Destroying My Own World

Chapter 358 Self-sacrifice.

Two months had passed since Melissa reformed the Verdentia Republic and everything looked promising. When Melissa thought everything was under control, problems started to appear, problems that couldn't be said to be a coincidence. It was like bolts of lightning struck the ground dozens of times at the same spot over and over.

The sources for fresh and clear water were gone in a single night, everything was dried up. The livestock died mysteriously and the crops died for no reason that in just three days everything went downhill. The food and water shortage hadn't been solved, and yet nature seemed to detest the nation.

Mykel was enjoying his time in the park in the Verdentia Republic, staring at the trees. He simply imagined all the trees dead around him and it came true in a blink of an eye. People started to grab their phones and record everything that was happening in the park.

"Are the Gods hate us?!" A woman covered her mouth with her trembling hands. "Why the Gods punish us?" she added while trembling in fear.

The words about a Goddess descended to help humans fight demons were spread around the world. Cults and groups of people started to make up a revelation that the world was coming to its end. Of course, it was Elestria who spread the word to the world and made the people believe what happened to the Verdentia Republic was a punishment from the Gods.

Mykel left the park and turned the whole city upside down by making pests aggressive. Rats, cockroaches, and flies brought diseases that were enough to overwhelm the people of Verdentia. With the lack of food and clean water, everyone was vulnerable to those diseases that it was above seventy percent chance of catching the disease.

In just a week, the Verdentia Republic was in a state worse than before now that diseases had spread rapidly. The whole nation was being locked down and both the Faelethria Kingdom and Dystrovia Nation forbade anyone from the Verdentia Republic from coming in.

Not a single person in the Verdentia Republic believed it was a man-made catastrophe, it was a divine punishment from the Gods. The reason was that the Dystrovia nation and the Faelethria Kingdom were so blessed by the Gods that they broke the record for the best harvests in the past two decades.

The cults and the radical groups' strength grew rapidly and believed the Verdentia Republic couldn't be saved. Not to mention, there was a rumor that Elestria turned out to be a descendant of a Goddess after she could cure cancer and incurable diseases when she received a revelation.

"Miss President?" Zachary looked at Melissa busy with the reports on her desk. "You seem busy, so I will come back later," he pointed out.

"No, just give it to me," Melissa looked at the documents in Zachary's hands with a tired face where she could fall asleep if she closed her eyes even for a few seconds.

Zachary gave the documents and when Melissa read about the content, she was shocked. It was information from intelligence about the cult's movements. What shocked her was the fact the cults believed it was her who made the Gods do everything to the Verdentia Republic. They were planning to get rid of her even if it meant death, and they would take extreme measures to achieve their goal.

"Her Majesty really knows how to bring a crisis to our nation, huh?" Melissa chuckled in disbelief. "How far does she want our people to suffer to satisfy her greed?" she dropped the documents and rubbed her nose bridge. Read latest stories on My Virtual Library Empire

"I believe it's time to surrender, Miss President," Zachary furrowed his eyebrows and he was more concerned about Melissa's health than the nation's situation. "Let her get what she wants and everything will be over," he added.

"Do you believe it as well? I'm talking about the divine punishment, God's wrath," Melissa looked at Zachary.

"It's hard to say because I do believe that what's happening right now isn't man-made, but you have to see this," Zachary approached Melissa and pulled out his phone. "In this video, you might recognize a familiar face," he showed a video on the internet when the trees in the park withered in just a few seconds.

Melissa saw Mykel walking away, and she was unsure at first until she repeated the video over and over. She was convinced it was Mykel and she was confused why Mykel was in Verdentia.

"You're telling me that everything that's happening right now is because of him?" Melissa asked with her eyes squinted.

"He possesses powers and abilities that can make people call him a God. I'm the living proof of his miraculous power, and if it was him, I believe he could do all this," Zachary explained as he watched the video and looked at Mykel's face.

Melissa rubbed her face as she thought about what to do, and suddenly she grabbed her phone. She called Mykel because she believed that Mykel did all that under Elestria's order. She wanted his opinion of what to do and to question the promise that he made to her.

"Can we meet?" Melissa asked and she sounded nervous, desperate, and tired.

Zachary looked at how skinny Melissa was and he wanted her to rest, but it would be too selfish of him. He wanted to help, but he couldn't do anything in politics or public relationships because he didn't have the skills for those.

"Mykel is in the orphanage right now..." Melissa hung up the phone and looked at Zachary. "Can you drive me there?" she asked.

Zachary nodded and then left to prepare the car for Melissa.

They arrived at the orphanage and they were surprised when they saw a truck full of food parked at the orphanage. They both could hear the laughter of the children and how happy they were, giving them a bit of peace of mind for Melissa.

When they were about to enter, Mykel was sitting at the back of the truck with a cigarette in his mouth. They approached him and looked at the food behind him that could feed a whole block. He suddenly grabbed something from the box next to him and offered them two burgers.

The burgers were still hot and they smelled so good that they both had to swallow their saliva. They ate the burger in their hands and it was the most delicious burger they ever had. Melissa who was tired and stressed suddenly became fresh and relaxed.

"Sacrificing oneself for the people is foolish because they will find another one that would sacrifice themselves for them. Take care of yourself then the people around you," Mykel looked at Melissa. "Let them suffer to know hardship. Hardship will create an easier life for them in the future. You encouraged your people to work together and where are they now? Pointing their fingers at you?" he raised his eyebrows.@@novelbin@@

"You know nothing about the people," Melissa looked at Mykel and she didn't like how he criticized her and assumed the people of Verdentia were weak.

Mykel grabbed the burger from Melissa's hand and ate it which shocked both Zachary and Melissa. Suddenly he reached out his hand at Melissa, making her furrowed her eyebrows with confusion.

"I need more of the burger, give me," Mykel stared Melissa in the eye. Melissa was taken aback and knew what he was trying to say. "Do you think they care about you and your promise if you can't even give them what they need?" he asked.

"I promise your people's wellbeing, but if this is how you deal with the situation by sacrificing yourself, I don't think they're worth the price," Mykel pointed out and he looked at Melissa coldly. "With that kind of mindset, do you think you can win against Elestria? She would easily threaten you people's lives to make you bow on your knees in front of her," he added.

"Elestria is about to make a move, but what have you prepared for her? To fight against her scheme and to keep your people stay loyal to you?" Mykel asked. "You're a compassionate and great leader, but you're not the leader they need right now," he jumped down and gave another burger to Melissa. "I'll be here, so give me your best resolution after you give it some thought," Mykel continued and entered the orphanage.

Zachary hadn't said a word and was busy enjoying the burger in his hand. One thing for sure was that he was glad that Mykel criticized Melissa for he agreed with some of Mykel's words. It also made him reflect on himself that self-sacrifice wasn't always the right thing to do. He grasped on what Mykel's meaning was behind those words, and that was the strong should lead the weak in any situation not to please them because they needed to.

"I have seen Mykel's leadership. He used dominance rather than compassion. They don't like it, but they follow him nonetheless because they fear him. What I'm trying to say is, that he has something that no one else has and made him a leader," Zachary said as he looked at Melissa.

"What do you think that I have that no one else has?" Melissa looked back at Zachary. "I have nothing, maybe a piece of burger in my hand," she scoffed.

"No, you have what other people don't have. You have the ability to adapt, and I believe you can find something that can prove your worth not only to Elsstria or Mykel but to the people as well," Zachary answered.
