Chapter 1109: Collecting Evidence

“Director Li, as the head of this orphanage, you should care for the children here. It’s freezing, and everyone is shivering in thin shirts, barely able to eat or sleep. Meanwhile, you’re cozy by the stove, watching TV. This is negligence!” Gu Yang’s young voice rang out, stern and full of righteousness.
Director Li was momentarily stunned, surprised that such a little kid could speak so logically. But the surprise quickly faded, and he didn’t take her seriously at all.
He sneered arrogantly, “So what? Get lost, or I won’t even let you eat!”
Gu Yang’s face darkened. “You don’t give us food—the country does! The money for this orphanage doesn’t belong to you. It’s from the government, for us! And now, you’re pocketing it instead of buying us clothes?”
Director Li laughed mockingly. “Oh, you think you can lecture me just because you’ve picked up a few fancy words from TV? Listen, kid, I’m the boss here. This orphanage, the money, it’s all under my control. So what if I take some for myself? What are you going to do about it? Bite me!”
With a smirk, he gave her a hard shove and slammed the door shut.
Gu Yang, still a child, couldn’t match the strength of the middle-aged man. She stumbled back a few steps but caught her balance in the cold wind.
She glanced back at the closed door, her expression calm. Turning away, she pulled an old phone from her pocket.
She saved the recording.
The recording is one of the evidence allowed by law.
However, the recording alone wasn’t enough. As a child in the eyes of outsiders, her words held little weight. She needed more evidence and someone to help her report the situation.
Only then could they thoroughly investigate Director Li and rid the orphanage of its corruption!
Outside, the cold air hit her, and the playground, usually bustling with laughter, felt desolate. Gu Yang wore just a thin shirt and a light jacket, and her weak body made her worry about catching a cold. She hurried back to the dormitory building.
To her surprise, she didn’t feel as cold as she expected.
The orphanage had only one dormitory building with three floors: the first floor for boys and the second for girls. Unfortunately, many families preferred boys over girls. Some families, desperate for sons, gave birth to several daughters and, unable to care for them, abandoned them at the orphanage’s entrance. As a result, the orphanage had a larger proportion of girls.
As Gu Yang climbed the stairs, she passed Feng Jue’s dormitory and decided to check on him.
When she pushed the door open, she was greeted by the sound of coughing.
“Sister, don’t come in! You might catch what I have,” Feng Jue warned, his voice slightly nasal from the cold.
Gu Yang looked at Feng Jue, then shifted her gaze to the other three children in the room. Two of them had snot running down their noses, while another curled up in bed, coughing softly.
Alright, everyone had caught a cold.
It should be a cold caused by the cold.@@novelbin@@
Children’s resistance was low to begin with. Now that they were not wearing warm clothes or sleeping warm, it was very easy for them to catch a cold.
“It’s okay. I’m very resistant.”
Gu Yang walked over to Feng Jue’s bedside and stretched out her chubby fingers to touch his forehead. Without a thermometer, she relied on this primitive method to check for a fever.
Having just come in from the cold, her hands were chilly. When she touched Feng Jue’s forehead, the stark temperature difference made her feel the heat radiating from him. Unsure how to interpret it, she asked, “Ah Jue, how are you feeling? Do you feel dizzy? Does anything hurt?”
Feng Jue shook his head. Just as he opened his mouth to respond, an itch in his throat compelled him to turn away and cough a few times, hiding it from Gu Yang.
“I’m fine, Sister,” he replied in a tone that suggested this was a familiar routine. “I’ll be better in a few days.”
It was clear this wasn’t the first time he had endured a cold. The same went for the other three children in the dormitory.
With no medicine available, Gu Yang thought for a moment before dashing to the kitchen. She borrowed a thermos from the canteen auntie and filled it with boiling water to bring back for them. “Drink more water,” she urged as she handed it over.
What do you think?
