Chapter 35 37:The Spectral Collapse
As soon as the light dissipated, Saber fell down on his butt, trembling due to anxiety and the rush of adrenaline.
"Haa! I took a very big gamble."
Shoving aside the perched, dried, swirling body, I tried to get up, breathing heavily. Then, I snapped toward Saber, who twitched like a dead fish.
I could have escaped using shadow steps after a small showdown. After all, the opponent was strong, but I took a risk.
A risk to see where the heart of this guy lies.
Without loyalty, it's worthless to save him.
Thankfully, the gamble paid off; however, I repeated to myself that I shouldn't take such big gambles. But without gambles, I don't think I can prepare early for the future.
Moreover…
It was a thrilling feeling that boosted my ego as my pride screamed, You were right, and you made the right decisions, but its addictiveness might morph me into a broken monster.
Getting up, I kicked Saber. "Hey, get up. We need to escape. Everyone is giving their all to block most of the monsters, and..."
I paused a bit, drawing Saber's attention. "The City Lord might not be strong enough to deal with the monster."
Saber made a dumbfounded expression and looked back at the fight happening across the sky.
"Are you alright?" I asked worriedly, seeing Saber's twitching body.
"Yeah, you are right. It's just... this is the first time I killed someone," Saber spoke with a faint tremble.
"It was a spectre, not a human. Moreover... Ha... I am not good at motivation. Everyone just copes, so you will too." With that, I was about to walk away when I noticed something odd.
"Huh!"
My eyes caught sight of frail black mist emerging from the dead body of a corpse. The mist—or to say, a kind of energy—seemed to be quite tantalizing in the air.
Pondering what to do, I crouched down to examine it, to see if the thing was alive or not. However…
I can't leave issues for later, so it's better to check. Since I have spectral vision, I decided to use it.
The moment my hand touched it—
SWOOSH!
The dark, miasma-like thing swirled around my hands and disappeared.
"Hiss!"
A cold, numbing sensation spread across my body, giving me a chill down the spine.
The Spectral Vision that I had activated on its own bombarded my vision with various shadows of color, and murmurs of various pleas erupted in my eardrums, bursting my senses.
[ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!]
[Save me... Please save me...]
[Help me... Me...]
[Save my son, my son, my son...]
[My wife... My daughter. The monster is killing everything...]
"KURGHHH!" I groaned in pain.
"STOP!"
My mind seemed to burst with countless screams of shrieks and agony echoing loudly in my mind.
I shouted at them to stop.
The noise of grievances was sickening. I felt my eardrums burst out, unable to bear the pain, and blood oozed out, trailing down my cheeks.
Unbeknownst to me, my eyes glowed with a strange light. The world around me started to become blurry and blank. In such a world, I saw countless ghostly apparitions with dark, gruesome eyes looking at me.
The screams hit me like a hammer, each voice filling my head, tearing through me with raw agony.
[Help… please… my son…]
[Save us… we're dying…]
Their words clawed at my mind, as if each one had taken hold and wouldn't let go. My body locked up, every nerve electrified with their pain. Blood began trickling down my cheeks, and I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping somehow that it would end. But the screams only grew louder, digging deeper.
I opened my eyes, and through the blur, I saw them.
Dark forms crawled out from the corpses scattered around, shadowy figures with hollow, haunting eyes. Their faces twisted with grief, and they began to rise, reaching out toward me.
They knew I could see them.
One by one, they moved silently like waves. They glided closer, merging together into a swirling black mist. My breath caught as I felt them sink into me, filling my chest with cold, pressing into my bones. Their sorrow and rage flooded in, a weight so heavy I couldn't move, couldn't breathe.
The shadows kept closing in, whispering, crying,
[He... He... sees us...]
[Saviour... Saviour...]
[He can be our saviour.]
[Since he can see us, he can also free us.]
SWOOSH!
They soon dashed toward me, and I was caught up in a swirling mass of dark ghostly apparitions, swirling around like a vortex storm.
Malevolent, darkish aura swept the place, rushing toward me.
The moment the dark energy touched my skin, it was as if ice had pierced through every vein, slithering deep—deeper than anything had ever gone before.
A chilling burn spread from my fingers up to my wrists, twisting around every muscle, sinking into every nerve. The energy crept slowly, savoring its path, like a freezing poison winding its way inside me.
It reached my chest, and I felt a crushing weight settle there, as if iron claws were tearing through my ribs and wrapping themselves around my heart. The pressure grew, and then came the fire.
A raw and searing pain, like molten metal surging through my veins. It was so intense that every beat of my heart sent new waves of torment spiraling outward, filling me with unbearable heat.
"What the…" I screamed in pain as my veins bulged.
I flipped over, gasping, my nails digging into the ground as the energy continued its cruel path, burning from the inside out. My bones felt as though they were being scraped with blades, my skin stretched thin over fire and ice battling beneath. I could feel every inch of the energy spreading, prying into each nerve, seeping into every cell, fusing with me against my will.
My vision blurred with black spots dancing at the edges, and still, the pain didn't relent.
Instead, it grew, clawing deeper, feeding off my agony. Every breath felt like a struggle.
I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears, racing, desperate for escape, but trapped in this burning, icy hell that was slowly consuming me.
What do you think?
