Chapter 39: Sign-In Reward! Tong Wenjie’s Crisis?!
In the intricate chessboard of the corporate world, Tong Wenjie knew better than to express her anger openly.
Even if she let her fury show within the company, it would be futile—her superiors turned a blind eye to her grievances.
This bitter sense of helplessness was something she had quickly learned to endure. Thankfully, the extreme events of the original story—such as drugging others with sleeping pills—did not unfold here.
Nonetheless, her daily life had grown exceedingly hectic. Every morning, she had to drop off Fang Yifan and Lin Lei’er at school and pick them up in the afternoon.
On top of that, her company was currently in a critical second round of financing. Employees often worked late into the night, but she was an exception. She would rush out as soon as her workday ended, sometimes even disappearing before official hours were over.
Adding to her troubles was the betrayal of Xiao Jin, her former protégé, forcing her to accept a humiliating demotion.
“Ring ring ring…”
Just as Tong Wenjie was about to resume sorting through her belongings, her phone rang. The caller ID displayed Xiao Jin—her former assistant, now the company’s Deputy Financial Director.
Although she didn’t want to answer, Tong Wenjie knew she had to.
“Director Jin, what’s the matter?” she asked, her tone laden with displeasure despite her efforts to remain polite.
“Wenjie, our company has successfully completed the second round of financing today. We even received a significant investment. Because of this, the boss is hosting a celebratory banquet tonight. The investors have been invited, and the boss has specifically requested your attendance.”
“I’ll send you the address after the call. Be sure to attend on time. If you don’t show up, the boss might not be pleased.”
Without waiting for a reply, Xiao Jin hung up.
“How insufferable.”
After ending the call, Tong Wenjie grumbled.
“What’s wrong?” Fang Yuan asked.
“I just heard that our company’s second round of financing has been completed.”
“Wasn’t your company’s financing only just starting? How could it be over so soon?”
“I’m not sure either. I only heard that a major investor stepped in, which allowed the second round of financing to conclude so quickly.”
Tong Wenjie and Fang Yuan were both astonished by this development. As seasoned professionals, they understood the challenges of corporate fundraising—especially as the company was inching closer to going public.
The sheer scale of the funding involved typically required the participation of multiple major investment institutions. Yet, from Xiao Jin’s words, it seemed this entire round of financing had come from a single investor.
Such a grand gesture was clearly beyond the capacity of an ordinary wealthy individual.
“What are you planning to do tonight?”@@novelbin@@
“I have no choice. Since the boss has personally instructed me to attend, how can I refuse? If I don’t go, I might not even be able to keep my assistant’s position.”
If she were still a carefree twenty-year-old, she might have chosen to quit without hesitation. But now, with the weight of her family responsibilities, including the education expenses of two children in their final year of high school and the rent for their home, Tong Wenjie dared not act rashly.
No matter how aggrieved she felt, she could only endure.
“Forget it, let’s finish packing. I still need to attend the banquet tonight.”
Sighing, Tong Wenjie returned to her tasks. After all, some challenges had to be faced head-on.

“Su Bai, how was my explanation earlier?”
After finishing her lecture, Qiao Yingzi ran over to Su Bai, excitement shining on her face.
For her, this explanation was of great significance, so much so that she had secretly left home to participate.
Thanks to Su Bai’s support, Qiao Yingzi had been able to complete her presentation openly and confidently.
“It was excellent. But we still have something to do—let’s take some photos to show your mum later,” Su Bai said, praising her sincerely.
Their trip had been a cover story about visiting Qingbei University. Since they had already lied, they needed to complete the illusion. Bringing back photos of Qingbei would leave no room for Song Qian to question them.
The lecture at the planetarium was merely a small detour before visiting Qingbei—a chance for Qiao Yingzi to improve her public speaking skills.
Just as they left the planetarium, Su Bai’s phone rang.
He glanced at the unfamiliar number before answering.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Su, this is Raymond from Roland PR. Your investment in our company was a lifesaver. We’re hosting a celebratory banquet tonight and would love for you to attend so everyone can meet our esteemed benefactor.”
[Roland PR (罗兰公关, Luólán Gōngguān): Likely a fictional public relations firm. The name “Roland” carries Western connotations of prestige.]
Hearing this, Su Bai recalled the financing he had signed off on that morning. In the rush to bring Qiao Yingzi to the planetarium, he had completely forgotten.
Recognizing Raymond’s name, Su Bai remembered he was Tong Wenjie’s boss, known for his unscrupulous behavior.
Thinking back to the banquet, Su Bai recalled that it had been the source of significant trouble for Tong Wenjie.
Changing his mind, Su Bai decided he should attend the banquet after all.
“Send me the address. If I’m free, I’ll come by,” he replied casually.
“Of course, Mr. Su. We’ll look forward to seeing you tonight.”
After ending the call, Su Bai smirked.
What do you think?
