Chapter 62: Chapter 62 Private Mission is a Fraud (2)
The nine bodies from yesterday had completely decomposed overnight, leaving behind a pile of hard-to-decompose man-made items.
Ye Nai directed the fungus to surge like a tide, gathering the scattered relics into a pile before placing them alongside the previous findings.
Finally, she released the two cars and remembered something—were there hidden cameras in such high-end vehicles?
She spread the tent’s tarp over the roof to cover all the windows, climbed inside the car, turned on the mobile camera, and checked any reflective spots.
This search revealed that aside from the normal front and back dashcams, there was a micro camera above the interior rearview mirror, one under the rear window decal, and another in the crevice of the back seat.
It seemed like the work of different people.
...
Could it be that the faction was also involved in internal strife?
The thought crossed her mind but she quickly dismissed it as none of her concern. She collected the devices to store them in her Space, preventing the little gadgets with their blinking work lights from transmitting any content outside.
The Secret Realm’s network was not connected to the outside world. Data that could be transmitted in real time outside could not get through once inside the Secret Realm, unless the person orchestrating the operation had set up their own network within the Secret Realm and the cameras were dual-network capable to receive data seamlessly.
If they managed to accomplish that, she would concede they were capable and quietly await the next confrontation to see who would prevail in the end.
She also removed the storage cards from the dashcams; the camera on the interior rearview mirror was mounted directly above the dashcam, using this normal lens as a cover. She figured that normally no one would look there, otherwise, it would have been removed already.
Comparing, she increasingly believed the three different small cameras shooting inside from different positions in each car were installed by three different groups.
Assured there were no extra electronic devices in the car, Ye Nai stowed the car away, took out her electric bike, put on her helmet, and unsteadily rode onto the highway through the soft wasteland.
Once on the highway, it was much better. Her electric bike, primarily suited for city riding, was truly challenged in the wilderness. It floated and always felt on the verge of slipping, and its shock absorption was poor, shaking her from buttocks to back of head.
She opened the navigation app on her phone, confirmed her route home, and saw that the closest town was over two hundred kilometers away. Ye Nai turned the throttle to full and boldly sped along the deserted highway.
While riding, she felt fortunate. How timely it was that before being approached by a swindler, she had replaced her electric bike’s battery with a nuclear battery; otherwise, she would really be in a dilemma now.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt that in the future, whenever she sees something tempting, she shouldn’t hesitate. Even if she doesn’t need it immediately, she should buy it first.
After riding non-stop for over an hour and seeing that she had covered more than half her journey on her phone, Ye Nai decided to slow down, pull over to rest a bit, drink some water, and eat something. Since her mouth hurt that morning, she had only had a cup of soy milk and felt quite hungry.
Just then, she heard the horn of a car behind her, sounding intermittently, which seemed like a signaling pattern.
Ye Nai stopped the bike and was about to look back when a convoy screeched to a halt in front of her.
The front passenger window of the lead vehicle rolled down, revealing Captain Cao’s face.
“Ye Nai? Is that you, Ye Nai?”
“It’s me, Captain Cao,” Ye Nai responded, lifting her helmet visor. Due to oral ulcers, her speech was somewhat unclear, “How did you recognize me?”
“Saw your license plate,” Captain Cao frowned, “Why are you riding an electric bike alone in the Secret Realm? Where are you headed? Need a lift?”
“Where are you going?”
“Back to the danger zone. We can go together, right?”
“Sure, let’s go. I’m heading back too.”
Why ride by herself when she could get a lift? Ye Nai quickly got off her bike, her movements hindered by her injuries.
The experienced members of the team noticed her condition.
“What happened to you? Take off your helmet, let me see.”
“Ran into a swindler, hehe.”
Ye Nai put away the car and took off her helmet, unable to hide the triumphant smile on her startling face.
“Oh my God! Xiao Lizi!” Captain Cao shouted from his car towards the back of the convoy.
“Coming, coming!” A team member carrying a medical kit ran down from the fourth vehicle.
The team member in the front car’s back seat also got out and moved to another vehicle at the back, leaving the whole back seat for Ye Nai.
“Met a swindler? How many were there?”
“Nine, I fought nine of them.”
“I can see that, it was quite a fierce fight. Get on, get on. We’ll have lunch in the town ahead and won’t travel further today, so you can rest well.”
“Will it delay your schedule?”
“Mission completed, not so tight on the way back, resting half a day won’t hurt.”
The convoy set off again, Xiao Lizi, in charge of the team’s medical needs, helped Ye Nai take off her long-sleeved jacket. She said it was for sun protection, but it was also to cover injuries. Coupled with her helmet, if she weren’t moving awkwardly, no one would have known the dire state she was in.
“Just learned a few days of skills, and you dare to fight nine? You really are bold.”
Through the rearview mirror, Captain Cao observed Ye Nai, who grimaced in pain, and laughed as if delighting in her misfortune.
“How did they deceive you?”
“Paid full in advance, 500,000.”
“Right, classic trick, always works on rookies.”
“Why?”
“Because the remuneration is within a reasonable range; it’s not high enough to be suspicious, nor low enough to be near the official pay. With this price, it’s not just rookies who get hooked, veterans too fall for it.”
“What happens after being deceived?”
“Hah, leave it to fate then.”
“Tch, so these things are still unstoppable now.”
“Unstoppable, unless we find a way to close down these Space Channels and drive the enemies out of Blue Star. Without enemies, these issues will also lose their ground.”
“Without enemies, Awakeners won’t disappear; there will be other messes.”
“That’s a problem for after the enemies are driven away. Right now, we shouldn’t think too much about it, solving this damnable war is our greatest concern.”
“Our country is still okay, but what about the surrounding areas? Those countries are gone, and the invading enemies have occupied their lands. What do we do then, go on a massacre beyond our borders? Without penetrating them, we can’t even reach the Plane Channels in those areas.”
As the conversation reached this point, Ye Nai suddenly became excited; for her fungus, conducting a massacre was very convenient.
“Hmm, if we really find a way to close them, of course we’ll have to go beyond our borders to address the potential risks.”
“How might the vacant lands be arranged then?”
“Heh, our nation’s territory has expanded to its current size not as some giveaway for topping up phone credits.”
“True…” Ye Nai’s eyes shifted, going on a killing spree beyond borders wasn’t the immediate priority, and discussing it further could make her sound like a total psychopath. “Let’s drop this unsolvable topic, and talk about something lighter.”
“You’re injured like this, can barely speak clearly, yet you still feel like chatting?”
“What about the loot? Don’t you want it?”
What do you think?
