Chapter 328 Famine
"We were dragged in here by the Aku Aku." Ika began her expanation, but Uriel didn't want to waste another second.
"I know that, I also know the reason why, Manu already explained things to me. Just tell me what's going on."
"Alright, we were trapped along with the Conti refugees. The first week was though, but most of us had traits and we were able to endure without issues, but the hunger eventually won and a small portion of the Rapanui resorted to cannibalism. At first, it was only those who already fell, but then, they started killing those without traits.
Most of our refugees didn't have traits an those who didn't eat human meat were too weak to fight. Because of that, the cannibals assumed the leadership and kept all of us like cattle."
"So, that's why you were scattered all over the place. To keep everyone safe from other hunters." Uriel nodded.
"Yes and no." Medusa replied and Ika continued her explanation.
"It was bad, but then we found some edible moss which is why we stayed in this part of the cave even though its cold and wet. Thanks to the moss we were able to fight them off and we've been trying to keep everyone safe, but every so often they come and attack us and each time someone dies we become weaker and they grow stronger.
Just when we lost all hope, your friends showed up and they saved us, but there's no point in prolonging this, we'll all die and become Aku Aku." Ika broke into tears that would have moved even a stone cold heart, all the sadness and the horrors she witnessed were packed in those small drops of salty water that trickled down her cheeks, but Uriel wasn't moved.
In fact, he didn't care much about how sad it was, how evil the people that resorted to cannibalism were. All he cared about was to find a solution to everyone's problems without costing him too much. He lingered for a few second then turned back completely ignoring the sobbing mess that was Ika.
"Wake up everyone, today is your lucky day!"
"Aaaand there he goes..." Sam shook his head trying to keep a smile from appearing on his face. He knew Uriel well enough to know that whatever he was about to do would probably save many lives, but it was impossible to know what would be the cost.
Those who were already awake began waking up those who were still sleeping. Uriel handed some flashlights to his friends and the slim figures of the famished inhabitants of Hanga Roa were revealed. They were so skinny they looked just like Nika did before she entered his shadow, though her case was different because she didn't need food but flux energy.
"Look, someone new came!" One of those present gasped.
"What is it? There's nothing you can do to help us. Even if you kill them, we'll die of starvation anyway." A less optimist one added.
"Who said anything about killing? My trait allows me to store items and I have a lot of food." Uriel said as he made an energy drink appear on his hand and everyone gasped in amazement. A trait like that was completely unheard of and would be considered relatively useless, except on very particular circumstances where it was a life saver.
"Wow! I knew your trait would be a hit at parties!" For some reason, Medusa too was in awe.
"Give me some food!" A man demanded.
"Me first!"
"Please, I have a child!"
"I'll do anything, just give me something to eat." A woman pleaded as she tried to latch on to him, but Luna was already sticking to him like a lamprea and she kicked the woman without hesitation. In spite of her cruelty, people from all over the cave surrounded Uriel, extending their skinny arms towards him and begging.
"Who said anything about giving you anything?" Uriel's eyes glinted in blue for a second as he channeled a small amount of flux. It was only meant to intimidate them, but the effect it had was way stronger than he expected and those who were near him fainted.
"You can't be so cruel!"
"You're a monster!"
"Calm down everyone, It's not like I can simply give you all my food for free. It was very expensive and using my trait is tiresome. Let me see, I'll sell you my food, at 1k credit the piece. You can take it or leave it."
"But we don't have any money with us!"
Uriel pretended to think for a few seconds and then continued.
"It's alright, you can pay me later."

"But what if we can't?" The same man that previously demanded food, asked.
"Then I'll take possession of this island."
"Uriel, don't you think you're going a little bit too far?" Medusa whispered on his ear, but Uriel shrugged in reply. Although she guessed he had his reasons to charge so much just for food, she was also aware of Uriel's greedy character.
"We'll pay. I, as long as you feed our young, we'll pay. If our elders refrain from receiving any food our debt will be smaller." An elder replied.
"Matu Atane!" A young man shouted.
"It's fine, son, don't care about us old people. We've lived long enough and we'll be glad to part knowing there's at least a glimmer of hope."
"Shut up and take your share, old man. I'll either feed everyone or no one, that's final." Uriel said as he threw an energy bar directly at the man who failed to catch it in the air.
The people in the cave were now in utter confusion. They couldn't decide whether the man in front of them was good or evil. The only thing they could say for sure, was that without him, there truly was no hope for them.
One by one, the inhabitants of Hanga Roa received their share. Some began eating immediately, while others made sure the children and the elder were fed first, but for a brief moment, only the silence of the plastic packages being open was heard in the cave.
What do you think?
