Chapter 60
Ye Bai raised her head, looking down at the magic scroll in her hand.
Her tone was icy as she addressed the nameless, eerie figure: "I didn’t expect us to meet again so soon. I think you owe me a proper explanation as to why you’ve appeared on my magic scroll!"
If it weren’t for the fact that the other party had just warned her about the undead guards, showing a certain degree of goodwill, Ye Bai would have already thrown the scroll away by now.
The other party was mysterious, burdened with a powerful curse, and had always been trying to assign her tasks involving deities. Naturally, Ye Bai had always been wary of them.
"This situation is… a bit complicated," the figure replied, their tone once again tinged with awkwardness.
"Then take your time explaining," Ye Bai said. She couldn’t afford to interact with this strange figure without understanding the situation. She asked the question that concerned her the most: "Can you enter my backpack?"
"Of course not," the figure waved their hand. Oh, now that they looked like a little ink-drawn figure, they didn’t seem as eerie anymore. Ye Bai decided to rename them "Paper Man" in her mind.
Paper Man waved their hand and explained, "The curse on me has erased my existence in reality. I can only drift within written words. Because you took the magic scroll out of your backpack, I was able to appear and communicate with you."
Ye Bai asked, "What happens if I put the scroll back in the backpack?"
"Then you won’t be able to see me anymore," Paper Man replied matter-of-factly.
Ye Bai was skeptical. When Paper Man wasn’t present, she couldn’t see them anyway, so she couldn’t verify the truth of this information by putting the scroll back in her backpack.
"Can you enter other scrolls too?"
As she spoke, Ye Bai took out another magic scroll from her backpack.
Paper Man, understanding her intention, immediately performed a jumping motion from the scroll in Ye Bai’s left hand and appeared on the scroll in her right hand.
This magic scroll was written with frost magic ink, and after Paper Man appeared on it, their outline turned a deep ink-blue.
Ye Bai raised an eyebrow. "From the Dragon Tomb Ruins to here, that’s quite a distance. How did you get here? The jumping distance you mentioned earlier isn’t what you said it was, is it?"
Paper Man glanced at Ye Bai’s expression and, seeing that she wasn’t visibly angry, cautiously replied, "Actually, once someone can communicate with me, I can choose to appear on any written medium near someone who knows me."
As expected, this Paper Man isn’t simple! This curse is practically a memetic infection!
Ye Bai frowned, immediately pondering the implications of this statement.
Did this mean that as long as Paper Man successfully communicated with someone, they could instantly travel to any written medium without delay?
Everyone who successfully communicated with them would become a vector for spreading the curse, with the only barrier being the ability to recognize the written medium they inhabited.
Ye Bai was horrified. "So, as long as you hide within widely known ordinary text, you could travel the entire world? You lied earlier—you haven’t been near the Dragon Tomb all this time!"
"No, no, I really was near the Dragon Tomb for a long time. I can only exist within written words imbued with magical power, and…" Paper Man sighed bitterly, "it’s limited to those with divine blood. For a long time, you’re the first person I’ve been able to communicate with."
Hearing this, Ye Bai couldn’t help but ask, "What about donkeys? Do they count?"
Paper Man was taken aback, their eyebrows lifting in surprise, as if they hadn’t expected Ye Bai to ask such a question. Then they firmly shook their head. "Of course, donkeys don’t count."
So, it’s player-limited… wait, aside from players, the five major races of the divine realm, excluding the ancient dragon race, also possess the status of divine blood.
If "donkeys don’t count," then the true identity of the donkey is still worth pondering.
"…" After a moment of silence, Ye Bai took a deep breath. "So, my ‘recognition’ has become part of your curse? Am I now one of the victims of this curse?"
"Yes, but you won’t be a victim," Paper Man nodded, then quickly added, "You can see my current state—I can’t interfere with the real world. Please rest assured, I mean you no harm!"
Ye Bai looked at Paper Man, who could only exist in two dimensions, and thought about their earlier warning. Her lips twitched. "Yes, there is harm."
Paper Man was puzzled. "What harm?"
Ye Bai replied, "Psychological harm."
Paper Man: "…"
At that moment, Ye Bai’s expression changed. She looked toward the corridor outside and heard the sound of footsteps similar to those of the undead dragonkin guards from earlier. But this time, there were many more—some coming from above, others from below.
Earlier, Ye Bai had glanced around and noticed two pathways on either side of the giant door below, leading to unknown places. The donkey had emerged from one of them, though she had no idea how it had gotten there.
Remembering the reaction of the undead dragonkin guard earlier, Ye Bai temporarily stopped interrogating Paper Man and carefully moved closer to the corridor wall, waiting.
Soon, as the sound of numerous footsteps grew louder, Ye Bai saw a large number of undead creatures of various shapes and sizes passing through the outer corridor.
These undead seemed to have been summoned, moving with a clear purpose. Naturally, none of them noticed Ye Bai, who was silently observing.
"Clang—"
A heavy, drawn-out sound echoed from below. Ye Bai realized that the giant door had been opened. More footsteps could be heard below, and even though she couldn’t see, she could imagine a large number of dragonkin undead gathering nearby, pulling open the massive door and flooding inside.
Ye Bai didn’t dare move, staying still and waiting. At that moment, Paper Man’s voice sounded again:
"They seem to have received orders, all converging toward one location, and it’s not the treasure vault. Why not…"
Seeing Ye Bai raise a finger to shush them, Paper Man instinctively lowered their voice and explained, "Don’t worry, they can’t hear me."
Hearing this, Ye Bai lowered her hand and looked at the dragonkin undead, who seemed to be leaving one after another. She wore a thoughtful expression.
Seeing this, Paper Man seized the opportunity to make another tempting offer, knowing Ye Bai couldn’t interrupt them now: "I know you need the Weaving Clan’s fabrics. The dragon treasure vault must have plenty. Now that the dragonkin undead here are distracted by something, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!"
Facing Ye Bai's skeptical gaze, the paper figure whispered like a devil:
"I know the exact location of the Dragon Clan's treasure vault, and my sensing range is quite far. Just like how I warned you about the undead approaching earlier, I can also provide some minor assistance during this process..."
After a whole night of back-and-forth with the paper figure, Ye Bai could tell that this tempting offer was definitely aimed at using her, a 'three-dimensional being,' to achieve some goal. But at this moment, it genuinely appealed to her.
From the behavior of these undead, it seemed like they had received orders from a higher-ranking undead entity. They had all swarmed out, and the priority of the command was so high that even the draconian guard undead had abandoned attacking Ye Bai. The health bar it displayed wasn’t fake.
Ye Bai didn’t know what exactly was happening here, but it was indeed as the paper figure had said: now was the perfect time to explore this area. As long as she avoided the zones where the undead were gathering, the rest of the area was relatively safe. For a low-level player like Ye Bai, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Ye Bai didn’t respond to the paper figure immediately. Instead, she waited for the last of the draconian undead's footsteps to fade away. Only when the area had completely fallen silent did she pick up the magic scroll and ask directly:
"In your current state, you can’t interfere with reality. So why are you so eager to get to the treasure vault?"
At this point, the paper figure lowered its head slightly and admitted honestly: "All my power now comes from written forms. In the Dragon Clan's treasure vault, there’s a codex. If I can enter that codex, I can restore some of my strength. But I don’t have your eyes—I can’t get there on my own."
"Oh? Restore?" Ye Bai seized on the key point.
"Hehe..." The paper figure scratched its head and laughed sheepishly. "To be honest, I feel like I was once a powerful being."
Ye Bai twitched her lips. "I believe that."
If it wasn’t strong, it wouldn’t have been worthy of such a bizarre curse. Now, Ye Bai dismissed her earlier speculation. The curse on the paper figure couldn’t have come from a demigod—it had to be from a deity above level 100.
Someone who could provoke a deity-level powerhouse was no ordinary character. Perhaps... Ye Bai glanced at the 'Force Field Repulsion' spell scroll in her hand. Perhaps there was once a deity-level powerhouse sealed inside it.
"So you’ve been bringing up the Dragon Clan's treasure vault all this time to lure me in, just so you can enter the codex..."
Seeing Ye Bai’s expression grow increasingly stern, the paper figure hurriedly added, "And then everything in the treasure vault will be yours, including the codex!"
What a piece of work. If Ye Bai didn’t have ample experience with empty promises, she might not have caught the issue here.
If this guy had really issued a 'Dragon Clan Treasure Vault' quest, the rewards would naturally be things Ye Bai could obtain after entering. And once she took the first step, there would be no turning back.
Ye Bai said, "And then you’d use those things as rewards to get me to help you break your curse, right?"
"..." The paper figure fell silent, staring at a pattern on the parchment as if it were some priceless piece of art.
Ye Bai sighed silently. She hadn’t misjudged—this paper figure was indeed a master of empty promises!
Of course, Ye Bai wasn’t about to fall for this particular trap. She had her own standards. She couldn’t fully trust the paper figure, but it was undeniable that it needed her to act.
As long as she helped it achieve its goal, Ye Bai didn’t have to worry about being abandoned. In fact, she could take advantage of its warning abilities to further her own objectives.
"Are there any undead nearby?" Ye Bai asked in a low voice.
The paper figure replied immediately, "No, the closest undead are over a hundred meters away from you."
The paper figure’s sensing range exceeded a hundred meters... Ye Bai raised an eyebrow, gripping the magic scroll and her Snowfrost Sword as she stepped out of the passageway and onto the stone-paved path.
Below, the massive gate was indeed wide open, revealing a huge passage illuminated by glowing fluorite. The eerie, bluish light cast an otherworldly glow, leading to an unknown destination.
Under the 'gaze' of two dragon statues flanking the entrance, Ye Bai’s figure slowly stepped inside.
What do you think?
