Chapter 1098: Traitor
Karyk had held back enough. If the other side still didn’t appreciate his kindness, then there was no need to resist the hunger.
The Aetherian Beast landed near the portal, looking at Karyk, who was still holding onto the arm. His eyes widened in disbelief. Was he seriously attacked by the youngest? Not only that, but he couldn’t even react in time.
How was the youngest son so strong? Shouldn’t he be weaker, especially since he hadn’t lived or trained in this world with the other Aetherians?
He placed his hand over his bleeding shoulder and burned his skin to close the wound.
"What are you doing there? Aren’t you going to stop me?" Karyk asked the Aetherian Beast as he released the ripped arm, letting it fall over his shadow. Experience tales at NovelBin.Côm
The arm was consumed by his shadow that appeared to have come back to life at that moment.
"I will kill you!" The Aetherian Beast stood up, his eyes filled with killing intent.
Initially, he only wanted to teach Karyk a lesson. But the youngest had gone a little too far. He had attacked him and defied the hierarchy. Just helping bring their ancestor’s body back wasn’t enough to offset his sins.
He also stopped holding back and rushed at Karyk with the clear intention of ripping his head off, just like his arm had been ripped.
While running, his body transformed into its beastly form, making the surrounding essence tremble. His roar alone was so loud that it even reached the core of this world, alerting the other Aetherian Beasts.
All the Aetherian Beasts looked in the direction of the portal, wondering who the Guardian was fighting to be so enraged. However, that roar stopped just as abruptly as it began.
The Aetherians that held the key to this world, and were able to open shortcuts to various parts of it, stood up. They opened portals to the location where that fierce roar had come from.
It took them barely ten seconds to reach that place. But they didn’t find any battle taking place. They were greeted by a thick scent of blood, but there was no one else there.
"Did the battle end already? But where did he go?" A few of them wondered about the whereabouts of the guardian.
"Even if the Guardian had ended the battle already, he wouldn’t have left this place. Then where did he go?" another asked.
"He didn’t leave. He was killed." The leader of the Aetherian Beasts placed his finger on the blood traces that were left behind.
He could see that the blood belonged to the Aetherian Beast. There was no other blood there. It left him shocked.
If the guardian was fighting someone with such seriousness, did it even make sense for him to die without even being able to make the other person bleed?
"The blood is still fresh. It hasn’t even been a few seconds since he died," he added. "What’s strange is that the trace disappears here. There is no trace of the corpse being moved. It’s as if the corpse has been devoured."
He could see the traces of other outsiders as well, but their traces disappeared near the portal. They had clearly left this place.
"Did the outsiders do it?" one of the Aetherians frowned.
"I don’t remember any outsider that can do something like this. If there was, a lot of us would have been dead. It was not an outsider..." The leader of the group sighed, thinking of a possibility.
There was another trace here, and it doesn’t belong to any outsider. If anything, that trace was more fresh than the trace of an outsider. It belonged to the Aetherian that they had accepted as their family.
"I really thought we could get along." He rubbed his forehead. "Why did he have to do something so foolish?"
"If it’s not an outsider, does it mean..." The others also realized the hidden implications. If this wasn’t done by an outsider, then only another Aetherian could have done this.
The only person that came to mind, was the one that had joined them just recently. This was the first time that an Aetherian had killed another Aetherian. Not only was one of them killed, but he was also devoured.
It was the ultimate form of disrespect for them. Many of them were even regretting trusting Karyk and accepting them amongst them.
Even the leader of the group felt like he was responsible. If he hadn’t given a key to Karyk, allowing him to enter the outer region so early, he never would’ve had the opportunity to reach the portal.
Karyk had killed his way to the portal, and then left. It made them believe that he was never a friend. Even if he was the same species as them, he was a traitor! They never should’ve trusted him just because he shared their blood.
There was an even bigger problem for him though. Karyk had a key, one of the rare few that existed in this world. Normally, he could have taken the key back, but he couldn’t even feel it anymore.
It was evident that Karyk had taken complete control of the key. If he was truly a traitor, then he might actually be able to lead the outsiders here, who had been craving to control this world.
His one mistake, had risked the complete destruction of the status quo and their peaceful life. He sighed, looking at the portal. The past couldn’t be changed anymore. They could only prepare for the future.
"Prepare for the worst..." he told the other Aetherians before disappearing.
Everyone could feel that their leader was in a bad mood. They didn’t try to stop him. One of them stayed behind to guard the portal, while the others returned to the central region of the world to warn other Aetherians about what just happened.
Meanwhile, the leader of Aetherians reached the cliff, where the body of their ancestor was buried. It was here that he had given that key to Karyk.
He looked in the direction of the vast ocean and roared at the top of his lungs. His roar, filled with his grief and rage, echoed across the entire world.
What do you think?
