a week apart, she could tell that his skin had darkened noticeably under the sun.
Other than that, there didn’t seem to be much change.
"I’m back!"
HuMing flopped onto the couch, stretching his limbs lazily.
Kang Xin, still watching him, soon asked, "Nothing too unusual happened this past week, right?"
"There was. Someone tried to assassinate me, but I found them first. Whatever happens next is up to the Gu family—I don’t really care. After all, tomorrow, I’ll finally get to see who’s been living my life in my place."
"Do you need me to come with you tomorrow?"
"Yeah, stick with me. As for Lan Jun, just have him wait downstairs. I have no idea what the old man is planning, and since Lan Jun is technically his man, it's better to be cautious."
When it came to the old man, HuMing found himself unable to get a clear read.
Why hadn’t he come for him immediately? Instead, he had used such an indirect method to bring him back into the Gu family.
And why hadn’t he simply told him the full truth, instead making him dig for it on his own?
It was like he had deliberately left a pit for HuMing to fall into.
But HuMing wasn’t too concerned. Now that he knew his family was the Gu family, he could start piecing everything together.
"Alright."
Kang Xin understood his meaning. She nodded and left.
Lying on the couch, HuMing pulled out his phone and skimmed through the messages. Most of them were just people checking in on him.
Ye QiuXue had asked where he was. Instead of answering, HuMing told her to guess.
Infuriated, she immediately sent back a single smiling emoji.
【Say it or don’t. I’m going to sleep!】
Seeing her message, HuMing couldn’t help but chuckle.
Meanwhile, Xia XiaoXi had messaged him about Han YunXi.
She mentioned that while she would be returning to the capital soon, she and Han YunXi had grown quite close in the meantime.
Their families also supported her deepening ties with the Han family.
Naturally, neither of them brought up a certain someone.
HuMing locked his phone screen and gazed at the towering buildings outside.
Memories surfaced, as if the past was replaying before his eyes.
…
"You never told me HuMing was coming to the Gu family! How did he find out?"
Gu ZhaoChuan’s brows furrowed deeply, his expression dark and stormy.
Phone in hand, he was speaking to someone on the other end of the line.
The moment he heard that HuMing had returned to the Gu family, he couldn’t sit still.
Lately, he had been too preoccupied with school to worry about HuMing, and he had assumed there was no way HuMing would ever track down the Gu family. That thought had given him peace of mind.
Yet, the moment he returned home, his father casually mentioned that they had a new family member—someone named HuMing.
The name alone had sent a cold sweat down his back.
The second he got to his room, he had frantically called someone.
Unlike Gu ZhaoChuan’s urgency, the voice on the other end remained calm.
"Don’t panic. Didn’t your father say he returned as Second old Master Gu’s grandson? That has nothing to do with you. Even if he investigates, it won’t lead back to you."
"Then how did he figure out the connection between the necklace and the Gu family?"
"Your grandfather, of course. You know how long he’s been searching for his brother. That necklace just happened to be the clue he was looking for—this was all just coincidence."
"Coincidence? Coincidence?! Do you really think things are that simple? HuMing isn’t some fool like Han ShuYi! He killed someone I’ve raised for years! Do you know what that means? It’s like losing an arm!"
"I can find you new people. What you need to do now is get close to HuMing. Gain his trust."
Gu ZhaoChuan took a deep breath, his gaze shifting to the framed photo on his desk.
If things had gone differently, it would have been HuMing in that picture.
Yet the one living as "HuMing" now was him.
There was no way he would give it all up.
"I understand. I’ll do as you say."
"Good. That’s what it means to be an heir of the Gu family. Only by doing this will you have a chance to eliminate HuMing. Get some rest—you have quite the performance to put on tomorrow."
The call ended.
Gu ZhaoChuan tightened his grip around the phone, his eyes locking onto the darkness outside the window.
Just then, a woman’s voice called from outside his door.
"ZhaoChuan, are you still awake?"
"Not yet, Mom. What’s wrong?"
Gu ZhaoChuan quickly composed himself and opened the door. Standing there was a well-maintained woman, holding a few finely crafted garments, her expression conflicted.
"ZhaoChuan, help me out—what kind of clothes do young men like these days?"
"Mom, I have plenty of clothes. I don’t need any more." Gu ZhaoChuan forced a troubled smile.
His mother, however, patted his arm and smiled.
"These aren’t for you. They’re for HuMing. It’s his first time coming to our home, so I want to pick something nice for him as a gift!"
Gu ZhaoChuan’s smile froze.
What do you think?
