Chapter 59
"Be careful, don't go over there just yet!"
A familiar voice reached her ears, and Ye Bai was startled, her scalp tingling as she instinctively took a large step back into the corridor behind her.
"Tap."
The sound of her footstep echoed faintly as it brushed against the scattered gravel on the corridor floor.
Having spent the entire night dealing with this voice, Ye Bai couldn’t possibly forget who it belonged to. She turned her gaze toward the direction of the sound but didn’t see the familiar figure of the '2D guy' in the corridor where she had expected him to be.
At that moment, Ye Bai heard footsteps approaching from a distance, accompanied by the rhythmic clinking of metal chains.
This sound wasn’t unfamiliar to her. In both Meiluo City and Tute City, she had often heard similar noises when passing by guards clad in heavy metal armor.
—Something was heading toward Ye Bai’s location.
Given that this was a dragonkin settlement and the approaching figure was armored, it had to be a dragonkin guard—or rather, an undead guard now. Being a guard, its level was likely at least 40, and it might even be an elite variant.
Crap!
Ye Bai cursed inwardly. The strange humanoid figure had clearly been trying to warn her about the approaching guard, but his sudden warning had startled her, causing her to make a slight noise. Now, it seemed the guard had been drawn to the sound.
For a moment, Ye Bai felt both panic and frustration, but then she realized she couldn’t blame the strange figure. If it weren’t for his warning, she would have already stepped out to chase after the donkey.
If she had ventured out into the outer passage, she would have been spotted by the guard by now.
However, even though they were in the ruins, it was still daytime. The perception of undead creatures was significantly weakened during the day, and their alert range was much smaller compared to nighttime.
Sensing the guard’s approach, Ye Bai immediately blew out the candle in her hand. Using the faint glow from the corridor, she stood in the passageway and began to retreat step by step, her movements slow and deliberate.
Thanks to the Featherweight effect, her retreat was completely silent.
Compared to their vision, undead creatures were far more sensitive to sound. As long as the distance was sufficient, Ye Bai could see the guard, but the guard might not necessarily 'see' her.
However, to maintain complete silence, Ye Bai’s movements were painstakingly slow. Even as she continued to retreat, the distance she covered was minimal. Meanwhile, the heavy footsteps of the armored guard grew closer and closer.
"Thud, thud, thud…"
The heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor, drawing nearer with each step.
The air around Ye Bai seemed to grow thick, the tension and pressure reaching a peak. A thin layer of sweat formed on the tip of her nose.
But the more tense the situation, the calmer Ye Bai’s mind became.
Even though she could tell that the unknown dragonkin undead guard had reached the edge of her corridor and was just one step away from coming into her line of sight, her mind remained as cool and calculating as a machine. She didn’t panic but continued to retreat slowly, maintaining her previous posture.
"Thud."
A tall figure blocked part of the faint light coming from the corridor ahead. Half of the dragonkin undead guard’s body now stood at the entrance of the passageway.
A faint breeze carried the smell of decay and gloom from the guard, causing Ye Bai to involuntarily wrinkle her nose.
Now she could see the side profile of the guard. It was a towering humanoid creature, at least three meters tall, covered in scales and wreathed in ghostly blue flames. The corridor was relatively low compared to the outer passage, so from her angle, she could only see its shoulders and chin—
Though 'chin' wasn’t quite accurate, as the area that should have been its chin was now half-shattered, with a decayed hole in its place. It was unclear whether this damage was from an accident or a battle.
But for undead creatures, as long as their soul flame remained unextinguished, their physical appearance was like Lego bricks—they could be reassembled and used, even if the parts weren’t 'original.'
From its appearance, Ye Bai recognized that this guard was likely a sub-dragon. The corridor she was in had been dug by the lower-ranking dragonkin, so it wasn’t tall enough to accommodate the guard’s height.
Seeing this, Ye Bai used an Insight ability from a distance.
Sub-Dragon Undead Guard
Level: 5?
Health: ????/????
Skills: ???
Weaknesses: Light, Fire, ???
This was an undead monster above level 50. Despite its health appearing to be only four digits, it was clad in heavy armor, so its true strength lay in its defense, not its health. Ye Bai’s level 20 spell penetration wouldn’t do much damage to it.
Moreover, 1000 was a four-digit number, and so was 9999—but the difference between the two was massive.
The sub-dragon undead guard paused at the entrance of the corridor, seemingly confused and uncertain.
Ye Bai tightened her grip on her Snowfrost Sword and the magic scroll in her hand.
A single sub-dragon undead guard wasn’t something Ye Bai couldn’t handle. She could have whittled it down like a boss, but the trouble was that this was a dragonkin settlement ruin. As a patrol guard, it would call for reinforcements if it detected an enemy.
This was the trouble with humanoid monsters—they were intelligent and strategic. While undead creatures had lost their brains, their intelligence and strategy were downgraded, but they made up for it with fearlessness and fast communication. High-ranking undead could issue commands to their subordinates through a mental network, which was part of what made the undead calamity so terrifying.
The undead were one of the most potentially powerful races among the six major races, but their weaknesses were too obvious, and they required a large number of strong corpses to become a significant force.
As these thoughts raced through her mind, Ye Bai suddenly remembered something—if what the strange humanoid figure had hinted at was true, and the six major races of the divine realm had fallen, then the undead would likely rise to become the dominant force in the current divine realm, the most terrifying power of all.
At that moment, the sub-dragon undead guard paused for a moment before moving again.
Ye Bai hoped it would leave after finding nothing, but just as it turned toward the corridor, it stopped once more.
"Rustle…"
Ye Bai watched as the sub-dragon undead guard bent its knees and leaned its head into the corridor.
Two flickering soul flames in its eye sockets 'looked' directly at Ye Bai.
In her vision, a wide health bar for the elite monster slowly expanded, stretching so far that it even 'clipped' through the walls of the corridor.
The health bar was so long it 'glitched,' huh?
At this point, Ye Bai could only find some humor in the situation, silently preparing to cast Light Arrow and lure the guard out of the corridor.
If she moved quickly, she could escape before more undead arrived, though she would have to abandon the donkey.
However, in the next moment, Ye Bai saw the sub-dragon undead guard pause. The flames in its eye sockets flickered, and the health bar she had seen retracted, as if it had only been trying to scare her before retreating back out of the corridor.
Ye Bai was surprised by this but immediately stopped casting her spell to avoid aggroing the guard.
The sub-dragon undead guard stepped back out of the corridor and looked toward the lower part of the outer passage—the direction where Ye Bai had seen the donkey enter through the giant door earlier.
This time, without hesitation, the guard strode forward, heading down the passage at a much faster pace, almost breaking into a jog, as if something more urgent had caught its attention.
Had the donkey caused some kind of commotion?
Ye Bai felt both puzzled and concerned. Then she remembered the strange humanoid figure who had spoken earlier and began searching the corridor walls where she had heard his voice.
By the faint light in the passage, Ye Bai did not see any carvings on the surrounding stone walls. Just as she hesitated whether to light a candle to search more carefully, a familiar voice rang out again:
"I'm here! I'm in your hand."
Ye Bai: "……?"
In her hand?
Ye Bai lowered her head to look at her hands. In her right hand was a gleaming snow-white sword, and in her left was a magic scroll ready to be unleashed… the magic scroll!
Conventional magic scrolls are made from specially treated parchment, inscribed with magical runes using enchanted ink. Just like the draconic script carved on the massive stones, these runes are also a form of magical language imbued with energy.
So… with a sudden realization, Ye Bai noticed something on the rolled-up outer layer of the magic scroll she had just taken out from her backpack. The scroll, produced in the underground city of Melo, bore a humanoid figure formed by the lines of magical runes, waving at her in a familiar gesture.
Due to the limited space on the rolled parchment, the figure was significantly smaller. In the dim light, Ye Bai brought the scroll closer to her eyes and finally saw the eerie, palm-sized humanoid figure clearly.
This time, the figure's style had changed. Perhaps due to the medium and the style of the runes, it was no longer the stick-figure-like carving she had seen on the white stones of the dragon tomb ruins.
Now, written in black magical ink, the figure had simple lines forming flowing hair and facial features, evolving from a stick figure into a minimalist line drawing… it had truly become "anime-style."
This was absurd beyond belief!
Ye Bai was utterly dumbfounded. While she wasn’t entirely surprised by the appearance of the eerie figure—after all, aside from dropping a suspiciously tricky quest, it had also mentioned the dragon's treasure vault—she was caught off guard by how it had manifested.
She had initially thought this guy was confined to being a "2D" figure on walls, but now she discovered he could also become a "paper-thin" character—literally a paper-thin person!
And this was a magic scroll she had just taken out from her backpack. How had this guy followed her? Could it also bypass her backpack like the donkey?
Why are divine beings so shameless?
At the same time, as Ye Bai leaned closer, the figure stiffly retracted its hand. On its "face," outlined by a circular line, two ambiguous horizontal lines appeared.
When the eerie figure spoke again, its voice carried a hint of embarrassment:
"Um, you might be a bit too close…"
"Huh?"
It took Ye Bai a moment to realize what the two extra lines meant, and she was left speechless—Why are you blushing, you ridiculous paper-thin character?!
What do you think?
