Chapter 41: A Hidden Secret
The air was warm and rich with the scent of flowers as the trio made their way toward the edge of the town. Lyra, Ella, and Yuki walked side by side, their boots crunching softly on the dirt road that led into the forest. The town behind them was already fading into the distance, the hustle and bustle of the marketplace replaced by the serene calm of the woods.
It was a quiet moment, the kind that gave Lyra time to think. Her thoughts had been swirling around ever since they had signed up as a party. This was the beginning of something new. Their first mission together. And though she was excited, there was a part of her that felt uneasy. Yuki was a stranger to her, someone she had just met, and there was still the matter of her secret. The secret she had kept hidden for so long.
They had barely started walking when Lyra slowed her pace, glancing over at Yuki. The dark elf was humming a quiet tune, clearly lost in thought, and Ella was walking ahead, her long legs easily keeping pace with the others. But Lyra had something important to say, something that felt like it couldn’t be kept hidden any longer.
"Yuki," Lyra began, her voice soft but firm. "Can you keep a secret?"
Yuki raised an eyebrow, turning her head toward Lyra with a curious expression. "A secret?" she asked, her tone light but with a hint of seriousness in her voice. "Sure, I’m good at keeping secrets. Why do you ask?"
Lyra hesitated for a moment, the words she had been thinking for so long weighing heavily on her chest. She took a deep breath, looking at Yuki. "I’m not... exactly a normal elf," she said slowly, her eyes searching Yuki’s face for any signs of disbelief or rejection.
Yuki’s eyes widened slightly, but she said nothing at first. Instead, she waited for Lyra to continue, her expression unreadable.
"I’m actually a fairy," Lyra finished, her voice barely a whisper. She knew how strange it sounded, even to her own ears. But it was the truth, and it was time Yuki knew. It was the kind of truth that couldn’t be hidden forever.
The words hung in the air for a moment, and then Yuki blinked. For a heartbeat, Lyra thought she might laugh, might scoff, or look at her like she was insane. But instead, Yuki’s face softened, and her lips parted in awe.
"A fairy?" she repeated, her voice filled with wonder. "A real fairy?" She shook her head slowly, as if trying to process the words. "Wow. I’ve never met a fairy before." Her gaze turned curious, then filled with genuine intrigue. "But your wings, they look so beautiful. I’ve heard stories about fairies. But I thought they were just... tales, you know? The little ones that the elders tell."
Lyra felt a sense of relief wash over her as she heard the awe in Yuki’s voice, not disbelief. It was exactly what she had hoped for—a welcoming reaction. But there was still more to explain, and as much as she wanted to tell her everything, she knew it was better to show her. Actions always spoke louder than words, after all.
"Would you like to see them?" Lyra asked, her heart beating a little faster in her chest.
Yuki’s eyes lit up, her expression one of pure excitement. "Of course! I mean, I can hardly believe it’s real, but... I’d love to see your wings."
Lyra nodded, her heart racing with anticipation. She had learned to keep her wings hidden for most of her life, only showing them when absolutely necessary. But this moment felt different. There was something about Yuki’s open curiosity, her genuine kindness, that made Lyra feel safe. It felt right to show her.
As they continued walking, Lyra focused on the magic that concealed her wings. She could feel the familiar hum of power, the energy weaving around her back, suppressing the delicate wings that were part of her very being. But now, in the quiet solitude of the forest’s edge, she let that magic slip away. Slowly, as if a weight had been lifted, her wings began to unfurl.
At first, they were only visible in glimpses, faint glimmers of light that caught the sunlight filtering through the trees. But then, they stretched fully, shimmering and iridescent in the light of the morning. Lyra's wings were delicate, like gossamer strands of silk, shimmering with hues of pale lavender and silver. They were unlike the typical wings of elves or other creatures she had seen—delicate yet powerful, fragile yet resilient. They fluttered softly, catching the light and casting a mesmerizing glow around her.
Yuki’s reaction was instantaneous. She gasped, her eyes wide with wonder and disbelief. "Incredible," she whispered, her voice filled with awe. "I never thought I’d see something so beautiful in my life. They’re... they’re like the wings of a dream."
Lyra felt a warmth spread through her chest at the praise. She had always been self-conscious about her wings, always afraid of what others might think. But now, with Yuki standing there, her gaze full of admiration, it felt as if the secret she had carried for so long had finally found a place to be accepted.
"I’ve heard tales of fairies with wings like yours," Yuki continued, still staring in awe at the delicate wings. "The elders in my clan used to tell stories of a fairy with human-like features, a being who was both human and fairy. I always thought it was just a story for children, though." She shook her head in disbelief. "I never imagined it could be real. And yet, here you are, standing in front of me, proving that those old legends are more than just folklore."
Lyra smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her at Yuki’s words. "I’ve never met another fairy like myself," she said softly. "I don’t know why I was born this way. But I’ve always kept it a secret, not just because of fear, but because... well, because it feels like something different. Something that doesn’t quite fit with the world around me. But I trust you, Yuki."
Yuki took a step closer, her eyes still glued to Lyra’s wings. "You don’t need to hide who you are," she said with a gentle smile. "You’re amazing, Lyra. Don’t ever think you have to be anything other than yourself."
Lyra’s heart swelled with emotion at Yuki’s words. She had never expected to hear something so kind, especially not from someone she had only just met. It made her feel a little less alone, a little more understood. The weight of keeping such a huge secret, one she had carried her entire life, seemed to lift just a little.
Ella, who had been walking ahead of them, turned around at the sound of Yuki’s voice. She paused when she saw Lyra’s wings, her eyes widening slightly. "Lyra... I didn’t know," she said, her voice softer than usual.
Lyra looked at her, a bit of apprehension in her gaze. "I didn’t want to tell anyone," she said quietly. "I wasn’t sure how people would react. But Yuki—she’s different. She accepts me."
Ella smiled, her expression gentle and understanding. "I get it," she said, stepping closer. "You don’t have to hide anymore. We’re a team now, and we’ll protect each other no matter what."
Lyra felt a surge of gratitude toward both Yuki and Ella. For the first time in her life, she felt like she didn’t have to hide, like she could be herself. It was a strange and freeing feeling, and though it still felt new, it was comforting.
"Thank you," Lyra whispered to both of them. "I don’t know what I would do without you."
Yuki smiled brightly, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Well, I guess we’re stuck with each other now," she said with a wink. "But I wouldn’t have it any other way."
With that, the three of them continued their journey into the forest, Lyra’s wings shimmering in the sunlight as they made their way toward the magic boar. Together, they were stronger—united not just by their mission, but by the bond of trust that had been formed between them.
What do you think?
