Chapter 173 173: Grandpa's warm hug.
"Where is that old man?"
In the Tai family's house, grandma Tai was in search of her husband. They were expecting guests and nobody had eaten a morsel since morning because he was too anxious to eat and kept saying that he would eat with his granddaughter.
The granddaughter he was waiting for was ten minutes late and she was afraid that her old husband would collapse from hunger before his beloved granddaughter arrived.
"Grandfather is waiting outside the house on the steps." one of the grandchildren replied.
One of her daughters-in-law mumbled unhappily, "You would think we are preparing for the arrival of a new sister-in-law."
They had all risen early to make sure that the right kind of food was cooked and the house sparkling clean. All this work for a stranger they had never met before.
Grandma Zhang heard the remark but she did not grace it with a response. She left the living room and went outside in search of her husband. Her youngest grandchild followed her.
As soon as she opened the door, she heard him yelling excitedly, "They are here, they have arrived."
She scowled as she watched him attempt to jump as if he was still a young man in his prime. So, she approached him and tapped his arm. "Calm down, you will break your old bones and then you and your precious granddaughter will have to eat this meal from a hospital."
"What are you talking about? My granddaughter thinks I am young. She said so, that I am young enough to pass for her brother." grandpa Tai replied.
Tai Ho Sun was sure that Alix had said no such thing. So, he looked at his father and some of his cousins who had insisted on joining their grandfather outside. All of them laughed because they were witnessing a cute side to their grandfather which they had never seen before.
Tai Change, the oldest cousin said, "I wonder if it's worse seeing in person on in the group chat."
"In person." Tai Fong, Tai Ho Sun's second brother said with certainty. What they were witnessing was abnormal. In his mind, he compared it to seeing dinosaurs in the modern world.
How could an old man leap for joy?
"At my age I am getting a sister and our mother wants us to address her as baby, isn't it ridiculous?" Tai Haoyu, Tai Ho Sun's oldest brother asked the others.
The total of grandsons grandpa Tai Sun had was eight, from three sons. And all eight were now standing outside with eager eyes.
The guests arrived, and most of them saw Alix for the first time ever. It was not her that stole the show for them however. The imposing man in the wheel chair was the one that held their attention.
"Zhang Caishen, in the flesh and blood." Tai Haoyu said in an impressed voice.
Tai Fong whispered, "He looks human."
"Did you think he was an animal?" Tai Dalian asked Tai Fong.
Tai Change chuckled and said, "A vampire perhaps. You have all heard the stories about the man. They say with one look he can get grown men to cry and faint."
"Do we want him as a brother-in-law?" Tai Jiaan who was only thirteen years old asked the others.
Tai Ho Sun could not believe what he was hearing coming out of their mouths. He palmed his face and hoped that they would shut up before he heard them. Especially Tai Jiaan's careless remark.
"Grandpa!!" Alix cried out when they came closer. She used a silly childish tone which grandpa Tai enjoyed hearing from her because he said it made her adorable.
Grandpa Tai pulled her in for a hug. "My granddaughter, my only granddaughter." he cried out as well.
"Grandfather, I missed you." she told him.
Grandpa Tai beamed radiantly. "Of course you did. I am the only one who knows how to have fun with you and treat you well."
Seven out of the eight grandsons looked at Caishen, and then their grandfather and grandmother who was sulking. What kind of claims was the old man making in the presence of Alix's husband? Was he indirectly saying that he didn't treat her well?
Tai Change recalled the conversation which they had all had with their grandfather the previous night concerning Alix. They asked him why he had chosen her as his granddaughter and he said she was as pure as a jewel. That she was not greedy or vain.
She never asked him for anything but simply gave. He marveled because she gave him simple things like an apple, powdered milk or beef jerky.
Another person would be trying to impress him with expensive gifts and showing off in public that they knew him.
"Am I allowed to hug her or not?" grandma Tai asked them. "Also, she brought company, don't just greet her alone." she scolded.
Alix stepped out of the warm hug and smiled at grandma Tai. She had not met her before so she didn't assume random closeness.
"Hello, elder madam." she greeted politely.
Grandma Tai was won over, just like that. If Alix had initiated physical contact and forced a hug or something like that, she would be suspicious. But, she was respectful, polite and distant. She recalled the private conversation in which her husband laid out Alix's entire painful past.
She sighed and held her arms open. "Come here dear. Come and greet your grandmother."
Alix threw herself into the arms of the elderly woman without a second thought. "Grandma," she called, in a soft voice.
Grandma Tai rubbed her hair and said slowly, "Oh, you are so pretty, you smell like flowers and your voice is so soft. Having a granddaughter is the best indeed."
Grandpa Tai suddenly started to worry. He was sure that he was going to have to fight for favor with his wife. Wasn't she the skeptical one about him adopting a granddaughter all this while?
"And just like that, the deal is sealed and we have a sister." Tai Change said irrefutably.
If their grandmother had been conquered, then there was nothing left to discuss.
Caishen and grandpa Tai were exchanging greetings, stiffly with awkward smiles. The grandsons approached one by one, and started introducing themselves, beginning with Change.
"Wait until we get inside, your sister needs to remember your names. And don't overcrowd her, I don't want you to scare her. Especially you Tai Fong, he eyed his second eldest grandson."
Tai Fong was taken aback and he pointed to himself and looked at his brothers. Why was he the one singled out?
"Let's head inside." grandma Tai told them.
"We brought gifts." Alix said.
Grandma Tai gestured at her grandsons to go and fetch everything. "Don't worry about that you have seven adult brothers that can carry them for you."
She put her hands around Alix's shoulders and led her inside, ignoring her husband and Caishen.
"I am not an adult." Tai Jiaan excluded himself from the others.
He smiled and turned to follow them but Tai Fong caught him by the collar of his shirt and dragged him to follow them.
"Just follow us obediently." Tai Change told him.
It was a relief for Alix that so far, things were going well and she hoped they would get better.
What do you think?
