Chapter 31: Sweetness of Success

"Player Sylvia,

"Yes, Mage Roman."

"Come here to the stage and calculate the value of the constant k. Also, when Mage Alice is facing a Wyvern, how strong is her protective shield?"

It wasn’t an easy question, and many players, including those three delinquent girls, had already failed to answer it.

[A/N: The whole Q&A is in the paragraph comment.]

Because of this, everyone anticipated that Sylvia would start making a fool of herself as soon as she was called down on stage.

Nobody expected anything of her.

Some were laughing at her, expecting another entertaining scene, while others were trying to figure out the answer on their own in preparation for being called.

But...

Everybody questioned whether their eyes were tricking them after a minute had passed.

It was because there was no sign of hesitation, trepidation, or fear on Sylvia’s face.

Instead, she was full of confidence.

Her hand that held the marker was constantly moving, and she was continuously doing calculations on the white board.

Two minutes passed like that.

At that precise moment, Sylvia spoke up, and her voice reverberated throughout the hall.

"K is 8, and the Mage Alice’s protective shield generates 10 units of strength when facing the Wyvern at a distance of 50 meters."

""...""

Silence fell in the first auditorium.

And it wasn’t until Roman broke the silence that everyone came out of their trance.

"Correct answer, Player Sylvia, keep up the good work."

"Thank you, Mage Roman."

With barely contained excitement, Sylvia bowed gracefully.

The other players looked at her in disbelief as she returned to her seat.

This also included those three delinquent girls who were gritting their teeth.

"Am I seeing it right? Wasn’t she the worst there ever was?"

Someone near me spoke up, and the other players around him nodded in agreement.

No one could believe their eyes.

"Maybe it’s just a lucky coincidence."

"I think it was Adrian who helped her and told her the solution beforehand."

Eventually, they came to this conclusion to explain the situation.

"Thank you Adrian."

Sylvia came back, sat next to me, and thanked me for calming and encouraging her earlier.

However, when players seated nearby heard such a sentence, it sent a completely different message to them.

"As expected, it was because of Adrian’s help."

"I knew it, or how could a loser like her solve it?"

Not just me, but Sylvia also heard them.

Her smile receded, but feeling my hand on hers, she chose to ignore them and focus on the class.

Time went by, and no matter what Roman asked Sylvia, she always gave the right answer and did it faster than the other players.

No one could understand why this happened.

Everyone wanted to know, how and why a loser bitch like Sylvia could become a topper all of a sudden.

But it didn’t take them long to analyze it and come to their own conclusion.

They had seen me whisper to Sylvia before she went on stage, and Sylvia thanked me when she got back.

Soon, they understood everything.

The reason Sylvia was able to change.

The eyes that were staring at me shifted suddenly.

If they were once filled with envy, rage, or admiration.

They were now filled with a sense of desire, interest, rage, awe, and surprise.

Everything was in my field of vision and sensation.

But I did nothing, and when the day was over, I simply returned with Sylvia as usual.

After sending Sylvia to her hotel, Charlotte handed me the file I ordered in the morning.

"How come it’s so fast?"

Curious, I asked, though my focus was on the contents of the file.

While driving, Charlotte nodded as though anticipating my question.

"I know Master, but even I was surprised by Sharon’s speed of doing things."

"It looks like she’s in contact with my father."

"Master, why did the Patriarch help Sharon?"

"He must be eager to see me after hearing the rumors... Anyway, so it’s about 4 days later?"

I spoke, changing the subject and putting the file away.

"Yes Master."

Charlotte also didn’t continue and just nodded with delight.

"Just the perfect timing."

"It would be fun."

"Indeed..."

Our eyes met, and we instantly understood each other.

"Hehehe, Master, I am liking you more and more."

Before I could respond, Charlotte grinned and launched the car off like a rocket.

The next day.

"Correct again Player Sylvia, it looks like you’re finally focusing on Magic instead of useless things."

Roman’s remarks were unfiltered and, in a sense, sarcastic, but Sylvia only cheerfully responded to him in an unaffected manner.

"Yes, thank you Mage Roman."

The situation was identical to yesterday’s.

Sylvia maintained her exceptional performance and continued to impress Roman.

Because I didn’t step in, Sylvia started flying around as if she had wings she hadn’t been able to use before.

Perhaps as a result of how well it turned out for her, Sylvia regained her confidence.

From the beginning, I knew she would be successful the moment she was let go.

Of course, even in that condition, Sylvia would obey my commands and become a good girlfriend.

It was because every woman wants a prince charming, and as the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

When everyone else turned her down, I was the only one who reached out to her.

But if I really wanted just that, I wouldn’t have started out by creating such a troublesome situation.

I couldn’t let it turn out that way.

That was detrimental to my future plans.

Therefore, I planned this whole scenario.

In order to give her cause for optimism.

Sylvia was the Heroine, and that too with an overpowered Class like the Archmage.

Even though she was only on Level 1, these questions asked by Roman were child’s play for her.

Therefore, it was natural for Sylvia to correctly answer them if I didn’t use my skills Intimidation or Stealth to disrupt her mentality.

This was all allowed by me in order for her to gain confidence in herself.

Allow her to convince herself that she was talented and could achieve greater heights.

’Because the higher she goes, the more painful and impactful her fall will be.’

Only by tasting the success would she discover its sweetness.

Which would ultimately help me achieve my goal of getting her to understand that I was the only one who could provide this sweetness to her.

That everything she could do was because of me.

Without me, she was nothing, she had nothing.

That was why, I encouraged her, and let her enjoy the services of a five star hotel.

It was another sweetness that improved her mood and mental state.

Making her addicted to it.

It was then...

"Adrian, can I also sit beside you, if you don’t mind?"

The question from the stunning woman with orange hair snapped me out of my reverie.

Nonetheless, my expression remained unchanged, and I replied with my usual pride.

"Why would I? We are all fellow Magic Tower players and apprentices, take a seat."

"Adrian, do you know the answer to this one?"

This time, it was a black-haired beauty who placed her tablet in front of me while cutely blinking her big black eyes.

There were a lot of girls and even a few boys sitting around me.

Either because I came from the Vaiself family, was attractive, and excelled on the entrance exams, or because Sylvia had become better because of me.

They all wanted to get closer to me and gain my favor.

Previously, nobody could approach me because of my Intimidation, Nobility, and aloofness.

However, today, everyone was surprised to discover that, although I was still that noble, handsome, and proud man, they felt no fear approaching me.

Subsequently, players gathered around me one by one, and this scene was created.

Everything was going as planned, and when I saw Sylvia next to me watching this scene with deteriorating facial expressions, I knew it was time to push her down.

Thus, Sylvia’s time in the spotlight finally came to an end on the third day.

*

"Sylvia gave the wrong answer. Shivani’s answer is the right one."

When Roman’s voice rang through the Auditorium, Sylvia’s body shook in disbelief.

The ground seemed to had moved beneath her feet, and she stumbled subconsciously.

Her eyes were vacant as she lowered her head, unable to make sense of the circumstances.

It was a question Sylvia had previously answered correctly.

She also knew the method and formula.

Not to mention, that girl, Shivani, wasn’t even good at Magical calculations.

Then how could Shivani be correct and Sylvia herself be wrong?

With just a glance at Sylvia, I could understand what was going on in her head.

Unfortunately for her, this was just the beginning.

My face turned to the two girls coming back, and I spoke up.

"Great job, Shivani." Then, turning my head, I said, "Better luck next time, Sylvia."

Priority to Shivani was intentionally given by me, and as expected, it immediately hit Sylvia at the correct spot.

My words brought Sylvia out of her trance.

She came to her senses and raised her head.

Her pupils were trembling.

It finally dawned on her that her position had been shifted down to the second.

Despite her best efforts, she was even unable to fake a smile.

This time there was no pride on her face, and her crumbling expressions were visible outside.

’Did you feel as if acid was injected into your heart?’

Looking at her world crumbling and her heart burning with acid gave me a strange sense of satisfaction.

And a sincere, heartfelt prayer for her arose in my heart.

’Don’t crumble so soon, my Sylvia, this is just the beginning, hehehe.’
