Chapter 1391 1391: Trap door (1)

This time, no one panicked when they saw the flames since they recognized them.

They knew that these were the flames that Joan had released into the ruin entrance that flowed down into the ruins.

However, there were still a few traces of worry that were on their faces when they saw this.

It was impossible for them to be completely alright with being bathed in flames like this, so it was only natural that they would have traces of hesitation when they saw the flames.

At least none of them dodged out of the way like before.

When I saw the flames, I focused on the flow of these flames.

I opened my eyes wide and carefully watched the flames as they flowed past us. I made sure that I was seeing exactly which corridor the flames were flowing down.

When the flames finally disappeared, I pointed in a certain direction and said, "We're heading in that direction."

There were a few strange looks as expected, but the popes didn't seem confused when they saw me pointing in this direction. I knew why they were acting this way since when the flames disappeared, I had seen that they were looking in the same direction as me.

"You heard the holy son, move in that direction." The two popes immediately gave the order to the holy knights and priests.

Even though they seemed a bit confused, they still followed this order and started clearing the path in that direction.

I gave a nod of praise when I saw them taking the initiative.

There was a reason why they had been able to become the popes of the Holy Council. It wasn't as if they had taken the position of pope by luck, they were smart individuals that had reached their position with their abilities.

Though their faith towards the gods also contributed to that.

But still, they weren't completely empty vases.

With the holy knights and priests clearing the way, we quickly moved forward down this corridor until suddenly we came to a…

"Which way do we go now?" The leader of the holy knights asked as he looked at the three way branching path in front of us.

This was a crossroad with three different paths that were exactly the same, so it wasn't as if we could just make an educated guess on which way to go. At the same time, after we had gotten away from the stairs, there were less and less corridors that were around us.

So even by looking around, we wouldn't be able to find anything.

It didn't seem like there were any clues that would guide us down the right path, but I didn't worry as I looked behind us as if I was waiting for something.

The two popes did the same thing.

Seeing that none of us answered this question, all of the holy knights and priests suddenly turned to look in the same direction as us. But it was clear by the looks on their faces that they didn't understand what was happening.

The only other person that seemed to have a slight understanding was Klein.

He looked like he had an idea, but it wasn't there yet.

After a minute of waiting, the thing that we had been waiting for arrived.

It was another wave of flames.

This wave of flames took longer to reach us compared to before, but it was still going strong. Though if one looked closely, one would be able to see that there were less flames coming towards us.

That didn't matter as I focused on the flow of the flames.

I was looking closely at the flames as they surged forward along with the two popes.

The others could naturally tell that we were looking at the flames, but they didn't seem to figure out what exactly we were looking at.

It didn't take long for the flames to completely surround us once again.

When the flames disappeared, the captain of the holy knights suddenly said, "This way."

I immediately turned to look at the captain of the holy knights when he said this and found that he was actually going down the right path.

There were some that were still confused, but there were also some that were confidently following the captain of the holy knight.

It seemed that they had been able to figure out the flow of the flames as well.

None of the people here were normal people after all.

Those that could become holy knights and priests were considered the elites of the Holy Empire. Especially when they were holy knights and priests that could follow two of the popes of the Holy Council.

So it was no wonder that they were able to figure out the flow of the flames that easily.

Since they knew the trick, there was no need to continue leading them.

Instead, I started focusing on the corridor that we were in.

I was carefully looking at every part of the corridor, trying to figure out if there was something special about this place. Only no matter how I looked at the space around me, it didn't seem like there was anything that was different about this place.

It looked like nothing more than normal ruins.

The stone bricks that were around us seemed to have some wear and tear to them, but there really wasn't anything off about them.

There were several more crossroads that were in front of us, but each time we relied on the flames that came to guide the way. Though as we progressed deeper and deeper into the ruins, it seemed that there were less and less flames that were coming from behind us.

Whether it was because the flames couldn't reach this far or if it was because Joan was slowly running out of stamina, it didn't matter.

For now, there were still enough flames that we were able to continue progressing forward.

That was until all of a sudden…
