Gu Yang filled Feng Jue’s enamel cup with hot water and placed it on his thin blanket, allowing him to cover it with the fabric to keep it warm.
“Drink more water,” she reminded him. “I’ll come back to check on you later.”
Feng Jue cradled the warm cup in both hands and nodded at Gu Yang, feeling grateful. This cold winter didn’t seem so unbearable anymore.
She moved on to remind the other children one by one.
Feng Jue thought that if he were the only one with a cold, then the warmth from his sister would be his alone to enjoy.
The two younger children, with snot running from their noses, listened intently. When Gu Yang spoke seriously to them, they nodded obediently.
The child lying on the bed appeared to be a bit older than Feng Jue, around nine or ten years old. He curled up under the blankets, trembling with each cough, seeming not to hear Gu Yang clearly as she spoke to him.@@novelbin@@
Noticing something was off, Gu Yang frowned and reached out to touch his forehead. It felt burning hot.
She compared it to her own forehead; it was indeed much warmer. She guessed his temperature might be one or two degrees higher!
She reached out and nudged him. “How are you? Does your head hurt? Are you dizzy?”
The boy lying on the bed was dazed and found her touch and childish voice annoying. He turned away and shoved her back. “Go away,” he croaked.
Gu Yang was caught off guard and stumbled to the ground.
Feng Jue frowned, his expression darkening. He carefully placed the enamel cup filled with hot water down before getting off the bed and walking over to Gu Yang to help her up.
“Sister, are you alright?”
Gu Yang shook her head and glanced at the boy on the bed. “He has a high fever.”
If he had a fever, then so be it; he could just burn himself to death. Feng Jue thought to himself, but he knew his sister was kind and wouldn’t appreciate hearing that.
“Sister, you care about him, but he treats you like this and even pushes you to the ground. Unlike me, who only cares about you,” Feng Jue said.
Gu Yang raised an eyebrow, taken aback.
Was this child being a bit pretentious?
She looked into Feng Jue’s clear eyes and realized he genuinely believed that. It was just a child’s innocent heart. How could it be pretentious?
She smiled and coaxed him, “I know you’re the most obedient. He’s just sick and dizzy. When he feels better, he won’t act like this anymore.”
In any case, he was still young. Even if he went astray, he could still find his way back.
Feng Jue snorted, “It’s good that you know…”
He chose to focus solely on the praise.
Gu Yang learned from Feng Jue that the boy with the fever was named Shadow.
When he was very young, his parents died in a car accident. After his grandparents, who raised him, passed away, he lost his guardians and ended up in the orphanage.
Two years ago, Shadow was adopted by a couple who had struggled with infertility for years. But after a year in their home, the couple became pregnant with their own child.
Initially, they intended to raise Shadow as their own, hoping he would carry on the family line. However, with a biological son on the way, Shadow’s presence became awkward.
He was sent back to the orphanage, with the couple claiming he was a bad child who was jealous and wanted to cause his adoptive mother to miscarry.
Director Li of the orphanage punished Shadow harshly, insisting he needed to learn a lesson.
Now, Shadow was an orphan once again, often mocked and scolded by the other children. He had become known as a “bad child” in everyone’s eyes.
What do you think?
