Chapter 488: Sixth Floor: The Chamber of Seven Seas (9)
But the next Crab Man wasn't so easily deterred. It charged, swinging its massive claws with deadly precision. Sylus raised his staff defensively, creating a thick wall of ice to intercept the strike. The Crab Man's claws collided with the ice, cracking the surface, but Sylus was ready. He summoned a burst of freezing energy, sending a spray of sharp ice shards into the creature's exposed body. The Crab Man howled in pain, retreating momentarily as Sylus advanced, summoning pillars of ice from the water below, trapping the creature and limiting its movement.
Two more Fishmen surrounded him, their weapons glinting in the dim light. Sylus kept his focus, his staff glowing with a cold aura as he froze the water between them, sending a spear of ice shooting out in rapid succession. The Fishmen attempted to dodge, but Sylus' attacks were too fast, and they were pierced by the sharp spears, their bodies freezing instantly as the water around them solidified.
Cyrus' muscles rippled with raw power as he charged into the fray. A massive Crab Man rushed at him, its enormous claws snapping through the water. Cyrus met the attack head-on, his forearms locking against the creature's claws. With a roar, he twisted his body, using the Crab Man's momentum against it, throwing the creature sideways into a rock formation. The Crab Man's shell cracked, but it wasn't done yet. As it attempted to right itself, Cyrus unleashed a devastating tail strike, smashing into its side with the force of a tidal wave, shattering the remaining shell and sending the Crab Man flying.
Cyrus' eyes darted to the Fishmen coming from his left. They were using the water to their advantage, weaving through it with terrifying speed. One swung a trident at him, aiming for his chest. Cyrus ducked under the strike, his claws coming up to catch the trident's shaft in mid-air, pulling the weapon out of the Fishman's hands. He swung his tail around to knock the creature off-balance, sending it crashing into another Fishman. With their attacks disrupted, Cyrus grabbed the nearest Fishman by its eel-like tendrils, lifting it into the air and slamming it into the rocky floor with brutal force.
But the tide was not yet in their favor. Another Fishman, this one larger and with a glowing, bio-luminescent body, swung a massive anchor at Cyrus. The anchor struck his side, but Cyrus, unfazed, grinned. His Leviathan blood boiled, and with a quick riposte, he sliced through the air with his claws, cutting clean through the anchor chain. He followed up with a series of rapid punches, each one smashing into the Fishman's face with the sound of cracking bone. Finally, with a mighty roar, he delivered a final punch that sent the Fishman flying backward, its body sinking into the depths.
As the fight escalated, the trio's coordination became more precise. Jesua used her agility to draw enemies away from the group, forcing them into Sylus' traps. Sylus' mastery of the water allowed him to manipulate the battlefield, freezing and trapping foes with well-placed ice walls and projectiles. Meanwhile, Cyrus used his brute strength to keep the enemies on the defensive, his tail and claws creating constant pressure on any monster foolish enough to get too close.
Jesua glanced over at Sylus. "We need to push forward—don't let them regroup."
Sylus nodded, raising his staff and sending a wave of frozen water surging toward a group of Fishmen. "We'll keep them contained. Just don't let them get too close."
Cyrus, grinning, cracked his knuckles. "No one gets past me."
The trio pressed forward, relentlessly advancing on the Crab Men and Fishmen, their combined efforts driving the enemies back. With every swing of their weapons and blast of magic, they pushed the creatures toward the sand, slowly gaining the upper hand.
But as the creatures continued to transform and adapt, the trio knew they couldn't afford to relax. The next wave would be even stronger, and their strategy would have to evolve with every step they took.
The water around the trio seemed to darken as the Abyssal Wraiths entered the fray, their translucent, glowing forms drifting like ghostly predators. Long tendrils extended from their jellyfish-like bodies, shimmering faintly before snapping forward with sudden, deadly intent. The chaotic battlefield now swirled with the crab men's brute force, the fishmen's cunning strikes, and the eerie, otherworldly presence of the wraiths.
Cyrus stepped forward instinctively, his leviathan blood stirring as he extended his senses through the water. His trident glowed faintly, vibrating with power as he spun it in tight arcs, deflecting two incoming tendrils. A quick jab forward severed one glowing appendage, but the wraith retracted the others with a hiss, retreating into the shadows of the ruins.
Sylus, positioned to Cyrus's left, immediately conjured an icy barrier as a crab man lunged toward him, water swirling violently around the creature's massive claw. The claw struck the barrier with a loud crack, sending jagged fractures through the ice. Sylus reacted instantly, dropping low and thrusting his staff upward to shatter the weakened claw with a precise blast of freezing magic. He followed up with a sweeping kick, taking advantage of the crab man's disorientation to knock it off balance.
Meanwhile, Jesua darted through the water with supernatural agility, her dual blades cutting glowing arcs through the gloom. She ducked under the swing of a fishman's coral-encrusted mace and drove one of her blades upward into its ribcage, twisting it with a sharp flick of her wrist. As another fishman surged toward her from behind, Jesua pushed off the seabed with both feet, flipping backward and slashing downward in midair. Her blade met the fishman's spear mid-thrust, redirecting it and leaving her free to counter with a spinning strike to its side.
The Abyssal Wraiths weren't idle. Two of them hovered near Cyrus, their glowing tendrils weaving through the water in hypnotic patterns. One lashed out, aiming for his leg, while the other arced around to strike from behind. Cyrus twisted his body, using the weightlessness of the water to spin fluidly. His trident swept downward, deflecting the frontal attack, while his tail lashed out with a powerful strike that sent the second wraith spiraling backward.
Sylus, noticing the wraiths' strategy of dividing their attention, focused his magic to create a chilling pulse that radiated outward, slowing the movement of all enemies within its radius. The crab men and fishmen hesitated as ice crystals formed on their limbs, but the wraiths countered with bursts of energy that cracked the frost. Sylus adjusted, conjuring spears of ice and launching them in rapid succession, forcing the enemies to scatter.
Jesua capitalized on the brief reprieve, moving in to support Cyrus. She plunged her blades into the sand and vaulted upward, landing on the back of a crab man attempting to flank her ally. With quick, surgical strikes, she severed its jointed limbs before driving both blades into its back. "Cyrus, left!" she called out, spotting a wraith moving to blindside him.
Cyrus immediately spun, his trident glowing brighter as he summoned a vortex of water to trap the wraith in place. "Sylus, now!" he shouted. Sylus nodded, channeling his magic to condense the water around the trapped wraith into a solid block of ice. The wraith thrashed inside, its light dimming, before Cyrus shattered the ice prison with a powerful thrust of his trident.
Another wraith retaliated by unleashing a pulse of energy that sent Jesua tumbling backward. She caught herself mid-roll, kicking off the ground to regain her stance. "These things are slippery," she muttered, her eyes scanning for the next threat. Spotting a fishman charging her, she sidestepped at the last moment, slashing both its legs and leaving it flailing on the ground.
The crab men, though fewer in number, fought with relentless ferocity. One charged at Sylus, its remaining claw glowing with water magic as it prepared a crushing blow. Sylus planted his staff into the seabed and conjured a thick wall of ice, but the crab man shattered through it with brute force. Before it could reach him, Cyrus intercepted with a diving strike, his trident piercing through the creature's carapace. "Watch your six, Sylus!" he growled.
The Abyssal Wraiths began to adapt, their movements growing faster and more erratic. They emitted waves of disorienting light that refracted through the water, making it difficult to distinguish real threats from illusions. Jesua closed her eyes momentarily, relying on instinct as she slashed through the light, her blades meeting resistance as she struck one of the wraiths. It let out a high-pitched shriek before dissolving into motes of light.
Sylus took a deep breath, his hands glowing as he prepared a larger spell. "Cover me!" he shouted. Cyrus and Jesua moved in tandem, their strikes coordinated to keep the remaining enemies at bay. Sylus unleashed a massive wave of freezing energy that surged outward, coating the battlefield in frost. The crab men and fishmen slowed, their movements sluggish, while the wraiths flickered and dimmed under the assault.
The trio regrouped, their breathing heavy but their resolve unshaken. The battlefield was far from cleared, but they held their ground, their coordination and quick thinking keeping them alive against overwhelming odds. The fight raged on, the enemies adapting and retaliating with every passing moment.
What do you think?
