Chapter 667 87
No one objected, as it is the best way to make use of their larger number and their defensive position.
"Are there any question?" Seeing no one saying anything, he gave his next order,
"Move to the battlefield!"

As the swarm rushed to the eastern wall, the army of 10 000 head behind the defenses build.
While the defenses were attacked during the numerous skirmishes, it was usually left alone. Even if the defenses suffer some damages, it was quickly rebuilt, as any flaw in the barricades could lead to disastrous outcome.
As the one fifth of Zell City Defense Army gathered, they formed a simple line formation, using phalanx tactic to mitigate the advantage individual Human Bugs have over the run-of-the-mill soldiers.
Using the spears, they can attack from a greater distance while not being in range to claw range of the monsters.
Of course, with enough corpses turned into literal shield, the advantage can be mitigated by the swarm. But, as long as they can keep as many as possible, distracting them for a long time, the swarm would be destroyed with as few casualties as possible.
However, to do that, they need to hold their ground, which is a difficult feat as a large army of Human Bugs, with their creepy figures charged at them.
Their running form cause the very ground to tremble as bellow of insect-like screech filled the air. It took every drop of courage in the soldiers' body to not bolt out while screaming like a child woken up by a nightmare.
"Hold your ground! Hold your ground!" the leader of the small army yelled, as he stood near the front. The man is an A-rank, so his armored figure give the soldiers will to stand.
And he was not the sole A-rank among them. Not speaking, but standing tall was Calle, the Guild Leader of Betrum Adventure Guild. If the presence of the leader makes the soldiers calmed and steady, the presence of Guild Leader Calle was like a burning sun, motivating them into fighting to the last man.
As the two leaders stood side by side, the soldiers leveled their spears, ready to impale the incoming monsters.

When the first wave of Hybrid Bugs charged towards the line of spears, some used the bodies of their fellow like a trampoline, sending themselves above the spears. Or would be if the soldiers did not learn their lesson.
The soldiers have decided to have the first two line having their spears parallel to the ground while the two behind them would point it upward, so the falling Hybrids would be impaled because of their own action.
The Hybrids, unable to redirect their landing, could only have spears piercing their guts as they trashed around, trying to get the spear holders to drop their weapon.
The soldiers managed to hold on, though it was a hard-fought battle. And seeing the lines of spears pointing to the sky, the Hybrids no longer attempt to jump and instead continuing their ruthless charge.
While some were killed, the rest were able to grab the blade of the spears before breaking it, rendering the weapon almost useless, as the splintered end could still do some damage, but more to giving splinters and little injuries than killing the Hybrids.
With their weapon turned useless, some of the soldiers dropped their weapon and head to the back, letting others with usable spears to enter the field, while those with ruined weapons pick up new one from the weapon store prepared beforehand.
As the Hybrids slowly chipped away the spear line, removing the weapon with methodical effectiveness, those on the walls started their move.
"Krraahh!" one of the Hybrid Bugs yelled as a javelin impaled it's on where human would have their hearts. More followed as rains of arrows, spears and stones filled the air, aiming solely at the approaching swarms.
Most miss, yet with the density of projectiles, some hit, killing the Hybrids or injure them. Yet, the Hybrids proved their resilience as even with spears and arrows sticking out of their bodies, some managed to stand and continue their rampage.
As the rain of projectile continued, a silver light burst through the rain of projectile, hitting a B-rank Hybrid. The B-rank Hybrid did not even see anything before its chest, and everything above it exploded into green gore.
Immediately, a portion of the swarm went mad, letting out ear-piercing screeches as they make their way towards the line of spears. However, as the mad charge get close to the defending soldiers, another screech filled the air.
Despite not being as loud, the screech demanded silence and obedience, causing the mad part of the swarm to calm down, almost lowering their heads before moving in raging, but calculated manner.

"That's have to be the leader. An A-rank Human Bugs." Calle exclaimed. The leader of Army agreed with the black-haired woman. Find more chapters on My Virtual Library Empire
A single screech was enough to subdue the rampaging monsters. At the same time, they learned more of the new monsters.
"If we kill a B-rank Human Bugs, those underneath it, the peons, will go mad as no one controlling them. However, those above, A-rank Human Bugs could get the raging peons back under control." The leader said, his words recorded by a messenger, ready to be delivered to his superiors, to further their understanding of the monsters.
"In that case, killing the A-rank will get the swarm to break up, making it both easier and harder to destroy the entire swarm."
Easier because without proper cohesion among the swarm, they will be easy target. Harder because the splitting swarm would be harder to catch, plus rampaging monsters always more dangerous as they often did not care for their safety, much less anything else around them.
In the end, killing the A-rank Human Bugs would put Betrum forces in the advantage. Calle and the leader knew this, as they both prepared to move out.
"Let's go monster slaying then."
