CH.601 Portal Exploration Squad: Area Guardians and Rulers

CH.601 Portal Exploration Squad: Area Guardians and Rulers

[Unika POV]

After our run-in with Silon yesterday, we learned about the area guardians and area rules. Powerful monsters that rule over an area of this world.

And any information on these rulers and guardians is exactly the type of thing we came here for.

Okay, that is actually a lie. We came here because I wanted to.

I’ve always been envious of the adventurers the others went on with Brian. Especially Alice and Lua. They got to experience so many firsts with him. I didn’t. So I was hoping that by insisting on this exploration, I could experience something like that with him.

I pushed him to allow it, but then Brian used a logical argument to not join the squad. And at that point it was too late to cancel it. So I may as well use it to the fullest.

That means learning about the area guardians and rulers. They sound like extremely powerful monsters, so Brian might appreciate knowing about them.

I wonder if Nir is an area guardian? He is an SS-rank monster, so he might be. But then again, he probably would be an area ruler instead.

Getting in contact with the great earth beast wasn’t as easy as I hoped. He lives underground, and only came to the surface to scare away threats. And we didn’t want to make ourselves into a threat.

Instead, we had to come up with a different strategy. Indigo recommended we try to lure the beast with food, but we didn’t exactly know what beast we had to deal with, so we didn’t know what food would lure it.

Besides, can a beast living underground even smell food on the surface?

… But maybe one of the cards Brian had given me could help? He gave me a bunch of cards that he called ‘super situational’ before we left on this adventure.

I handed a few of them to Einar and Eline to read, because there were a bunch of them. Einar was the first to find something. Book of Taiyou, a card that could reveal a hidden monster. It was promising, but I wanted to see what other options we had. Next option was Dark-Piercing Light, which seemed quite similar to Book of Taiyou, but I personally feel the book is more reliable, since we are trying to reach an underground monster.

Spoiler

Finally I found something that should be perfect for the situation. Dark Designator. It can call a specific monster, which is exactly what we want.

Spoiler

I activated the card, calling for the great earth beast. I didn’t know if that was its true name, but since that is what the other monsters in the area called it, it will hopefully respond to the name.

It didn't take long for us to get the confirmation, as the ground below our feet began to shake. And that can only mean one thing. The great earth beast is coming.

I suppose it makes sense. If the great earth beast is powerful enough to make mountains, surely it just moving can cause minor earthquakes.

After a few more minutes of the earth shaking, a side of one of the mountains burst open, and a massive quadrupedal beast crawled out of the hole.

It was one of the largest monsters I’d ever seen, rivaling some of Brian’s God monsters in size. And it most definitely was larger than usual SS-rank monsters.

It had massive claws on its front legs, likely for digging through dirt and stone, eyes that looked cloudy, as if it couldn’t see much, and a snout with whiskers. In short, it seemed to be an enormous mole.

And I’ve read monster encyclopedias. There has never been a record of an SS-rank mole monster. So I took out my phone and took a picture of the monster. I’ll take more later, but I wanted to have at least one in case we needed to run.

{Yawnnn!!!}

As we were still considering if the beast was dangerous or not, a yawn that vibrated the earth came from its mouth. It honestly took me back so much that I almost laughed because of it.

Here is this crazy powerful beast, and it just yawns like anyone else after a good nap.

… wait! Was it napping? Did we wake it up? I really hope not. That probably isn’t good.

Or maybe it is? The spirits were happy after Brian and Cailie woke them up.

“Eh. … Great Earth Beast!” I called out. “Would you talk with us for a bit?”

The beast seemed to hear me, as it turned to face me.

{... Humanoids… I didn’t know … you had been born here.} The beast spoke slowly, with each of its words trembling the ground.

“No!” I responded. “We weren’t born here! We traveled here by a portal linking our worlds!” I informed the mole.

{I see … Visitors … Make sure … you keep this world … beautiful.} The beast ordered us. {Otherwise … We will … deal with you.}

I didn’t like the feeling of the ground tremors that came from those last words. They were clearly a threat, but luckily, we weren’t planning on doing anything to this world.

“Do not worry, Great Earth Beast!” I told him. “We won’t destroy anything! We are only here to explore the lands and find monsters we can later summon to our side!”

{I see … Happy to hear … that some of you still care.}

I wondered how this beast knew of humanoids if there really are none on this side. Is it because of Summoning Magic? Or are summoned monsters monsters that have been reborn after their death in the world we live in?

I need to ask Brian for his opinion when we return.

“Great Earth Beast!” I called out again. “We would like to know more about area guardians and area rulers! Would you tell us about them?”

{Guardians … Rulers … Yes … I can … Tell you.} He answered. {I am … the guardian of this area … The Great Mountain Range Mole … Sagarmatha.}

From there, we learned of a few area guardians and rulers. That included the area ruler that attacked my Big Core MK-2.

She is the Great Solar Flare Fox, Stella. And hearing that got me all kinds of excited. A fox area ruler. And one that specializes in Fire and Light Magic. I want that.

Other guardians and rulers in the area included the Great River Snake, Nerodia.

The Whole Plains Plant, Evergreen.

And The Great Sky Dragon, Uṛanta.

Out of them, Evergreen and Uṛanta were both considered guardians, while Nerodia was somewhere between a guardian and a ruler. Nerodia was willing to kill invaders in his area, but Evergreen was able to keep him mostly in check, so he only killed real invaders or monsters that actually caused problems.

And Stella was an aggressive ruler, annihilating anyone attempting to get to her mountain.

I made sure to note down all of the guardians and rulers in my notebook. Because just this is already enough that we can call this first adventure good, and we can return home.

… or we could, but Stella is calling my name. Okay, I know she isn’t, but I’m calling her name. She will be Mine!

I told my companions as much and they just looked at me like I was crazy. Which admittedly, I might be.

These area guardians are monsters beyond SS-rank, and I wanted one. And not just that, I wanted the most aggressive one. Before we even knew if we could even make a contract with them.

Luckily, we had one of the guardians with us. So we could just ask. Sagarmatha told us that it was possible to summon them, but he didn’t know if someone had ever managed to form a contract with an area ruler or guardian.

It would also be extremely mana intensive to summon a ruler or a guardian, so most couldn’t do it.

But I am not most people. I am one of Brian’s fiancée and I am determined.

… But admittedly I’m also not foolish. I won’t just go in with arrows flying, it won’t work. I need a strategy.

So I began to look through the cards I had in my deck, as well as the cards Brian gave me.

[Einar POV]

“... We need to stop her.” Eline said, pointing at Unika. “She’ll get herself killed.”

“I know.” I agreed. “But how? She will get mad if we restrain her. She is more skilled than us. Stronger than us. And do you really want to fight her?”

“... No. But we need to do something.”

“... Master could stop her. We could go get him.” I suggested.

“... I … Yes. That might be for the best.” Eline agreed.

“YES!” Unika called out. “That will work!”

“Oh no.” My sister muttered. “She figured something out.”

“... we need to hurry and get Master.” I said, but before we could just leave, Unika spoke up.

“New plan. You all are heading home. This is not up for negotiations.” She ordered, as she took her tamed monsters into Tamer’s Paradise. Indigo was about to resist, but Unika gave her a look that told that her orders are final. Besides, without us, Indigo and her team will be lost here. They don’t have anything that could point them back to the portal, nor do they have cross dimensional emergency teleporters like us.

“Einar, Eline. Take everyone back. I’ll follow when I’m done with Stella!” Unika declared. She tossed the notebook she had been writing in, as well as the Space Magic bracelet Brian gave her, to me, and I caught them out of reflex.

Then, before I could say anything to her, Unika had already summoned her Delta Tri, gotten into the ship and blasted off.

Spoiler

“...” It took me a second to take in, but I realized we needed to move. Now!

“Everyone! Pack up, we are leaving!” I called out.

Eline accepted my order without question, but Indigo didn’t seem so sure. So I explained.

“Unika is going to take on that monster that attacked us. She thinks she can do it because … I don’t know. And at this point, the only one who can stop her is Brian. So we need to go home and inform him.” I explained.

“But … … alright.” Indigo seemed to ponder for a second, but she gave in. “Team. Pack up, we are leaving!

I went to work picking up everything we’d left behind. We then said goodbye to Sagarmatha, the great earth beast, as well as Silon. I summoned a ship for us and we took off towards the portal.

I flew as fast as the ship could go, and as soon as we got to the portal, we beamed ourselves down to it.

By the time I got down and unsummoned our ship, Eline had already opened the light fence and rushed through the portal, so I stayed by the fence on this side, so it would be open for Brian. And in case Brian needed an escort. I knew where the mountain Unika headed to was.

It took what felt like forever, but also not all that long for Brian to literally fly through the portal. And before I really realized what was happening, he had caught me in his arms and I was flying with him, surrounded by a strange energy that comes from one of his flight skills.

Next thing I knew, I was sitting in the cockpit of Master’s Victory Viper, and he was asking me for directions.

Spoiler

It took me just a second to gather myself, but after I did, I pointed in the correct direction and the ship blasted off towards the mountain that Stella ruled.
